Like much of bash.org that's actually a Bill Hicks quote.

As for the article... The warning "Do not iron" on the lottery ticket is pretty funny as my mother did just that to a winning ticket a couple of weeks ago. My brother won some money and she said she'd cash it in for him - he handed her a crumpled up sliver of a ticket. She thought "They'll never take this!" and slapped it on the ironing board... ...well, these things are printed on thermal paper (as many of you may know) so you can guess what happened next.

Not perfectly. That's where the "Fuzzy" part comes in. It uses the String::Approx Perl module to attempt to derive sensible output and match it against a list of spammy words (which you can add to yourself). I find it works quite well even with noisy images but I did tweak the settings a little on my own installation.

There are a couple of downsides... one is the overhead - it can take a few seconds to process each mail which contains an image. You also need to patch gocr and giftext as there are some segfault problems.

I think it's worth it - the amount of spam that gets through on our installation is negligible and I have bayes learning scripts run nightly on the stuff that isn't filtered. Don't really have to think about it much any more :)

The "assaulting an officer" charges were later dropped.

I have video of police here (Ireland) beating the shit out of people at a peaceful protest as well as verbally abusing anyone who even looked at them. Probably the worst clip is the one with 4 or 5 of them in a doorway pounding their trunchoens into the corner. When they disperse one girl appears with blood pouring down her face. I'm sure I missed the earlier clip where she took them all on...

I don't know how it is in LA but here the police are a bunch of angry people who've never lived in a city, they have their heads pumped with all sorts of BS about the nature of society and then are turned loose on the streets waiting for that junkie to inject a needle full of cotton into their jugular or whatever it is they're so on edge about. I don't go to town at night any more - it's not because of the gangs of drunken thugs looking for a fight, it's because of the gangs of legally sanctioned thugs looking for lives to screw with.

They will just beat you for no reason... You have the wrong haircut today or you're the wrong type of non-caucasian or you're on your own and don't look all that wealthy... Reason enough for them.

Just because working in the medium is often as soulless as any other assembly line doesn't mean there can't be some level of artistic appreciation for the work of those who are truly committed. Sure, most of what's churned out is what works for cash but there are always those who'll go that extra mile to impress and delight. It might not make the big bucks for the creator but great artists are never appreciated in their own time ;)

This recent example still has people scratching their heads. "^ this isn't" indeed...

    Personally, I haven't upgraded...

I did... But then I went right back. One of the ways I use a browser is to select text in a xterm or other app and middle click on a new Firefox tab. The keyword.URL key is set to search rather than return the first result so I get a page of search results on that text - most useful. In FF2 this doesn't work - a middle click on the browser window != typing something into the URL bar now. No problem, but I don't know what it == so I could set that. I did try Seamonkey but that had bigger problems - thing is, this is a habit I picked up using the old Mozilla suite.

They also moved the tab close button. The browser is one of the few apps where I make use of the mouse so I like it to be as efficient as possible to do stuff. Being able to close a bunch of windows by repeatedly clicking the same button was very handy - I would press ^W repeatedly but if the page focus isn't just right then the window won't close... While I'm on the topic, did the order the tabs are focussed when the current tab is closed change? ISTR being irritated by something like that.

A few of my extensions stopped working but that's excusable - they've probably been fixed by now. I'm just not on FF2 any more.

I hope the Moz team hasn't become obsessed with market share... that's what promotion and campaigns, not release dates, are for.

I believe it makes them wrong but then I live here. Things have improved of late. I've noticed around the college I'm studying at now that safe sex is promoted heavily - even more than last year. I think there's been a realisation that promoting safe sex isn't promoting casual sex. As for the .ie domain? Who cares? They priced themselves out of the market a long time ago - only larger businesses can afford them anyway. The current management of the .ie domain seems to run contrary to the overriding trend of making communications infrastructure more accessible - it took serious government pressure to make affordable broadband available in even the most densely populated areas. It was laughable when Ireland was dubbed by the government as the "e-hub of Europe" when most of the population who wanted to connect to the outside world were paying per minute for flakey dialup.

I'd consider that "official endorsment" from the original creators of these games. It's not like the situation with Nintendo, who have spoken out against emulation as bad and evil and wrong and causes cancer - I assume this is the attitude which gave rise to Paypal's policy. ScummVM is a useful project with industry acceptance and the backing of the companies whose software it enables. It might behoove the original authors of the games to petition Paypal about their policy in this case - I've bought several LucasArts games to play on ScummVM and I reckon others have done the same.
