I hope and pray that Mozilla will force a browser revolution. I see a future with truely standardized browsers, a networkable format for bookmarks, and many other wonderfull features.
What I don't see helping this come about is the law suit of MS will help bring it about. MS is now on the browser offensive again. They are now going for the jugular and Netscapes next Gen is not ready yet.
Then we have browser like Opera and the browser in Star Office that are fighting for some market share. I don't think they will capture their intended market unless they fully support standards like Mozilla does.Hopefully Mozilla will force every browser to support the true W3 standards!

3dfx is a monopolistic company that will NOT Emprace open source. They wanted some developers for closed source drivers.
SGI is looking for people to make the opensource support for their system better. They are also donating a TON of their own technology to the Kernel and X projects including GL and its companian technology, SMP work, etc.
In short OpenSource people LIKE what SGI is trying to do. People don't like companies who release Binary only drivers like 3dfx.
On a personaly note OpenSource is why I run linux not Solaris 7 (now that it's free for non-comercial use) or *BSD.
Take a look at most websites.... Take a good look at MOST open source sites. The HTML sucks. The largest opensource sites are pretty good but how many of the people on this page are running large sites. Did any of you code the GNOME, KDE, or Slashdot sites? I didn't think so. Yelling plain text at the top of you lungs is silly and best and elitist at worst. To put up a decent web page a person should not have to know the ins and outs of every browser available or the exact html code used. I use AbiWord for word processing and it uses XML for it's files. I DON'T, although I could, edit the documents with VI.
My point is this. HTML is a file format just like.doc for word or postscript or XML(they latter 2 are both text based!). I don't edit any of them by hand altough I could. HTML is generally best left to a WYSIWG tool that is writen specifically to make HTML for current browsers.
First off I see references in all of the postings to negativity... I didn't read any negative replies... but my theshold is set to 1.
Secondly 3dfx is evil here is why: Glide is a propriatary protocol. 1) My roommate is the author of the GLIDE wrapper for windows and the G200 (it now supports all cards but the G200 was his goal.) They have retro activly aplied a licence to there SDK to make it illegal to use to write glide wappers and sent cease and desist orders to all glide wrapper authors. 2) Most Windows games that use glide Don't use glide wrapped around OpenGL they use straight GLIDE. This means 3DFX had a monopoly. I say had becuase most new games support GL or D3D. 3) 3dfx doesn't embrace the linux ideals. They sure as hell won't open source there drivers and no they make no indication of doing so in there post. 4) The 3d produced by a 3dfx card is at the bottom of the visual quality spectrum yet all anyone talks about is the frame rate.... the frame rate when frame syncronization is turned off!
The thought of 3dfx joining in linux development scares me. If linux gaming gets locked in to 3dfx I think I'll switch to console games only! I think this is one of the few vendors linux would be better off not working with. Their products though fast are visually the lowest quality.
Thin clients harken back to the days of multics. (For those who don't know mutics was esentially a time sharing system meant to be usable as a utility, where you paid for compute cycles.) Timesharing didn't make it (out side of the corpate enviroment!) All of the companies/people that toute thin clients have yet to describe anything other then the raw technology going in to the clients and maybe the server. Well I want to know about the billing structure. Why do I want to pay every time I use a word processor and then pay for the storage of my documents... They would be rediculous! Plus do you own the thin client or do you rent it. Before att was split you were not allowed to hook your own phone up to the bell network so that a ill behaved phone didn't kill the phone system. I for one like be Linux desktop system and don't mind setting up computers for other people. I DON'T WANT A SMART TERMINAL ON MY DESK!
I hear alot of talk on this thread about clustered systems (IBM SP2)... Linux Hot swaps -- hell yes! Use a beowulf cluster! Whole machine can come and go!
If I remeber corectly IBM sp2 frames (which have been mentioned a few times here) don't allow per machine hot swaps (Processor/Mem/Hd/Controllers) but JUST LIKE A BEOWULF CLUSTER allow whole machines to come in and out. It was just a few days ago I read an article about relacing an SP2 frame with a beowulf cluster. To me 256 PIIs at maybe say even an outragiosly high failure rate of 5% would still be a fast reliable high uptime cluster. AND it would still not cost alot.
I'm not particularly pro-Microsoft but a luser (read bofh) friendly version of linux uses almost as much memory as Windoze. My main assumption is a luser friendly version of linux will be either Gnome or KDE based or at least something similar. The linux kernel has a small memory footprint but X + a tool kit (GTK or QT) + Corba (ORBit or KDE equiv) + window manager that looks good + a few apps uses up my full 128MB or ram. Hell, throw in a few netscape windows and I was swaping when I had 256MB of RAM. I don't see a memory impaired or even really a processor impaired computer running linux a success at home. What about games? which are a HUGE market to home users. What about compatability with work systems? It's nice to be using two very compatible systems at home/work. I think a cheep linux system is a great Idea but getting a way with less memory / cheap cpu is not OK. By this I'm assuming he doesn't mean AMD cpu by cheeper cpu now that intel has a cpus in the same price range as amd.
What about Hardware? Should EEs and CEs need certification? A large part of the y2k bug is hardware with not enough bits for the date. As a CE (computer engineer) I find this whole Idea a litlle disturbing. Would I have to pass both a hardware and a software test? Many people bounce from lowlevel software to hardware and back again. Do all of those people need two licences?
Auto engineers arn't required to have a licence. Neither are engineers who design medical equiptment -- however the final products from both fields must pass certain federal standards. Either product could have been designed by the mythical infinate monkey room or some gifted savant.
Would webdesigners be required to be certified? How about sys-admins? They can be responsable for very inportant data. For example the sysadmins at NSI Inc. or IRS or an Army stratigic planning system. Should they be licensed to setup a system with no holes and disabling al bugs?
I think licensing programmers 1) opens up a can of worms we don't want open (who else do we require to be licensed). 2) would eliminate free software and savant programers.
Thats fine but if I'm not mistaken that is for civil engineers only. I'm sure the Iron ring doesn't go to chem engineers or bio engineers or computer/electrical engineers.
After reading the article all I could do was laugh!
Not one of the sources was a programmer. They were all Dr. of MIS, or Analyst for XYZ. No actual programers were interviewed as to weather they thought it was a good idea.
Personally I think it sucks. Requiring coders to be licensed would be like requiring authors to be licensed before they could write a book or artcle. Lets see those author/analysts deal with that!
Is no one else bothered by the fact that 3dfx is the ONLY 3d accellerated card under linux. Most linux users foam at the mouth about the Microsoft monopoly but no one seems to mind that only 1 3d card supports 3d in Linux.
Besides 3dx cards have the lowest quality visually of any major 3d card.
