as a fattie i can assure you that yes, overeating AND lack of exercise are both causes, and you need to attack both at once, otherwise gains you make in one will be sabotaged by the other "i'm walking 2 miles every day, sure i can have that triple whopper"

the fact that surgically cicumventing your stomach so you can't eat too much works does nothing to disprove exercise as being useful and vital to healthy weight loss. eating nothing but vitamins and water will help you lose weight, but so will amputating both legs, that doesn't mean you will be much healthier, just smaller.

  3. Re:I dunno, man. Snow is heavy on Vermont City Almost Encased In a 1-Mile Dome · · Score: 1

snow melts better from the bottom than from the top. when melting from the top the insulating properties keep the heat away altogether, heated from the bottom, the insulating effect can help because the heat under the snow is trapped by the snow so almost all of it is expended on the snow rather than dispersing into the environment, also water from melting snow does not fall away from the heat source, but rather sits on it and gets warmer as it flows down the surface of the dome, melting even more snow.

  4. Re:Hackers Diet FTW. on Why Doesn't Exercise Lead To Weight Loss? · · Score: 1

the problem is, there is no reliable way to measure that difference in the food we eat.

healthy choices about what to eat should be isolated from the control loop determining how much to eat, otherwise it is too easy to game your own wight loss system and convince yourself to go over because "they are HEALTHY calories"

The strategy i have found most successful is to use things like saturated fat content, amount of processing, etc. to decide what to buy when shopping, but use simple but unyielding calorie counting to decide how much to eat.

  5. Re:Electron-Proton Collisions? on Antimatter In Lightning · · Score: 1

well to start with electrons and protons don't destroy each other. if they were somehow forced together and you threw in an anti-neutrino maybe you could force the reverse of a neutron decay and make them into a neutron, but first you would need to figure out how to force them all together and how to convince the quarks involved to shuffle identities.

so if it's even possible within the laws of physics it's probably at least a thousand years before we can do anything like that, and i don't see any reason to be doing it in the first place since it's pretty easy to find neutrons so why try to make them?
