What on earth does it mean to say that "work is progressing" to remove the tag? I've never looked at the code, but I would think that you could disable it with a simple change in one place: either remove the keyword from the parser so it is never recognized, or make it a no-op once it is. Why would getting rid of the tag be complicated enough to take a while and exhibit "progress"?
One thing that people seem not to be considering is writing programs to generate documents. TeX is excellent for this. I have no idea how it is done for MS Word but suppose that in recent versions you can generate OOXML. I've generated a bit of ODF for OpenOffice but found it rather tedious and very verbose, and there is the additional problem that there is really no relationship between using OpenOffice the usual way via the GUI and writing ODF XML directly.
They aren't investigating crimes, but they are screening for contraband and evaluating security risks, both of which are things that often done by law enforcement personnel. It's quite true that a TSA officer need not have the same training as a city cop or highway patrolman, but the problem is that these are generally people with no training or experience in any relevant area who whose training by the TSA is evidently very limited.
Agreed. The only downside to using R for this purpose is that it doesn't give you the constant display of your data that a spreadsheet does. I mostly don't care, and in any case, if you have a lot of data, you can't see it much of it in any given view of spreadsheet anyhow, but some people really do want the spreadsheet display.
Well said. In addition to the strategy of deflection, much of what apologists for Islamic hegemonism say reflects projection - they accuse others, especially Jews, of doing what they themselves do or would do.
That was a weird movie, dark and comic-bookish, but I thought that both sides were portrayed as rather strange. The Persians were portrayed as the aggressors, which is entirely accurate historically.
Here in Canada we have a service called Interac which not only handles bill payments but allows anyone with an account in a participating bank to transfer funds to another such person by email. I don't see why systems of this type cannot replace PayPal.
Hogwash. While there is variation among Muslim sects and among individual Muslims, the fact is that mainstream Islam advocates values that pose a threat to those of us who value freedom and equality. That it is acceptable to spread Islam by violence is a mainstream view. That only Muslims can be full citizens is a mainstream view. This is what one finds in the core texts of Islam, in mainstream teaching, such as that at Al-Azhar University, and in the actions and positions of Muslim states and organizations. To take just one example, the 51 states in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation unanimously condone terrorism. To take another, look around the world at which countries discriminate on religious grounds. Virtually all Muslim countries do; very few others do, and even there, for the most part, it takes the form of symbolic trivia like requiring the powerless monarch to belong to a certain religion.
Adopting the metric system will eliminate a lot of confusion and ease standardization of container sizes and other such things, which in the long run will save a lot of money. Indeed, the Death Star will be cheaper to design and build, and more likely to work, if all of the work is done in metric.
It is claimed that the Qur'an was written down as Muhammed recited it, but that this was done by quite a few different people, each recording some bits. The assembly of these various bits into a single text took place after Muhammed's death. In any case, we have idea whether this claim is true. There is no evidence outside of Muslim tradition for the existence of the Qur'an until more than 100 years after the death of Muhammed. Even the inscriptions on the Dome of the Rock, which are from the 690s and do not clearly exhibit Muslim theology, are over 50 years after his death. This issue is hotly debated, but there is so little evidence for either the Qur'an itself or more generally for Islam during the 7th century that respectable scholars have proposed that Islam was created as the ideology of Arab imperialism and that the biography of Muhammed and the Qur'an are essentially a back story.
The fact of the matter is that Gaza, Judea, and Samaria have high rates of population GROWTH, as do Israeli Arabs, which by itself puts paid to the ridiculous claim that Israel is engaged in ethnic cleansing. The fact that Israel admits over 100,000 Palestinians from Gaza, Judea, and Samaria for medical care (provided at no charge if the PA does not pay for it) every year is also inconsistent with the claim of ethnic cleansing. Jordan has killed far more Palestinians that Israel ever has.
Laches is an equitable notion of general applicability that prevents action against a tortfeasor if the victim has unduly delayed enforcement of its rights if the delay causes prejudice to the tortfeasor (e.g. the infringer has made large investment in the mark and built up business that would be adversely affected by having to stop using the mark). In the case of trademark infringement, there are specific doctrines, in most jurisdictions consisting of acquiescence and waiver, which prevent enforcement even if laches is not applicable.
I don't know. My impression is that STEM types write write as well as anybody else and often know quite a bit about music, art, history, and so forth The problem is that most non-STEM types lack even rather basic knowledge of STEM.

I have never liked TeX's macro language, but there is now LuaTex, which provides a much, much nicer language.
Wow! I don't think I've ever see an AC before who was an agent of disinformation for the Chinese government.

True, except that the battery-powered drill from Home Depot doesn't have errors in its statistical functions.

China was not colonized by Europeans. Europeans established a few small enclaves but never took control of the country as a whole.
If Pakistanis want their country to cease to be viewed as a hotbed of terrorism, the best approach would be for them to stop supporting terrorism.

Exactly. I would include that in my definition of "working".

The obvious answer is Klingon.

Heck, he may well have been a Slashdot editor.
Uh, no. That is not how the UN works. The UN works by majority vote, except that, on the Security Council, the five permanent members have a veto.

The news is precisely that rather than moderating this outrageous system they're using new technology to extend it.

Hear, hear. I wish I had mod points. I'm amazed and disappointed at the nasty responses to this perfectly reasonable question.
