  1. Re:Design Of Everyday Things on Advice for Developers: Make Common Usage Easy · · Score: 1

Ever encountered a glass door (shopping malls are bad at this) with a bar that goes all the way across it, mirrored on the other side? Do you push, or pull? On the left or on the right?

I was at a mall with a door like this and started to get a lineup behind me because I couldn't figure out how to open the damn thing.

Tried pushing on the left, right, pulling left and right. Looking for something to turn.. Nothing.

Eventually figured out it was a skinny automated sliding door with a broken sensor -- which I had watched slide open and walked through many times before when it was functional. The fact that it didn't automatically open put me completely off guard.

Personally, I would never use one of these things. If you use your tools properly, and avoid running 'bad' wood through your tools, you will never have a problem. Avoid distractions, pay attention, and use push sticks.

Since normal people will never trigger the device, they will, of course, never need to replace the device either.

But it sounds like a great system for the one time the dog manages sneak in and it trips you. Or for schools where a kid, every few years, seems to manage to injure themselves.

Any guesses as to how big the lawsuit would have been in the US against the bar for faulty equipment? And this guy was happy because he didn't have to pay to fix the machine.

Fujitsu and Software Research Associates both fund PostgreSQL development in Japan and would make good partners for HP for a venture of this type -- but many of the knowedgable callcentre workers do not speak English (SRA). Fujitsu is making some inhouse modifications in the storage manager, it seems based on their questions, which would prevent an our of the box bundle.

Besides, (conjecturing) I'm wondering that Fujitsu doesn't want to put out a complete DataWarehousing system. They have the SANs, servers and mangement expertise and have been funding "Enterprise" level features (looking forward to PostgreSQL 7.5/7.6 yet?)
