A! forgot something. CSS allows you to separate the content from the presentation. Easier to read as page structure...

  2. Re:Did anyone really stop using gifs? on GIF Support Returns to GD · · Score: 1

No you're not. A page designed with CSS is a lot more compatible with a hardware like a cellphone or a pda, because CSS can downgrade very well. Specifying alternate style sheets, you can have the page rendered acording to the preferences of the browser. Check out Opera to see some cool use of user style sheets.

About the size: let's say you have a 10 kb independent HTML file, with table layout, and I have a 5 kb HTML file and 10 kb CSS file. Guess who's gonna win in size at the third page loaded on the website? The css file will get cached by the user agent.

Also, a CSS website is a lot more accesible to people with disabilities (you insensitive clod!). The webpage and screen readers will have a clear path across the page, the menus will become clear and you may even insert some specific options for the audio rendering with CSS.

I bet those are really easy to stop with custom stylesheets. Mozilla and Opera have this, they just need to be configured. Of course, some sites might make valid use of something like this (cause they're cool), so in the end something like privoxy, which has a custom blocking list compiled by users might help.

Why nobody even mentions privoxy? It's a filtering proxy that eliminates 99% of ads and banners, with almost no effort involved in configuring. Privoxy runs on Linux and Windows and together with Proxy+ (free for 2 users) or squid can make a sweet setup for a local network... Those are the first things I install on any network I configure...

BTW, check Epoz or Kutu, those are some crossbrowser visual widgets (they even work in konqueror) :)

what about, for example, leaving some "white" space, as all designers and usability experts know that it improves reading... What about clearly dividing, inside the two main areas, the little areas, like: Reports, Books, etc... as every usability expert knows that dividing content into areas, well spaced-out, makes them easier to spot. Right now, you really have to concentrate on the page to find those. What about listening to his own advice and clearly state what the website is about, also leaving the marketing bullshit out, cause right now is: "useit.com: usable information technology", which can mean a lot and anything. What about providing with a zoom-out and zoom-in (alternate style sheets), cause on my 21", 1024x768, that text is big... Clearly, he is not a usability expert that practices what he preaches

As for solving your problems... edit /etc/inittab, and you'll see that the default runlevel is 3... change it to 4. Then maybe you should install KDE, or maybe you just have some really weird expectation from a "desktop operating system". Because from any point I look at the problem, for me at least, the Linux desktop shell (KDE in this case, 'cause I'm a fan) beats Windows XP. Konqueror is like windows explorer on steroids, you have lots of themes, you have a multiple level clipboard, better text editor, better multimedia player (with Kmplayer), etc. So, if all you want is to surf the net, watch movies, work word & powepoint, I think Linux (KDE & OpenOffice.org) is there. If you need games or application that have no counterpart on Linux... then XP is for you. But then it's not Windows XP that is better, it's just lucky that it runs you specific application.
