  1. Re:You've missed the point on A Mythbuster's Biggest Tech Headaches (and Solutions) · · Score: 3, Interesting

I agree. Even for someone who's heard of Linux, sometimes the sheer number of distros out there can be overwhelming. Now this theoretical reader has a place to start.

Somehow I suspect 116,144.654 is a bit overblown, and the About section amused me because obviously setting Blackle to your homepage only saves energy if you have Google for your homepage in the first place. I actually use mycatholic.com for my homepage, and you can just customize the colors right there. Also, wouldn't a black Google be really hard on low-vision uses? I think I'd get a headache staring at this all day.

I don't know which I like better: the idea of parents' lives being easier not having to try and decipher their kids themselves all the darn time anymore, or what it could offer for insight into language study.

Had my first experience with the Wii from about 1PM yesterday until 6:30AM this morning. Freakin' sweet. I most assuredly like the Wii more than the 360. Better games, and the Wiimote is way better than I thought it would be when I first saw the design.

Isn't this the same kind of thing people tried with a XXX-domain? IIRC, both sides of the issue thought it was a bad idea.

Though I'm entirely for a company being able to restrict what can be accessed on its own machines, on company time. I'm sorry, but if you're such a sex-addicted moron you want to access porn at work, you need help. [/2 cents]

I'm in a programming class right now (literally: my notes are open in another window) and GOTO hasn't even come up. It's an intro-level class, but... I see WHY it's used, and it for sure has its purpose, but if there's a more efficient way to program, duh people are going to go for it. And "registration required"? Ha: http://www.bugmenot.com/ (And yes, the NY Times is on there.)

If it counts for anything, I've learned a great deal just from reading the replies to this post. Currently, I'm a CIS major, and I've learned some stuff here (though Window-key + L has been a favorite of mine at home to protect from an overly-curious parent or sibling,) from reading. I think I can sympathise with the origional post on the concentration issue. I have ADD and am paying an extra $120 a semester to have my own dorm room. (That suppliment was the cheapest out of the 6 schools I applied to, though.) I'm actually rather petrified about concentrating in a cube-town, but I've read some very helpful things here that will at least help me address security concerns, regardless of how private or sensetive whatever stuff I'm putzing with is. I have no clue how to do it, but if there were a way to change people's ringtones after they arrive and set all the phones to go off simotaniously, that would be a prize.
