And then those are those members of the slashdot crowd, who, frustrated by the WORTHLESS interfaces of every other player on the market, but were educated enough about such things to recognize the source of the problem, and its solution - the iPod.
The iPod is probably one of the most brilliantly conceived wonders of HCI *ever*. The iPod took a problem that no one else had solved effectively and reduced it to 4 buttons, a wheel, and some Very Easy menus. But you go on using that piece of shit 1997 player and piece of shit software Winamp. Why so many people still use winamp is totally beyond me. Its the most cumbersome, awkward interface that anyone could have possibly put on a computer, and it hasn't fixed these age-old problems EVER.
And by the way, please tell me what music player you can buy right now that doesn't use DRM or lock out another vendor's DRM.

Have it shot down?
I personally think its a little absurd to attempt to "punish" someone for their crimes. How exactly does locking someone up for 30 years for killing someone serve justice? IMHO, the only justice is for the crime to have never been committed in the first place.
Depends on the type of rebellion (and the country). I, for one, take great national pride in my right to burn the American Flag, even though I won't, and anyone who thinks that right should be taken away doesn't understand the ideals that the United States was founded on in the first place.
Maybe I'm missing something here. Since when is it universally acknowledged that BPL is a joke technology? I actually happen to be a BPL subscriber (Manassas, Va), switched from Comcast cable service recently. I know that the local ham radio club definitely has been having problems, but as far as I know, these problems are being addressed and now the system is online throughout the city, working. So, what's the problem?
And having said that, software that runs such systems should apparently be far more perfect than it is. To release such imperfect software to the public is irresponsible and unethical, and those programmers should probably lose their jobs.
Ok, here's my idea: all of us with non-commercial websites that want to help rid the world of IE, lets just make our CSS incompatible with IE! Then, as soon as there are more sites that are incompatible with IE than there are incompatible with firefox, there will be a mass exodus to firefox!
but "always" is not a very long time. Frankly, the Micro$oft Monopoly has only really existed for a little over a decade, and for that decade, they have had virtually no competition, thus explaining why none of their software has really made any significant improvements in that decade. Now here we are with Tiger out the door and Longhorn a year and a half away. Apple has GAINED 1% market share in the last quarter, and Morgan Stanley forecasts them having 6% by year's end. Granted, these are still pretty insignificant gains until you consider that Apple hasn't gained market share for over twenty years... Eventually, Microsoft is going to have to innovate to stay in.
No its not. In fact, its not easy at all, its a pain in the ass. In unix I type 'exit' to get back. THAT is easy. Clicking three or four times to get back into a usermode that won't allow me to install programs and also won't allow me to RUN many programs is not easy. I, for one, do happen to run Firefox, and everything else, in administrator mode, and its not because I am dumb, its because Microsoft is dumb for not having an effective user permissions system, let alone anything resembling a meaningful security framework for their "enterprise grade" operating system. Maybe Microsoft should take a cue from Apple, bite the bullet, and swallow the fact that technology developed ALMOST FORTY YEARS AGO is vastly superior to their software, and that maybe they should base Longhorn on that "old technology" , rather than wasting billions of dollars and years of R&D on something that apparently will amount to little more than a new color for their error screens.
Of course, if such a designer did exist, then we would certainly be perfect in every way imaginable and be completely immortal, no?
I just find it rather amusing that you could call other people ignorant and egotistical for clinging to these ideas and yet you yourself are apparently worthy of designer of existence, and that you accuse other people of trying to bring unscientific ideas into science and yet you yourself feel that a lack of evidence is negative evidence. I'm not saying that I disagree with you--I believe science should be taught in science class, not religion, but if you're going to argue this point at least use arguments that make sense.
It's not about knowing. Its about believing. We all believe something. Ever taken a class in metaphysics? We don't know anything. You don't and I don't. We only believe things. But just because we don't actually know things doesn't mean that we should deny them to be so--if we did, nothing would ever get done! All we can do is take what we perceive and feel, and construct our own notion of truth, whatever that may be.
Give me a break. That post is so full of shit its disgusting. Apple realized that people don't want programs they want a computer. Apple innovated that. Microsoft just jumped on the bandwagon.
And as for their "innovation" in marketing, there are some, myself included who might argue that anti-competitive business practices and blatantly monopolistic behavior don't qualify as legitimate marketing.
I look forward to the day when the Googles and Apples of the world drive Microsoft out of business.
You know, if you're going to call yourselves a news site, at least try to report things in an unbiased manner... Here's my thoughts: THANK GOD. I personally hope they sue the fuck out of every single person who has stolen from them, and I honestly don't care. Seriously, stop whining. If you're going to break the law, accept the consequences. The only rights who are being trampled upon here are the artists and the labels who have broadcast them to the world.
I don't think that anyone is denying that Windows has improved over the last ten years, but the fact is, if you look at the features in Windows 95 (average user experience ten years ago) to the features in Windows XP (average user experience now), there really isn't any significant difference in terms of features and capabilities, at least as far as the average user can tell. And as for the improvements that have been made in usability, security, and overall stability, these aren't really improvements at all--they're bug fixes, issues that should have been resolved ten years ago. Now the same thing is happening again. Windows XP was released in 2001, and since then, no significant changes have been made, and as a result, the user experience is arguably worse than it was ten years ago, simply due to this ridiculous amount of unhindered malware.
So, the problem with service packs is that they aren't real upgrades--they're just patches, bugfixes. A good example is the Windows Firewall--why wasn't it turned on in the first place? And yet Microsoft issuing a service pack to turn it on is an upgrade?
Slashdot is not a news site. It says "news for nerds" but it is not a news site. It is a blog. Those of you who honestly believe slashdot to be a serious news site need to read real news, and probably get a life.
Thus it follows that those of you who are bothered by the large amount of april fools jokes posted today need to pull the stick out of your ass, and read real news, and read slashdot as what it is, a technology blog, really no different than sites like engadget.
Seriously, a BSD machine being up for years is really not unusual. Having said that, windows has gotten a lot better over the years. I probably only have a crash or lockup about once a month as opposed to several times a day.

And who in science will stand up and say that there is nothing more to a person than a finite state machine?
As much as many of you people may scoff at the metaphysical and spiritual arguments, they are still valid arguments, and they still may be true.

True, but unlike in Windows, it also wouldn't have superuser privileges.
But apparently that exploit won't even exist until July...

Anyone know if/where the sources are available for launchd?

Understandable. However, if the Konqueror people really want CVS history, perhaps their license should reflect this.
or maybe it should be designed so that the average user can and will easily use a normal user account?
I have also heard very good things about Eclipse with Java. However, Eclipse is terrible for C++.
when one supposed news site quotes another supposed news site and they both get it wrong?

The kernel is written in C, and for very good reasons.
Some operating systems are more stable than others.
