Alot of crap people actually want. I had 10 of the big ole heavy computer monitors, the kind that break your back when you try to move them, of various sizes. Some worked, some didn't, and frankly I would have paid someone to take them away. I've moved on to flat panels and will never buy another 50lb monitor (or tv for that matter) again.
Anyway, someone said put them on craigslist, so i did (with an "all or nothing" condition) and they were gone the next morning and I had $200 in my pocket, they even hauled the bastards out of the basement themselves. I guess in this case my trash really was someone else's treasure.
Then I did the same thing with 4 broken tv's that have been accumulating, got $70 for those. I would have had to pay more than that to have those disposed of.
I think Apple shot themselves in the foot with the AT&T lock in. I used to be pretty much indifferent to Apple products, maybe leaning towards positive. I use iTunes and have an iPod, but after this fiasco I definitely have a negative impression of Apple products, I won't be buying an iPhone, and i'll think twice about buying anything else from them. Great marketing.
So has this whole iPhone debacle damaged Apple's reputation?
I have iPods and use iTunes and enjoy them immensely, when the iPhone came out it was definitely on my list of gadgets to get. My opinion of Apple used to be neutral leaning positive.
Now that's changed as i'm getting new insight into their philosophy. The AT&T lock in took the iPhone off my wish list pretty quickly, and the rest of these stories we see here several times a week have certainly turned me off of Apple. Yeah the fanatics will probably always be fanatics, but their casual customer base has been exploding since the iPod took off, and now it seems the casual customer base is being exploited (as well as the fanatics, they just won't admit it).
I don't know what they're trying to accomplish, but it seems to be backfiring.
*clap* i'm really happy for you.
If you haven't watched tv in years, how do you know all tv programming is shit nowadays? (as opposed to 10 years ago when it was all great, or what?)
I'd like to see someone compile a list of patents the Segway infringes on (they're out there), buy them up, and sue the ass off that guy. Wonder if he'd change his tune then?
Sometimes I wonder, why use computers for gaming at all? With a game console, you get:
- proper game controllers, rather than a clumsy typing device.
- software optimized to a specific hardware, rather than having to configure anything.
- the use of a TV, which is usually bigger than a computer monitor at a lower cost.
I guess it depends on what type of games you play. FPS's really suck with a controller, mouselook is essential and it's clunky and frustrating trying to aim with an analog. Or how about MMORPG's? I cringe at the thought of playing WoW with only 6-8 buttons.
Perhaps they'd have had to spend less on that new stadium or less on that new art gallery. So what? Can we maybe all agree that fixing the roads ought to be higher on the priority list than doling out money for a privately owned stadium?
The new stadium is being paid for by a hennepin county sales tax specifically passed to build a stadium. That money wouldn't and couldn't be used to fix bridges. The county doesn't fix bridges, the state does (or the feds in the case of interstate freeways like 35w (i think)).
"More than 70,000 bridges across the country are rated structurally deficient like the span that collapsed in Minneapolis"
and how many of those bridges are in New York? Or DC? Wisconsin? California? Pennsylvania? Missouri? All of these states are building or have recently built a new stadium.
This isn't a stadium issue, and it's not a Minnesota issue. Actually Minnesota has the 4th smallest percentage of those 70,000 bridges rated structurally deficient. Saying "how can you build a stadium while your bridges need fixing" is like saying the police have no business writing traffic tickets while there are still murderers unsolved. The can both happen, if they want to pass a bill to fix bridges they are certainly welcome to.
Admittedly I haven't tried the iphone yet, I may try one out but i'm not excited about the complete lack of buttons. Currently with my treo i can type out a phone number by feel while driving, or type out a text with the phone in my pocket. Also the buttons give you a confirmation that you gave input, as you can feel the button go down. Without being able to feel a keyboard it seems like typing could be a pain.
Because it's the RIAA, and most people here foam at the mouth and lose all sense of logic whenever they see those letters. Some will bitch that they used the police and didn't fund their own investigation, some will bitch that they didn't use the police and paid their own investigators, and most will bitch about both.
So it's wrong for the police to bust people who are counterfeiting AND selling CD's for a profit? That's not exactly filesharing. So should counterfeiting anything be legal? Or does this only apply to the RIAA?
yeah so use your desktop then. we're talking about a personalized homepage here, not what i'd call critical or valuable data. if you or anyone else want to find/buy/build a desktop app that can backup your personalized homepage who is stopping you?

Customers want to be locked in to a specific carrier? That's news to me.
because slashdot usernames aren't anonymous?
the title was taken from TFA

The whole AT&T lock in has got to be one of the biggest blunders in Apple history. I can't see how it has done anything but damage Apple's reputation.

all I know is i don't want to have to buy/maintain 6+ cable boxes. I've got a 7" tv in my kitchen, what am I supposed to put a box on top of it?

That's a pretty stupid statement. If someone uses your car in a bank robbery, are you going to take responsibility?
Judging by the way SCO's stock skyrocketed, i'd say a lot of people believed them.

so you're saying there's no sex on the internet...
Ok well you go on eating your Big Mac and tuning the radio while driving, and i'll dial my phone without taking my eyes off the road.

why do you come here again?
Im probably counted as 1 of those 13 million, even though i uninstalled steam 2+ years ago.
Exactly, it'd be a minor inconvenience at most. Now when Firefox deleted 4 years worth of bookmarks - that was a bitch.
