it depends entirely on what you use electronic documents for. if your workflow includes a lot of emailing documents to and from client, you will probably end up biting the pillow and buying MSO, if your documents are mostly internal or you print before sending, or send PDF's to clients you can use OO.o just fine and the built in free PDF export feature will save you the hassle of getting one for MSO, and save you the money of buying license and save you the risk of having too many copies of MSO installed and getting screwed over by the BSA. remember in order to get your volume license deals you have to agree to let MS send their storm troopers into your operation and inspect everything you do to make sure you are not using more copies than allowed, and that you don't have the correct number of copies but the license keys misfiled.

i have not had problems going between calc and excel, at work i made some fairly complex spreadsheet tools for manipulating and transforming strings and distributing case numbers across different dates (yea yea a spreadsheet is not a database and it sure as hell isn't a programming language) but it was the closest thing to a scripting host i had available to me and passing around html files loaded with javascript would have pissed off IT as the security software would false positive on that as malicious content.

anyways i would work on these files interchangeably on excel and OO.o without problem, though i did not use macros, all my code was done in the form of string functions in cells.
