I currently run both at home and at work. The biggest reason I think Fedora is being released into the wild by RedHat is.... Fedora users want a server where they can get that xmms with MP3 functionality, or get those w32codecs to use in MPlayer.
The reason RedHat sees so much commercial support is that they uphold people's patents by not including functionality to certain apps that would violate it.
However, their Fedora users could care less about that, and will quickly jump ship to Ubuntu to be able to add that repo and get all that functionality, patents be damned!
So in order to not lose their commercial support, but keep their FC users happy (aka RHEL Beta Testers) they need to release FC to the wind, so that they can go Ubuntu wild (patents be damned!).
I think it makes since.... as I use APT-RPM on my FC boxes using ATrpms.net as my base, this will allow the FC team to put that illicit MP3 support in, and not be connected OFFICIALLY to the upstanding RedHat corporation.;)
but my office in a mixed windows/linux/environment
1) I can install and secure OS X in just under an hour
2) I can install Ubuntu or FC3 and secure it 1 and 1.5 hours respectively.
3) I can install and secure Windows2000 or XP in 3 to 4 hours.
The average Windows user has NEVER installed the OS, and if they had, Linux would look a lot more inviting. As a Desktop Gui, I actually do think, and so do many WINDOWS only users at my company, think the Linux Desktop is superior. (FC3 and Ubuntu both running Gnome). People always ask what I'm running, and when I say Linux they are always surprised.... especially when I start navigating through desktops and running multiple apps to help them out.
Most Windows users who have to wipe their machines because "it's slow" from viruses or spyware, have no clue about getting the latest spy-something and ad-aware to harden their systems... or running the updates to get all their security packs... "What? Well, I went to Windows Update like you told me, and ran the updates. I have to reboot and do it again? I have to reboot several times?! I'll do it later!"... How often have I heard that!?!
Yes you can get more support on Windows for certain appplications etc... but if major companies would support Linux as they do Windows.... which would be truly... "Better ready for the desktop"?
Although not widely advertised or used (most of which is Microsoft's fault. The free-CD ($4.99 shipping) you can get from xbox.com has exactly the option to demo a game, then if you like it, to purchase the full title.
Honestly why they haven't publicised it more is beyond me, because anyone who loves those pop-caps games and solitaire games you can get online at msn.com would love XBOX Arcade. It should have been included with every XBOX Live CD... I personally love those puzzle games, and many of the older people I know will play those without batting an eye.
As a part of my Systems Analyst course back in college, we had to research and promote a new technology. I based my reasearch paper on this exact same technology back in 1993, when it was first in development by a company in California.
12 years later it is finally hitting the market!
When people call you up asking you to fix what is wrong, after you have just finished a hectic 8-hour shift... You tend to want them to use stuff that'll make both of your lives easier.
It was not before they filed their patent. While in the "Patent Pending stage" Sony started using the Immersion technology. So Sony IS in violation of Immersion's patent. Many other companies have been licensing the technology for years. Why should Sony be allowed to skip free?
Freedom of the Press, I thought was the right to print/publish any information that you wanted others to read.
If you take it in the context of the paragraph it would mean... I have the freedom to speak my mind, and publish what I think. I don't see how journalistic freedom, and brazenly publishing stolen information ever got interpreted into being Freedom of the Press.
Over time people will always twist the original intent to suit their needs, and this is one case (and many like it) where I think that is strongly the case. IMHO
From reading the comments I can see that Napster is just doing a REAL poor job of marketing.
Because this is what they ARE offering:
$15 a month to download and listen to as many songs as you want
AND
for $1 dollar buy only the songs you want to keep
This is what they actually offer... if they were smart and marketed it this way... it would make much more sense to the average consumer. They would then appeal to the people who may want to hear a whole album and only pay for the songs they like.
Worthless? It would be perfect for video game consoles. No need to compress images... just spool stuff off in raw format. Making games faster and with the ability to have more features without worrying about space.
I started on a MAC back in the 80s... it was the first type of computer I ever used. Thus I started with a one button mouse...
I absolutely hate having to use both the keyboard and mouse in conjuction to access sub-menus... I used to find this VERY annoying, now I remind you... I started on a MAC. When it was my first happenstance to use a two button mouse to access menus... yes I did find it easier to navigate and get around the screen... Why because I'm not a great typist and I tend not to keep my hand on the keyboard while using the mouse, so I look down at the keyboard to locate the key... the mouse ay move in the process... yada, yada... Control-clicking felt awkward from the very beginning, right clicking felt perfect... and sped up my productivity. Anyone who is using control menus on a regular basis anyway, would probably be more comfortable with a two button mouse...
But as for Apple saying that a one-button mouse is simpler... that's a load of crock... that logic can easily be divided 50/50... but considering how much of a market share Windows has 80 to Apples 12... you would think most users would be already used to a 2 button mouse.
