very drole;)
I think my comment stands. I was pissed off because it was akin to finding an article on slashdot entitled "Power button used for turning PCs on/off" or maybe "Stabbing stomach with scissors - uncomfortable". It's so blatantly obvious what that guy did, and it's not even a new technique. shit.;)
This is what passes for a story on slashdot these days? This isn't new. People have been re-creating radio and check boxes using DHTML for YEARS. Shit, I remember first doing it 2 years ago, and I didn't think it was anything special when I did it.
Well, as long as we have many many less gun deaths per capita as the US, I think we're doing something right:)
The cameras are IN PUBLIC, not IN PRIVATE, so there is no loss of public. You can't walk down the street screaming at people to not look at you. That's not what "public" means.:)
I've yet to see one that didn't make me laugh out loud. Seriously. They all have fat Americans running around pretending to be cool, which is just silly.:) Like they're trying to relive something in their childhood on film. I can understand that, but just try and keep it to yourself. Until fans get the idea that little things called "production value" and "the ability to write dialog" are necessary for any scripted fan creation, we're just going to see more and more of these horrible videos. oof.
Are you missing something here? You're complaining that people who use office to write documents need to have office to convert them to the new format? Are you worried that office will automatically uninstall itself from everyone's computer at the same time, rendering all these files useless? That's clearly not going to happen.:)
Anyway, who says office documents need to be cross-compatible? That's only a benefit for those not running office, and that's a tiny minority. I've been using office since windows 3.1, and I've never found any documents of mine to be unopenable.
So the user chooses to protect their documents in a way that precludes others from opening it... how is that a problem? It's a choice. No-one is putting a gun to anyone's head on this one.
You're acting as if on any given date Office is going to suddenly cease working, and everyone's documents will be instantly shredded, across the globe. That's clearly not going to happen. People who write office documents have a copy of office. That means they'll always be able to export their "locked" files to whatever format they want.
I'm not trying to be difficult - I honestly can't see a problem here:)
You lost me on that one:) So, according to you, Windows servers take up more disk space than other OSs? Interesting. Also, we weren't discussing selling software, but practicalities and possibilities. It's almost as if the goalposts are moving before my very eyes...;)
If you want to make something in flash for free, just download the trial. 30 days of full operation. That's plenty long enough for most flash animations:) and you can re-install for another 30 days.
Or, as you say, use ming. It's more than good enough for most flash work.
if by "lots" you mean the few people out there who need to use flash on their unix boxes - it's not a great deal. I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, but clearly, the number of people using non-x86 hardware who would get upset about something as trivial as flash is clearly minimal.
All MS documents are unlocked. Just because the file format isn't open doesn't mean you can't get the data in and out. Your post sounded like FUD to me;)
The DRM is for the author to use to protect their files. It's not something microsoft adds to every document to ensure it only opens with a microsoft app.
on a windows server you can use com objects to open a doc file very quickly. I do it in PHP every once in a while.
Locked-in file formats don't even figure in most peoples' thinking. They just want software they're familiar with. Most people don't have software ideology.
My pc hibernates when I press the power button. No programs even know they're going into suspension, so there are no messages. 10 seconds, and the machine powers down, saving the state. a quick power up and I'm back to where I was.
My start button is a little icon, not the word "start":-P
Anyway, I think having "Log off" and "Turn off computer" on the start button makes more sense than having to drop to a console to install a freakin' printer;) hehehehe
Any "power user" that forces an operating system onto users who haven't used it isn't doing his job. Computers aren't used at companies for ideological reasons - they're tools. If a company has a choice between getting a tool everyone knows how to use, or a new tool that while possibly better, requires every user to be trained in its use, it's quite obvious which one they'll choose.
I wish people would stop turning every windows vs. linux choice as some sort of defining moment in the history of the world.
But if the attackers are in fact responding to some act perpetrated by the US, does that make them "anti-American" or simply "pro-themselves"? I think the term "anti-American" is used as it paints those they apply it to as foaming-at-the-mouth crazies, who would rather eat an Americna baby than listen to reason. If you catch my drift.
Most countries simply refer to people attacking them as "the enemy" or more recently "terrorists" - they don't need to add even more emotive language into the mix.:)
My whole point is, if you use a "safer" alternative, you miss out. It comes down to one point - does your want for security outweigh your want of a usable operating system? Most people out there don't care about security. They don't understand, so they don't care. They just want to use their computer, like they just want to use their TVs and microwaves. That's why most people are fine with windows - it won't stop you from doing anything stupid. If you know what you're doing, it's fine. I guess if you don't, it's trouble:)
My windows boxes are behind a hardware firewall, so I have no problem. My av is auto-updating, and never detects anything (I don't run anything weird on my pc, and the dodgy sites I visit are dodgy for other reasons). I find this "windows will kill your children" message somewhat FUD. I accept it might not be the same for everyone else, but my windows pc is trouble-free, and I'm hardly trying. Am I missing something?:)
it's actually over $222 (US) a year, but worth every penny.
TV licensing collects the money, which is not part of the BBC either :)

Do editors not read articles any more? shit.

You can stop the terrorists, but it seems no-one wants to do that. But that's another story.

it's almost as if you're biassed... ;)

ghostscript, dude :)

It's a big problem with most open source projects - they don't have graphic designers or branding experts, just coders. Draw your own conclusions ;)

More FUD. Windows can be used very securely. Saying to not use it flat-out reeks of zealotry :) I'm just saying...
