the only problem is, with flash media (SD cards I have), I've been running into problems where I can't stream data off the card fast enough for my palm to play it. I have a zire 71, and tried to give it a fullscreen divx (320x320) to play, and all mmplayer could do was give me errors about transfer speed off the sd card. So I think UMD could be good.... if they make cheap writers for it :)

of course shader model 3.0 won't be used until directx 9.0c comes out (summer I think). Which then means that developers *might* use it then (yes i know the beta is out now), which means, it won't be needed probable until late this year, and maybe into next year as developers get familiar with it. By then, I'm sure there will be a new gen of vid cards out from ati and nvidia that will support it. And as far as image quality goes.... ATI wins. Look at the screens. And there is also the new AA stuff ati added in for when you are getting 60+fps in games to have a more dynamic AA done to the scene makign it look even better. The best review/comparison you will get is gonna be from HardOCP, so i suggest anyone thats interested in PS3.0, and the ati/nvidia battle to check them out.

not to flame.. but you are basically saying that you didn't get a good framerate as they were stress testing. the 100+ heroes in one area not doing good is YOUR machine.. not their fault... list some specs so we can see if it's reasonable. Do you expect them to drop the quality level of the whole game because your machine can't keep up. Some of us are willing to spend the extra to make our games look good, and run well... and I don't think we should be punished because of people who expect their old machine to play everything current. Lag is their fault, but it was beta... an d they were obviously stress testing, so what did you expect. They basically gave you a cool event while at the same time getting important info so they can tweak their servers and make it better for the masses.

well.. the school was called CDIS, but it was recently bought by the arts institute, so now I think they are calling it AICDIS. You can check out their site at Artschool From what I've heard, they will soon be offering a degree program in game development. The teachers there for the most part are very skilled and good to the students. The cost is kind of high because it is a private institution also. As far as getting a job... I ended up getting a programming job at a business doing .NET and database stuff... but at this point I don't have a demo reel to give to any companies I apply at which can be a HUGE bonus. Some of the other people I went to school with (as well as one one my past teachers), do have jobs... some with ubisoft... and a couple other companies. On the whole.. it was a positive experience, but for a career, I recomment a computer science degree from a university, and spend you spare time making a demo to hand out as well as reading all you can on game design and engineering. 3d math, physics, and good object oriented design are key things to know. Game companies seem to be willing to teach you the sdk related things once you are working there... you are best off with a solid grounding in the concepts you will be using while there.

I agree that more GUI will make linux easier to use, and I'm looking forward to it. But if something breaks.. at least theres the option of fixing it. When something breaks in Windows, sure I could probably fix it... but who knows what broke with it. If something fails in windows, I'll trust a re-install to fixes.. if something breaks in linux.... well..... umm..... I thought stuff just didnt break in linux :) Except for the apps that can just be re-installed.

  20. Re:Still, there are major problems. on THG On Migrating To Linux · · Score: 1

I understand that linux might be more difficult in some cases to install over windows. But if I look at my experiences with users I know, even though windowsXP might be an easy point and drool install, they still phone me, and pay me to do it for them. I have friends that are for the most part computer literate, yet when it comes to a re-install, they shy away and get me to do it so that they have a properly configured install. Sure, it works after a fresh install, but there are options to be turned off and on, 3rd party software to install, updates to do. Any they can't handle most of that on their own. I usually end up with a working install that will prompt them to install all the updates for any software they might need, just so they don't have to deal with it. The only time I can see an average user being able to install windows on their own now, is usually with "recovery cds", and most of them are scared of that. So at this point, the only thing I can see that is holding back linux from mass amounts of people switching over, is hardware vendors not releasing drivers (or letting others make them), and games. I long for the day that openGL 2.0 comes out and hopefully a plethura of games for it also, then I can make a complete switch. I run windows for one reason... DirectX. At this point its the only reason I don't tell everyone I know to switch. So for now I'm stuck with a windows gaming box, and a linux workstation at home :(
