You can keep a cheap corded phone around anyways, assuming you didn't rip the wires out of your walls. Any phone plugged into the line can call 911, whether you pay for a plan or no. Same with any cellphone.
The same thing that happens when your power goes out and the only phone in your house is cordless: you lose 911 service unless you have a charged cellphone handy.
The problem is that the closed source proprietary drivers put forth by ATi and (to a lesser extent) nVidia SUCK. They're horrible, both the drivers and the install tools for them. I don't have an nvidia card, but ATi's install program hoses your xorg.conf file every time, and if you use a text editor to set it up instead (not something Joe Q. User should be expected to do), the drivers are buggy at best and unusable at worst.
The +1 stuff does tend to be a subjective call, but once a post gets up to +4 or +5 or so, that tends to mean it's pretty good. The Slashdot system isn't all that broken. Just my two cents.
Not really. In that circumstance, the kid is breaking the law. The theater isn't responsible, just like if you buy beer with a convincing fake ID, the store isn't responsible.
And when was the last time you updated Windows (or your drivers or what have you) or installed a non-trivial program?
I'm guessing more than 24 days ago.
I do believe that the Creative Nomad was released well before the iPod.
That said, hierarchial menus date back to, well, to very far back. Certainly before Creative was ever incorporated.
Of course. However, my buddy list is full of computer geeks, most of whom are using GAIM or Adium and not the official AIM client (and thus are not susceptable to this virus, or at least, won't spread it to me).
I can't speak for KDE, but both GNOME and XFCE show the file extentions (I don't even think there's a way to hide them, not that I'd want to). Then again, there's nothing special about the extention in Linux, and typically, excecutable files have no extention.
Every last bit of every demo for the PS3 was pre-rendered, or at least, that's the safest assumption to make. Sony did this with their last two systems, too. To be honest, I don't think we'll know how the games really look until the machine is released. I would be very surprised if it was significantly better than the other next-gen consoles. It's going to be about the same, just with more hype, as usual.
Blame that on the idiocy of what passes for a package system in Windows. Seriously. That problem is nonexistent on my Debian partition unless I as the user fuck something up really bad.
But that's an ugly hack, and sometimes I might want to listen to just one track. Besides, if Foobar2000 can play my MP3s gapless, why can't my portable player?
Personally, I don't think I would, but maybe there are some folks out there that would do it "because they can."
Of course. That's the whole point. It's not going to be actually useful (after all, OSx86 would probably not have drivers for a lot of non-Apple hardware) but it's fun to just play around with things.
No they're not, because Windows and Office are making hojillions of dollars. Seriously. Microsoft using Windows and Office to generate cash while they work on other projects that start out losing money is really nothing new.

Well, fuck, if you're using open source software anyway, rip the damn thing under Linux, and avoid the rootkit altogether.
Hey, cool! That way I can make purchases with other Slashdotter's credit cards! Sounds like fun to me!

Intel is in on it (and has been for far longer than AMD). As are dozens of other companies. NBC simply didn't have room to list them all.

.bin/.cue, then, although the term ISO is so ubiquidious that people use it even when there's more than one track on the disc.
For gaming machines, 3DMark tends to be a better benchmark. Or framerate in a game like Half-Life 2, Doom 3, or UT2004.
Me too. And there's a Linux version. In fact, the CVS Linux version even uses GTK2! Way better than the bloated Azureus.

The funny thing here is that when I IM people, I use proper English spellings and correct grammar.

Welcome to worm.com. Hacked by Chinese.

You sure RPM is still the most popular? I mean, I don't mean to sound like Debian Troll here, but there are an awful lot of popular .deb based distros.
Because they're about to sell their software rights to Microsoft, cancel the Linux version, and make a pact with Satan for the kingdoms of the earth.
Or, y'know, it could be because internet newbies assume every website ends in dot com.

Do any of these support gapless playback, or do DAPs still suck for albums with transitions, like Abbey Road or Dark Side Of The Moon?
