  19. A Google Browser makes sense on Will Google Launch A Browser? · · Score: 4, Interesting

It really does. It seems logical that since most people just assume Google is the only search engine anyway, that a Google Browser would seem to be a logical step in the company's progression.

HOWEVER, I am a little worried that at some point, people want so much to fight one monster that they create another to combat it.

Google search, GMAIL, the big IPO, GBrowser........GOffice for your web based DOC sharing, etc, etc, etc.

I like Google Search and I like GMAIL, but at the same time, whenever I see a company heading down the road to tell me that I should use them for my "complete online computing experience", I do feel a little uncomfortable.

I am not saying that is the case, and I am not saying any of this is bad. I like what Google is doing right now because new innovation is a good thing. But at the same time, I am aware of another company that wants everything I use to have their name attached to it and I am always keeping both eyes open.

My question is this? With the raging debate that goes on about Linux on the desktop, do you think the PC's in this building will be running Gnome or KDE as the default.

I am assuming they will be running Fedora, but I guess Suse is a possibility. But then maybe Bill won't allow them to run Suse since they are run by Novell, who is trying to rip off .net with Mono. They may try Debian, but they might be waiting on Sarge to be released before making a commitment.

  21. Re:why do you use gnome? on GNOME 2.8 Released · · Score: 1

I personally switched because I found that most of the apps I liked were GTK based apps. But I had always gone against GNOME because I liked KDE better just because it is more configurable.

But I always thought that all of those GTK apps looked like crap and did not integrate as well as I wanted them too.

So I switched to GNOME and really like it now. Everything is more easily integrated and looks better for things like PAN, GAIM, Evolution, the new RealPlayer, etc.

If it were just the desktop, I like KDE better. But I prefer the Gnome apps.

    That is my take.

  22. The Infamous "Lightweight" argument on GNOME 2.8 Released · · Score: 4, Insightful

Let me begin by saying that I switch back and forth between Enlightenment and Gnome/KDE, so I am familiar with both sides of the argument. For the record, this takes place on a PIII 800 laptop with 256MB of RAM so I am in the middle of the curve. But I never have performance complaints with any of these. They all run better than Windows.

    That being said.......

I see the point of wanting something lightweight on underpowered hardware. That is where the the Openbox's and XFCE's of the world come in. But what about those who have a big machine. If it can handle it, why not have something that can take advantage of it. It would seem to me that there should be a niche for that. Hardware specs will keeping increasing, not decreasing. So therefore, why wouldn't a GNOME or KDE take advantage of that.

I see more variance from distro to distro than I do from window manager to window manager. For instance, Gnome on Fedora to me is much slower than Gnome on Gentoo or Debian. But that is just me.

You can drive a Hyundai because it gets you where you want to go and gets great gas mileage, but that Corvette sure is good looking and fun to drive. And quite fast I might add.

  24. Re:Evolution does not belong !! on Gnome 2.8 RC1 Released · · Score: 1

I wholeheartedly agree, and I would take it one step futher. Applications should be added by the user.

For example, I use Firefox. So let's say I want to use Gnome. In both Gentoo and Debian, you have to download Mozilla (including Mozilla Mail and News)if you want to use Gnome. I don't want Mozilla, I want Firefox. Let's say I don't want Evolution, and I want MUTT, or in my case, I just skip email clients altogether and go web based.

Well it will pull Evolution anyway.

I just wish you could get GNOME, and then add on what you want afterwards. KDE is a little different because it is Keverything, but still I wish the same there.

Let me decide what email client I want, what medial player I want, what IM client I want, etc.

I know I can go the way of Enlightenment, Openbox, etc and on occasion I do. But it sure it nice to not have to edit config files to change my wallpaper or menus. I prefer configuring a GUI through the GUI. Seems to make more sense

  25. But, But, But. on Gnome 2.8 RC1 Released · · Score: 0, Flamebait

I have not read all the posts yet, but since this is a GNOME article go ahead and queue up the people who say KDE is better.

And queue up the minimalistic zealots who wonder why everyone runs KDE and GNOME when they run FVWM/Openbox/WindowMaker, etc because it just does what they want it to and nothing more. And my favorite, "it is so lightweight" "It puts no strain on my Dual Athlon, 1GB RAM system."

And queue me up as saying why the hell do those people feel they need to post in a GNOME forum if they don't like it.

It's called choice people, as in "freedom of".