Now Apple folks are going to say this and that about not catering to Windows users... that's fine... but then Apple will forever remain a niche player, catering to the elitest who refuse to see the business side of this. So then what is the point of the MAC mini? Also, understand that most of the world is using a 2 button or more mouse... What sense does it make staying simpler if 80% of the rest of the world is already over that hump?
A) Talks about China censorship in relation to Google
B) Doesn't think that the government may have another reason besides the obvious clap-trap for blocking the sale
With everything going on in the news, does anyone believe they would block the sale of IBM over something as trivial as industrial espionage? Many of you have pointed out the plethora of other companies that are based overseas, but yet fail to see that something else maybe behind the "rumored" blocked sale of IBM to Lenovo. Take of the blinders and take a look around.
The first thing I noticed was lack of an analog monitor connection. This automatically drives up the price for most would be buyers looking to replace their PCs. Most users would rather spend $500 on a new PC and use their existing montior, thna be forced to buy a DVI compliant (read: flat screen) monitor. The people that can afford both... wouldn't they just buy one of the little half-eggshell IMACs with the monitor attached and basically get the same thing?
I myself think the size is great... contemplated buying one... saw that... and was like oh well I'm not going to replace my 21" Trintron flat CRT with a flat panel (I could afford) just to use it... and most new users sans anything thinking they are getting a new computer for $499, only to have a flat-panel pricetag of $250 to $1000 (compared to a CRT from $60 to $200) for a compatible 15" to 19", is going to balk at the price. Sometimes I think Apple just doesn't get it.
Great product, but they missed one key factor, in the crowd they are supposedly going after.... they want ALL AROUND affordable.
I really don't understand your FUD statement at all. Frankly I think what they are saying about training and having the same look-and-feel across platforms makes perfect sense.
For example... I'm trained to use OpenOffice on Windows... Everything is where it is should be if I move to Linux... but then I got to a Mac and have to relearn the interface? That throws all my training out the window... as I now have to get up to speed....
There argument is very relevant, ask any Designer who started with Photoshop on a Mac, and then had to move to a Windows version and relearn the interface... because it was designed to accomodate the Windows Users.
I have always believed that interfaces should function relatively the same across platform if you are calling it the same product. Thus, when you tell someone you are proficient in Photoshop or OpeneOffice, you can sit down and get tow ork right away... not muck around with trying to figure out all th enuances in every interface.
I RTFA... and I fail to see how DW's templates are better than include files?
Most people developing in PHP or ASP are using a server, and usually developing for multiple browsers (something that DW still hasn't gotten right)
I used to use DW then moved on to homesite because I got sick of cleaning up code or rewriting the javascript code to work in both IE, Netscape, and Moziila that DW created.
Now I use Apache, developing with Kdewebdev w/CSS (Quanta) and mutiple browsers and get the pages to look correct the first time all the time, regardless of what browser is ised, for the WYSIWYG portion of it. Include files are not inferior if you are viewing the pages in real browsers. Difference is, you see your changes as they happen as opposed to having to go back and tweak them per browser as I always had to with DW.
I used DW up to even the MX version... and it still had all the same problems it did with formatting and javascript from previous versions.
God slap me... if I haven't been saying this for years!
Make the frigging punishment fit the crime! I'm tired of paying to keep non-violent criminals locked up! Put them on house arrest... make them work a job (as good as they can get) and pay for their own incarceration and fines. Really, what sense does it make to imprison someone for that amount of time, only for most to come out worse than they went in?
The fat-cats punish crimes that pseudo-hurt their checkbooks more severely than crimes that actually need to be punished! That says alot today about the state of the world!
That's impossible... because all the documentation has simply... DISAPPEARED!
However, SERIOUSLY read the Patriot Act if you need to see some of the rights that have been lost. You'll have all the documentation you need.
Heck I've seen so many articles on it... and read so much crap from people... I've been desensitized to it... much like violence on TV and videogames!

Adobe has a had a Linux port as far back as Redhat 8.0. I think it started when Photoshop 7 was being released... they released version 5.5 or 6 (I beleive) for linux.

I use gimp because
1) It runs on linux and windows (so I can use it anywhere
2) It seems to be faster accessing large RAW files than Photoshop
3) When I need to save in JPG or PNG is does a better job in compression, usually at better visual quality (Don't take my word for try it yourself)
4) I customize the perl scripts (soon pyhton as well) often to my taste, to get the output I want (which is alot harder in Photoshop)
5) Lastly pricetag! Photoshop is so overpriced it's insane!
The only thing I find myself ever going back to Photoshop for is the text features and ability to do shadows, effects, bevels, etc on different layers.... that is much easier in Photoshop than Gimp....
Otherwise I would use GIMP over Photoshop anyday.
Was the parent called a troll because most slashdotters don't get sex to keep them warm? Power outage... I'd keep warm...
as I have a backup generator... What?
As a black man who was born in England and raised in the US... this is different how!?

No... says I who has been trying to fudge it for a month. The rivatv and nvtv driver support is whacked out right now.
Because you frequent Slashdot!?
