  1. Slow down and ask for help on How Do IT Guys Get Respect and Not Become BOFHs? · · Score: 1

Look no one can do it all. I was also in this position, about 4 years ago. Eventually, you can't keep up. The company at the time couldn't afford to hire a full time person, so I asked for an intern. Trained him, and things started getting done better and faster, and my attitude improved. The company notices things like this, and if they are smart, try to keep their employees happy. All you can do is ask for the extra help. If they want to keep you happy they will capitulate. Otherwise start looking for another job, and let it be known that the environment is a hostile one to whoever handles HR. Last thing you want is to get fired for being a bastard. In IT you need to be a team player, and if that stigma gets thrust upon you... you're screwed!

I don't personally use Linux though I have fiddled with Slack 10 and Debian so maybe my perceptions are off, but the overall point is that those who support Linux and who say how easy it is to use ALWAYS say they got a family member/SO/whomever to use it AFTER they configured it for them so therefore, it must be easy to use. That's looking at it from the wrong angle.

This point here doesn't carry much weight: I've been in IT for almost 15 years now as well as supporting family and friends. Almost always, I have to setup the computer to make it easier for them. (MAC, WINODWS, or LINUX) Why, because the average user whether corporate or home can not configure a machine. Those who try usually kill their computers.

Windows is only easier because it's familiar... the above average user to the techie can thrive on linux... I can take anyone who has never worked on a computer and teach them any of the 3 major OS platforms equally.

Okay so it's not a few... but yet I never have these memory leaks. Whenever it grows in memory, it's because I have 20+ tabs open. I use it on quite a few P3s at the office, on lab boxes, however IE6 runs just as well on these boxes, and security is not so much of an issue. Those fall more under the ID 10 T errors.

So I don't understand the need for an even lighterweight version of Firefox? Are there REALLY that many sub P3 computers still out there, that are also being used as web boxes?

    Guys,

The iPOD is by no means superior to alot of the MP3 players on the market today, not in interface or design. It's a matter of preference in that regard. Personally, I find the Zune, and eSansa (which I own... drag and drop on any OS... yes please!) interfaces much more intuitive. The reason Apple did so well? It's plain and simple... THE COMMERCIALS AND ADS. Outside of Microsoft's Zune (a million units pushed already!?), I haven't seen any other MP3 player even try to do all the hype that the iPOD has. I used 2 devices before the IPOD that were just as good design wise as the ORIGINAL iPOD. But outside of the occasioanl ad in magazine, I can count the number of ads on 2 hands and feet that I saw for them both in roughly two years. Compare that to the media blitz of the iPOD and you will see why it's so popular. People are fancy marketing sheep, and will buy a boxed rock if marketed correctly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pet_rock

It just kills me when I use my eSansa 260 and people start saying iPOD this and that... I've personally converted about 7 iPOD users. Now many that bought into the fad now moving on to BETTER devices. The mentality of FANY BOYS never ceases to amaze me. But without you guys, I would never get better products cheaper... What a double-edge sword it is! To get better devices I have to listen to the prattle of sheep.

Apt was a god send, and I used on all my machines because yum sucked. Good scenario and all... but most industry's have checks before the product is even shipped. The quality check should ALWAYS be the last part of delivering any product, or YES it is your fault. It's your product, and just because something got missed, doesn't make it any less your fault. When you sell a product with your brand on it, it is your responsibility to the customers, ultimately. Taking your business elsewhere? How many lost cost FAB plants do you know that Apple could just up an easily move to? It's not a print shop, and the reason Apple chose to use them is in no doubt cost/performance that then gets passed on to the end user. But yeah realistically they can just change shops...

You may disagree, but YOU chose to use that print shop. YOU chose to let them ship your product without checking it first. Thus YOU are responsible for the final product. That is standard business practice. Once you start giving corporations 'outs' around this, you start getting shoddy products. One of the many arguments against outsourcing. A recent example of taking responsibility would be the first batch of XBOX 360es that were shipped with plastic between the processor and heat sink. Did Microsoft point fingers at the assembler? Nope they identified the problem, found a solution, and promised consumers they would get them new units. Mea Culpa. Not the.. Oh it's not our fault BS!

Apple should just have said, "We have found the error, and here's the fix. If you want a new unit, here's how to get one."

Most businesses who are buying their secretaries and general office staff are not going to purchase a $2000 plus machine. So it really doesn't matter if Apple is making a 'whole bells and whistles machine' at that price. The people who can afford to pay it, will, and most likely are already educated about it...

Mac Mini? My coworker and avid Apple fan who works P/T at an Apple store, just to get Apple discounts steered me away from it, saying "Mac Mini is a piece of crap!" after purchasing one for his father. Why did they come up with Boot Camp... plain and simple... the games. Most windows users I know are heavy computer gamers.

Lastly, but not least... who cares about hardware lasting X amount of years... spending 500 dollars every 5 years to get the latest [low end] computer is easier for most people to stomach, than spending just under $3000 for teh coolest L33T computer. Please note that most gamers I know only spend between $1200 and $1800 to build their gaming boxes, every 3 years or so. Apple fanatics as always are missing the point... computers are not going to fly as costing as much as down-payment on a car or even a house in some areas. I don't remember the last time I spent over $1500 for a personal machine, and I have 3 computers in a setup most people envy.

Oh, and I run linux.. so MAC OS X... doesn't really appeal to me from that standpoint. It's just another interface I would have to pay for. I say this as a well-paid educated computer professional of 13 years. I started on a MAC, and yes OSX is the best OS [for sale] on the market... But saying they can't compete with Dell for that reason... well I'm starting to think most Slashdotters have forgotten why computers are now mainstream... in homes as well as offices... and it sure isn't because of having the best hardware/software.
