    they could also weld a pair of metal bars angling down from the sides of their boat towards the back, that would push the net under. the boat wouldn't be able to go in shallow water anymore but that's no big deal, even better of you hinge the bars so they can be folded up when not needed.

    the crews don't want the weapons either, the vast majority of ships never get attacked and the vast majority of those that do get attacked, no crew is killed, so why take an unlikely situation and make it more deadly by bringing in gunplay against guys with rocket launchers?

    it's not just insurance companies, many ports frown upon armed foreign ships coming in, if you make the armaments light enough that the ports don't care, you are going to be out manned and out gunned by the pirates anyways, also pirates do not usually kill the crew, but if a particular shipping company got a reputation for arming their crews pirates would probably at the very least treat them more harshly when captured, or execute them just to be safe.

    i don't know when the last time YOU ran a java app, but the future has fixed java, and not just by throwing more cycles at it, automated optimizers have improved performance as well. Personally i do not like writing java, but there is no problem with java applications except problems introduced by bad design of the individual application as java can execute very efficiently now, and you can run the same java app in more places with less tweaking than you can with c++

    "prefix" contains an HTML page that looks like your bank page, and asks for your bank password, and your browser "confirms" that you really are at your bank's website.

    it seems stupid but it can improve security, if you put a typo in with a google search it will probably get corrected, if you have a typo with a domain you could end up on a squatter site with a fake login page

    lesson plans are generally not produced at school, typically they are created off the clock at home.

    they aren't charging the students, they are selling plans to other teachers. so that less experienced teachers can free up time and buy a plan for something they are having a tough time coming up with good ideas for.

    this marketplace should be very good for both new teachers needing ideas and experienced teachers with the skills to put together great lessons.

    because google is not into childish games of retaliation and threats. if news corp puts out a robots.txt google will honor it, if they get a court order google will honor that too, public whining just gets sent to /dev/null
