    While they may (or may not have) been the first, they didn't start anything. If they had never been born, SPAM would still exist in the state it does now. They didn't birth anything, they just used a rather obvious idea of trying to sell shit on the net.

    not to mention, posting blatant spam on a message board, and even just dropping a url within normal conversation on some of the more anal ones, will get the post removed in no time in most forums that have any sort of traffic.

    ok but that's really besides the point, nobody AT Google is planning on reading your mail, it's made to sound as if some dateless schmoe at Google is slurping a Mountain Dew and giggling as he reads through your emails. This isn't trampling on anybodys rights.

    A) you don't have to use the service
    B) if youre forced to see ads anyway why wouldn't you want to see products or services that actually interest you?

    Anytime you get something for free there's a tradeoff.

    Care to back this up with a link or something? The system is reading your mail to index it, i havn't seen anything regarding targeting ads, and even if they did target ads that way, who cares? You privacy freaks somehow equate this with losing your freedom or some shit.

    When it comes to viruses, whoever is using the OS that is in the majority will be part of the problem. The reason that virus writers write for Windows is that most people are using windows. If most people were using Macs then there would be a lot of viruses written for Macs.

    Insightful? How about redundant? This exact same thing is regurgitated in every single discussion with a mere mention of a virus.

    Well then you have never seriously worked with Photoshop. Really the GIMP is a remarkable piece of software, but saying it's a replacement for Photoshop is like saying Windows 3.1 is actually a great replacement for Mac OS X.

    I gave up photoshop 3 years ago for macromedia fireworks, and i've never looked back. i'll take macromedia products on linux over adobe products anyday.

I mean, come on, drop the caller id and 3-way you can get your very own telephone line for $20/month.
