I do agree. Valve is on the right track (some consider it invasive, but it made it a bitch to crack properly for a while, and it wasn't a rootkit or anything). Although the US internet system isn't really ready for online content delivery to become the norm (at least with the traditional internet setup) quite yet.
Software piracy has got to be the most overlooked form if piracy. thepiratebay has 1.8 million downloads of Quake 4 clocked (not sure if they are complete, but that's 1.8 million potential sales), and I think I remember Doom 3 having like 30,000 seeds at it's peak. It dissapoints me as a potential software developer since the developers often get shafted from what I've seen (I recall reading the Publisher gets almost as much if not more money then the developer in many cases from sales). As much as I hate the RIAA's scare tactics, a little bit of them is a necessary evil to prevent people from pirating (not suing as many people as possible like the RIAA does). Without any risk, people have absolutely no reason to stop....
Whoops, my bad. I don't smoke, so I wasn't really sure. I must have just gotten used to just seeing people smoke when they were 16 in HS because it was "cool" or to rebel. But either way, it seems to be one of the least-controlled "coming of age" rights, and ironically one of the biggest cash cows.
The US is fucked up in many ways (I live in the US, and am not a typical "anti-American American"). One of the biggest problems is we have managed to turn things like pr0n and drinking into a sort of a enormous taboo for younger people (Is a typical 18 year old casual drinker really any more mature about drinking then a 21 year old casual drinker?), and have just encouraged them and attached a stigma to the "bad" that are a known part of life. I remember reading once that Japanese baths used to be co-ed many years ago before the white man (Might have been America, might have been Europe, I don't know) attached a stigma to such things. A not-so-bad thing that then had a stigma attached to it. I do agree with you. Many of the things "to protect minors" are just making them another way to rebel against "the system". You can smoke at 16 (which is probably one of the most addictive activities around), but can't watch porn? Yeah, I see a situation where the market is controlling the people (see my sig).
Well when a good amount of kids will find a way into a movie no matter what, not allowing NC-17 movies is a good way to cover your ass. In this country, I wouldn't be surprised if a parent was able to sue a theater for letting them allow their 11 year old kid watch a "porn" (Be it real porn, or just a few seconds of NC-17 footage).... Business is all about covering your ass, and going after those who have a bare ass for some people....
Ah, I see now. The link in the article was to the bank, not the entire Mizuho financial group. The link to the Mizuho Financial Group tells their total assets. I guess the article should have considered the financial institution as a whole, and not just the bank to make the 2nd largest claim. I am now done covering my ass.
Last I checked, 1 yen was approximately equal to 1 cent (yes, it can fluctuate, but your never going to have 1 yen equalling one dollar unless the US becomes a third world country). Mizuho's site says they have 650 billion yen of capital, which is about $6.5 billion US Dollars very roughly, or $5.4 billion USD to be exact... According to this list, The top bank in just the US (Citigroup) has over $1 trillion in assets, 2nd has $771 billion (JPMorgan Chase), and 20th largest (Regions Financial) has $48.6 billion. That is much more then Mizuho by far. I have no clue as to how accurate that site is, but a small bank located around where I live has $2 billion in assets, so I know national (and global) banks most be worth much more.
My parents just got an HDTV, and with no plans to upgrade their cable service, the only thing other then typical analog cable signals (ack, not even digital cable!!!!) that they use are DVDs (which are of course a fraction of the resolution HDTV can do), and that's just because a DVD player is built into it. It's a cruel thing for a broke, gadget-loving college student to see....
That he read in the paper about some guy accidently having his elbow or something on the enter key on a number pad on a keyboard, and buying a few million dollars worth of shares of something due to that.
The next time I golf, and I see my ball heading towards a large crowd of people, I shouldn't alert them about it since it will probably only hit one person (assuming no rebound)?
I got a "greeting card" from someone over AIM that I talked to about getting an apartment with for maybe half an hour total, and it was a com file.......... Yeah, that's not a virus.....
People have been using cameras to sneak around for dozens of years.... Be it as a data storage medium, or going through someone's secret files and taking pictures of them (ala TV spies), it'll always be a threat....
I fail to see how this is that new. I remember seeing a PT cruiser outside of my HS when i was maybe a sophmore and was wondering if I was going crazy since it looked like it had two colors (due to sunlight hitting parts of it). and I'm now a junior in college. So yeah, this has been around for a while...
I read about electric current being passed through fabric, and was hoping they finally made an invisablity fabric..... (I think I watched too much Batman as a child)...... Still cool though........
2ch (2 channel) is a Japanese forum (more similar to slashdot then typical forums) that has over 10 million members from all different walks of life (not mainly teenagers like myspace). There is a US variant (an imitation not related directly or anywhere near as popular) 4ch that gives a good idea of the format. It's an interesting concept due to it's broadness in topics and people who use it. Although myspace seems to be pretty popular with people who aren't computer experts.
Yes, you can pay for better flight plans (including less transfers which may take less time), and other stuff. But that's the consumer. He's proposing the producer to be able to pay for something better? How is this good for the consumer?
It'll just keep linux as a hobby OS or server OS (where it should be, but that's due to people not using it due to bad drivers, which is due to it not being a desktop and worth the time for development, and the cycle repeats), and maintain Microsoft's monopoly over x86 architectures (assuming OS X piracy on commodity hardware doesn't go crazy). Same old same old. and there will always be ways around it (and I doubt the RIAA is going to start suing people for installing software to just play DVDs in linux with such a small user base).
I would think many slashdot readers love automated systems due to one less situation in which social interaction is needed.... I don't mind them. I just hate answering machines, where I have to say something and make sure I don't slip up and miss a needed detail, make an ass of myself, etc, with no easy way to recover without feeling like an ass....
Experience could be harder to find then one might think. I'm going to start looking for my first co-op (out of 4 quarters of it) soon. And I'm expecting to to through hell trying to get that first job with my average grades....
I've been known to typically buy maybe 3 or 4 games at retail price, and maybe a few more at markdown when they are cheap and stores are just trying to get rid of old games...... That's how I did it with the n64 and PS2. Can't say I've even bought a game yet for my set-top XBox....
Ditto to that. I got the AIW 7500 (Was only $200 I think so nowhere near as insane as this one). "It seemed like a good idea at the time"......... I regretted it after a while. AIW's are traditionally pretty crippled for games even in comparison to there numerical equivilants that aren't AiW (As is seen in a review of the newest one that I have seen, probably the one in the article). It was really a pain in the ass when I realized it wasn't cutting it, and had to get another TV tuner in addition to a new Vid card.... "I don't have enough slots" gives some people reason to go with an AiW, but you could get a decent new mobo in most cases for $100 with plenty more slots if that's a problem, and that would probably be more cost effectve in the long run.... And what if you've got all 5 slots filled? I don't know how your filling all those, but a good mobo would probalby take the place of a lot of cards additional functions....

How many of these jobs that will be created in India will be lost in America?

True. But companies are never upfront about "the customer is always second", which would be done in this situation.
