    if you make the encryption rotate around itself (modulus 27 would be enough to encode letters and spaces) and determine whether to add or subtract each letter based on the starting letter and the previous encoded letter with the arraingement of letters in the encoded file moved using a second pad it would make decrypting it immensly difficult because there would no longer be a means of determining characters by their usage frequency, especially if the message is surrounded/ infiltrated with junk random values that would be impossible for a, algorythm to determine with any better probability than random what a message said, especially if the random junk was written to weight itself towards certain values each message

    I was thinking make the "master" device beige and the "slave" devices black, that way the master devices would stand out..... oh wait... that probably wouldn't reduce the offensiveness would it.... but it would be funny as hell in an extreamly offensive way and teach whoever started the whole thing not to be stupid.

    IIRC the load balancing for Windows Update is carried out bu linux machines and i wouldn't be suprised if the windows servers have other layers of OSS machines shielding them from the outside world.

    CD-Keys for online games aren't so much DRM as access control, if you didn't buy the game then you don't get access to the companies resources for the master server and lists, I have a legit copy of ut2k3 and a while ago they even scrapped CD checking so you don't need to dig out the CD to play and i don't think recent version servers check player keys, i think they only check CD keys for access to the server listings. But then again Epic also released a linux version and i think the linux dedicated server is Open source 'cause they are cool like that.

    "emergency or migration purposes" Exactly That, the point is not that it will serve as a convenient way to store everyday files, it is good for fixing a messed up XP install or getting files you need under linux.

    It doesn't have to be that complicated, Instruct the USER to copy ntfs.sys onto a floppy disk or onto the thumb drive that knoppix can use for user data storage, or have it grab ntfs.sys off the windowsXP install CD that would be inserted in the second Optical drive

    I hope this will lead to flat panel displays that aren't so touch sensitive cause cleaning my LCD is a pain when crud gets stuck to it, also i would imigine this could lead to shaped displays and eventually being able to skin devices such as cell phones rather than buying a cell phone faceplate just downloading a cool design and being able to switch designs like ringtones (and even being able to photoshop your own designs) I'm waiting untill i can have a winamp vis that will animate my entire Case

    My University (Binghamton University) last year they (supposedly, i'm a freshman this year) would shut down ports for excessive use but now they have a 1MB/sec cap on the internet connection, although the transfer speed is lower than at home on my cable modem the latency is much lower (I play alot of online games) and the throttle keeps people from killing the connection for the rest of us.

    Actually you would still need permission to use a voice set just like you can't post the patch set from a software midi synth online without getting your ass sued. What would hurt the industry bad would be if enough disgruntled artists decided to put their voice sets under Creative Commons licence just to screw over the industry that screwed them.

    Actually using a sampled voice of someone would still fall under their copyright, just like you cannot make a remix of "The Real Slim Shady" (not that anyone would want to) and distribute it without permission.

    There is good music out there for those who look for it, start by skipping any artist you have heard on the radio or, god forbid, MTV. some places to look are Indie sites such as www.ampcast.com and programs like iRate Radio will help you, especially iRate.

    that is correct, but frequently on-network calls (same carrier) between cells are discounted, so if i call any landline during a weekday i pat $0.35/min but if i call another verizon cell phone i only pay $0.15/min (i know those are really expensive numbers but i don't use my phone and the minimum minutes/month plan comes to $15/month ($30 every 60 days) and all my minutes roll over each month so i always have enough minutes to make the calls i need without spending too much $)

    What about menuet? it can run a tiny server and was coded in pure assembly, I wouldn't be suprised if it's code was tight enough to resist any network attack due to the very small number of network services (shoutcast server, web server, and i think an FTP server) I'm not a security expert but i would imagine a product like that could be made air tight, perhapse boxes running customizable Assembly coded OS's will be the future of network security for at least the highest priority systems,

    wow, if they are regular /. readers why did they put the story up on a server that canno handle the load?

    anyways, it sounds pretty cool to watch, except that i can't get the video or pics off the site due to the /. effect. I wonder, were the balls uniform or were large and small mixed, a heterogenious drop would be very interesting, especially if dropped in waves (groups) so that balls moving down would meet balls on their initial bounce. Also dropping uniform sets of balls on differen shaped objects would be nice

    This isn't about IF someone will go over the edge, it's about WHEN someone goes over and how far over the edge they go, It could be as simple as a small pistol and one or two dead or it could be a Van loaded with explosives crashed into an RIAA target. The fact is that if you randomly select and threaten to ruin the lives of people eventually you are certain to pick the wrong person. And by limiting your search space to heavy file sharers you are selecting from a group of more hardcore internet users, which have an even higher concentration of unstable individuals. I don't think this will be an assasination, but more a blind lashing out against the RIAA or possibly a record store.... just to be safe i'm going to stay away from record stores to avoid becoming collateral damage.

    Will the Deal for an undisclosed amount of money be finalized in the undisclosed location that The Vice President was kept in?

    This sounds like a very good thing, IronPort will benifit by being able to tightly integrate SpamCop into hardware and SpamCop will become better due to less downtime due to DDoS attacks

    Yes, the Ti86 does have a way to check that, PxTest(), i once wrote a maze program that used pxTest() and PxChg() that could use any image as a maze as long as the two corners it used were clear (never bothered to make it autoclear the corners) I also implememted mine sweeper with everything except the timer and auto-clearing large blocks of zeroes (trying to write recursive functions on a platform where all variables are totally open is not usually worth it)

    I hope they hurry Up and make a PDA as powerful as *MY* desktop (Athlon 2200+/512megs/radeon9700pro), though my copy of XP has slowed down a ton, i didn't notice it till i created a clean account and everything was 10 times faster, i guess that would explian why they put linux on the PDA, in addition to the fact that winCE is neither free as in beer nor speech
