Not exactly. For example, there were these sites, where you could put your spare invites, up for grabs to anyone who was waiting in line. I for one, sent out hundreds of invites. Did I know those people? No way.

Not necessarily. Having the best security experts does not mean that they are also going to be hired as consultants for the stock exchange. Such juicy positions usually go to those having the best connections, not the best expertise.

Good for them. Other publisher are not so polite. With zinio.com, for example, if you subscribe to a magazine, you can't read it on any other computer (unless you download it again, and the limit is 3), you can't print more than 2 pages a time, etc. It might still be convenient for some, but in my opinion, when it comes to books or magazines, stay away from digital. Get the paper.

  5. Not ridiculous on When Would You Accept DRM? · · Score: 1

...but people will always find ways to circumvent protection. From things as easy as burning songs to CD-s and the grabbing them back, to cracking encryption etc. Companies selling DRM-ed material may lose in the end more than they earn.

I also used that, last year, after looking really hard, and it worked just fine with a 2.4 kernel. However, after upgrading to 2.6, I couldn't convince it to run anymore. I gave up after a few tries.

Sorry, I missed that. This is hilarious, $500 for a Linux install.

The software win-modems on the Kiwi, Raven, Toucan, SilverComet, and Rhino series systems are fully supported in Linux with win-modem drivers.
They just forgot to add that there is no free Linux driver for software win-modems with Conexant chipsets. The best I could find was at http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/, with a free version limited to 14.4 kbps. Add $14.95 to the price, if you want your modem to work.

EmperorLinux (based on Fedora 3), Slackware, Red Hat Professional, Mandrake, Suse, Debian....they offer quite a good choice. Especially as most of these come for $0. Perhaps cusotmers will be more attracted to this notebook, when they see they don't have to pay extra $$$ for an operating system.

  10. New champion on Chess Master Kasparov To Retire · · Score: 5, Interesting

With his retirement, he's delivered the final blow to the unification plan. The only way a new champion would've gotten credibility was by defeating Kasparov. Now that he's out, I'm sure there's going to be another mess around the championship cycle. But it's understandable he got fed up with FIDE, and called it quits.
Anyway, he ended his career with a bang, winning in Linares. Too bad it's over, I'm sure he could've had a much longer career than Korchnoi.
I just wonder, who the candidates for WCH are now...Anand, Kramnik, Leko? Topalov sure want his share now, that he's tied with Kasparov at Linares.

  11. Sounds exciting... on Part 2 of Ruby on Rails Tutorial Online · · Score: 4, Interesting

"A Rails web application can run under virtually any web server"
Now that really made me curious. Is that really true, tried, and tested? If so, we need another bunch of tutorials about how to use Rails under Tomcat, Apache, etc. There is no way this framework will replace existing Java frameworks, but using it for prototyping is promising.

Ok, suppose something like that takes effect in 2017. Then, they'll have to deal with another issue. What IS a computer? With so many smart gadgets around, that won't be an easy question to answer. Even your fridge or microwave will be a computer by then! It'll have a microprocessor, memory, network connection, display...so, will they tax everything starting with your wristwatch and ending with your PDA?

Not sure how things are in the UK, but here in Eastern Europe, BBC is a synonym for objective, independent, realistic and incisive news reports. Haven't heard of anybody disliking it. FM radio stations that re-broadcast BBC programmes are bound to gain more listeners, just because of that.

I don't think articles such as this one will bring anything new to those who are in the business of credit card stealing. But it should serve as an eye-opener and for raising awareness for the average card user. Being a little more careful with that card should help a lot, I guess. Besides, I let the bank use my money for a reason, right? They should take the risk on themselves...

It's interesting that Google, with a search engine mainly written in Pyton, does not offer examples in Python for their API, as Yahoo does. Just Java and .NET. Yahoo on the other side doesn't have .NET programming examples...however, it rides on the popularity of the other languages. Is Yahoo at war with Microsoft for censoring .NET?
