They may be including informal design and algorithm meetings in their list. You know, the ones that you usually start by yelling over the cubical wall or out into the hallway which end up on a whiteboard somewhere with a small group.
This is just a proof of concept test. In 2 to 3 years the network should be about 600 sq km.
Toronto Hydro is deploying the network so they can use it for meter reading. The fact that other municipal services and retail uses are available is a bonus.

It's a perceived trait only. Time within the CPU in the server stops every 1/5th of a second for a duration lasting 4/5ths of a second. A 20% quota represents the full calculating capacity of the machine.
If you've watched a beginner with no computer experience, you will quickly find that requirng them to plug things into it is a challenge in itself.
It is possible for somebody knowledgeable to setup a BSD, and presumably Linux, based computer to kick off various programs when a USB device is attached and stop the program when the device is detached (usbd.conf). Watching for the lid opening on a scanner would require something special.
And this caters to less than 1% of the PC gamer market? Exactly. The triple cheeseburger at your local burger joint is the same way and exists for the exact same reason.
If a $1200 product is available, people can feel good about the money they saved by purchasing the $600 product and laugh at the people wasting their money on the bigger item.
If the $600 product is the top of the line then less people will buy it, they'll get the $300 item instead.
From a mechanics standpoint, that's just frightening. When you think about the friction and wear this will cause on the nanometer thin films on a disk platter, the outlook it isn't all that good. We have plenty of technologies that use a temporary low friction surface that is replaced on the fly, and I don't see any reason why harddisks should be different.
Figure out a way of adding a thin film of oil to the platter and you can deal with the wear and tear pretty easily.
I just got an external 500 gig from newegg. Price? 230 real dollars. $230 * 4 (redundancy to prevent data loss) = ~$1000 for 1TB.
If you don't mind losing your data then this product is not for you. We can also ignore the performance difference between 4 individual USB drives and a single network attached device.
Smart High-Rise Construction on an Impossible Schedule
Done regularly actually. The big difference is that the impossible schedule dramatically increases costs (heating in winter for year-round construction, running three crews in shifts for 24/7 construction), etc.
For some reason "Impossible Schedule" in software development means cutting corners instead of increasing manpower.
If everyone on the planet only worked 20 hours a week, and relied on technology and handouts for food and clothing, there would be no technology, no clothes and no food.
What makes you think that? It is pretty easy to demonstrate that a large portion of North Americans do that now. The other 20+ hours per week is usually sunk into entertainment and comfort rather than necessities.

6km^2 isn't too bad for a proof of concept installation.
Once tested and debugged it will be deployed over about 600km^2.
and what type of people are you installing?
I think it's like Bob, except you get a whole staff of idiots instead of just one idiot.
Does anybody outside of Microsoft actually care about Vista? WinXP is fairly stable
You're today's latest and greatest, so what makes you think that you won't run Vista when the time comes?
Win2k was also fairly stable and ran everything at the time, yet you went to XP. You will care about Vista for the same reasons that you run XP today.

Then again, there are people that still try to go whale watching in Lake Michigan.
I find whale watching in Lake Ontario to be very relaxing.
I wasn't around for that one but I did get to celebrate 12:34:56 August 7th, 1990.
I do day before month. Reverse those as you see fit.

It will be sold with a free prying bar and some barrow-lube to help people remove themselves from the scooter when they get to their couch.
Screw that. I'm not buying a scooter and a couch. Just park the scooter up infront of the TV.
No.. but 1 lot per bushel does tell you the density of the fruit being thrown away.
Life is like a friendly golf game, the baby takes a mulligan. It doesn't become competitive until the about the mid-way point.
Um, $230 * 3 (RAID5) = $690 for 1TB.
They were USB drives. USB is pretty easy to unplug thus making RAID5 very fragile.
Best use either RAID6 (double parity) -- minimum of 4 disks.

It's called SCHOOL.
Actually, now it's SKULE.
To clarify, sales of this nature are usually qualified with "up to" -- not exactly.
Just to nitpick, but lowering from $600 to $500 is 16.7% off.
That's what I said. 20% off. You've obviously never worked in retail. Percentages advertised are approximations only -- sticker price is what counts.
I am not sure how continuing to leak information about the high cost of the system is going to help Sony.
If everybody thinks it will be $600 then you can put it out at $500 (still most expensive) and call it 20% off.
Works for clothing stores (200% markup, 25% off sale moves product pretty quickly).

Of course, as always, the porn industry online is ahead of the curve.
There are few industries with as many curves...
