But its not for everyone. I guess this is a generation thing (lol). Most people from the pre-redhat/windows days continue to admire the simplicity and elegance of slackware. I just dont see a new linux adopter choosing the "plain and dry" slackware over anything else. Maybe in 10 years, people wont even open consoles anymore. But I for one cant live without a shell prompt the rest of my life....
Just count the number of *dumb* "slackware is dead" posts!
So it seems that Slackware is just as vulnerable as anyone else.
No it isnt. I havent been able to crash my system, or affect it in anyway whatsoever by going multiple times to the "dreaded page". I am using Slack 8.0, with mozilla 1.0. I really think slackware users are immune to this bug for whatever reasons...
Just something I forgot to mention in the previous msg... I dont have anything against such a feature as long as there is a way to disable it, and get the current behaviour. There are no religion issues here;). Its just that I prefer it this way.
In what ways does this feature cause you problems or usability issues?
Well, very simple. I like to start with a blank page wheneve I open a new window/tab. Not the home page. Not the previous page. With IE, I always found myself pressing ESC to stop loading the current page in the newly spawned window. I found this really irritating.
What I dont understand is why you would like to have another copy of the current page! If you are opening a new page/tab, it should be a new page/tab. I fail to understand how having two copies of the same page helps in any way. And if you want to follow a link, and still be on a page, use the centre click button, with background loading and tabs!
GigsVT posted in another reply that Opera has done this since 1998. Do you refuse to use that? I don't hear anybody complaining about the feature there.
Never tried opera. But if it has this functionality, and it cant be disabled, i dont think i would like it very much...
If you find that you use IE's window cloning (perhaps without even realising that you've started using) and really miss it under Mozilla, please vote
NOOOOOO
I will stop using mozilla if this is forced on me. I never even tried using IE because of this very irritating 'feature'. I always thought of it as a bug!
What if... (hypothetically), the company does not make any modifications to the code after releasing it? Or makes trivial changes in the obfuscated code only? What then?
Dont get me wrong. I religiously come to Slashdot every day, and find it perhaps the best site on the internet. But if they start charging money, they need to get more professional. They need to be more answerable to people, and "I will select the stories that I find good" might not work quite as well!
Well, it is possible... There are two ways of going about it :
1) The Compaq handhelds.org team is working on getting the CF/PC sleeve supported in the bootloader. In fact, if you see the changelog of the bootloaders, you will see that they have already started putting in code for this purpose. Once this gets done, you should be able to load linux on the CF card, and leave wince on the internal flash. I dont know though how much longer this would take.
2) The second option is to use Redboot, and use the technique described here. However, these instructions are rather old, and would require some ammount of effort to get them to work.
I FULLY agree with the post. I would like to go one step ahead. I think we need more rational topics, and many many more topics. There could easily have been a LOTR topic, as was requested by many people.
There is no need for topics on "Be", "Comdex", "Digital", "TurboLinux", "Upgrades", "Beanies", etc..
What is needed is a rethinking on how to categorize the news to make it more informative and useful.
I would like that there be some 100-200, or even more topics, and the user can either ignore certain topics, or select the topics that he is interested in. This way the frontpage can get really configurable.
Also, the sections "apache", "bsd", "developers", etc are redundant! There shoud only be topics, and people who are interested in new apache releases can select that topic for their page. I really do not understand the reason behind the "sections", when everything can be handled usint "topics" alone.
err...
The Zaurus isnt quite open source. They dont give the hardware design etc. Simputer can be called a trylly open source handheld.
Hardware apart, even parts of the Zaurus software environment are closed. Parts of Qtopia are closed, and licensed from Trolltech. Also, the opera web browser etc are closed.
In fact, there is a project, Open Zaurus is an initiative towards a tryly open software Zaurus environment.
yay! me too!!!

Its Computer generated!
... 30 years too late for this?
but not in dreams, never in our dreams.
You havent read 1984 by George Orwell, have you?
Yea, kind of reminds me of the "Thought Police" from 1984...
But that was a satire on extreme communism, wasnt it?
And when that is done, they will ban people not looking at the TV when the ads are playing, or not paying attention to ads.
And next, they will make it compulsory for people to 'respond' to ads by buying whatever they are trying to sell...
Thank God I dont have a tv!
Oh wait... they can do this with magazines and the internet as well!!!
It is a phrase. You are supposed to enclose it in double quotes. This is what you will get. A count of 7,580.
Now where am I supposed to send in the royalty for trying out this technique? And what are the rates, please?
Precisely what I have been wondering...
I wish I had mod points to mod you up... That made my day :)
Beowulf cluster of these!!
;-)
err... sorry. Someone had to do it.
Also, did you know? It runs Linux
Time to increase my karma...

I agree with you completely. Slashdot needs to improve its service if they expect people to give them money. All those who moderated up the havent had moderation or metamoderation rights ever since. This requires an explaination. This is not the only thing. Rejection of stories etc. needs to be explained.

I wish i had the first post on this story! This one will be remembered for a long time
:)
Congratulations to you both!
WOO HOO... No one can mod me down this time
I wholeheartedly second that!
Quicktime movies not working under linux is the lnly reason I still have a version of windows lying around.

okay...
I knew that HHGTTG was on BBC... Didnt know it was on Radio 4. Thanks for that tip.
btw, is it only me, or does Radio 1 really suck?
I have never heard BBC radio, so forgive my ignorance.
What are Radio 1, and Radio 4? What is the difference? What about Radio 2, 3, 5... ?
does this mean, no linux support under the new company? this sucks!
