why do people think a consumer level PC needs 1Gb of RAM??? I have had both PCs and Macs and only ever had 512MB of RAM and been able to do everything I wanted quite comfortably - video editing, mp3 encoding, Avi - mpg encoding, cd/dvd burning etc etc? We have SQL servers at work with 640Mb that serve out 100 concurrent users so I am thinking 512Mb is enough for 1 user at home. Just because RAM is as cheap as chips doesn't mean you need to max the box out all the time!
The potential audience for this product is everyone on the planet!!!!
Think about it, for this low price you are getting a VERY capable system that will appeal to more or less everyone except the true hardcore PC gamers. Even huge Geeks who have SGI superclusters as their main workstation can get one of these as a second computer. They can be used as a media centre, as a web surfing appliance, a normal desktop for mum/grandma or dad/grandad, as a headless linux server, probably some bright spark will come up with an easy to use cluster solution soon. Even those hardcore gamers can use one to do their surfing on and not compromise their XP rig with all the malware IE surfing can bring down on them. How many times have you heard someone say 'Yeah I would buy a mac but only if they come down in price!' Now they have and Apple are in for some VERY exciting times.
Although Outlook is primarily a mail client it does have some 'nice' groupware abilities that businesses like. E.g. group calendaring and tasks and also shared contacts. Plus outlook forms can be very handy w.r.t. helpdesk systems, time sheets, etc etc.
Although of course with it being Microsoft it crashes more often than Holly Hunterin that Cronenberg movie.
We certainly need to get away from fossil fuels, they just lead to global warming and then before you know it people are making films about it and then it happens for real... errrmmmm.....
I'll be moving along now to the somewhere around the equator I think!
errrm, why do you think they are killing off HP-UX?? I have just been to a seminar on the self same OS and their roadmap goes out to 2012 for just 11i V1, and that is not even taking into account V2 and the planned V3!!
As an aside to this, yes,/. is US centric but it is getting less so I think, esp. as most (55%ish acording to a recent poll) readers either do or would like to live outside the USA!! Quelle Surprise
yup, it doesn't matter what you hit those old harddisks with, it is HOW you hit them that is important!!
We used to use the edge of the desk the PC sat on, worked a treat for 2/3 years on IBM model 55s!

well said that man, Ontrack are a superb company IMO. They are quick, professional and get about a 95% recovery rate (from my own experience with them)
More saliently perhaps, they make their money from corporates who often NEED the data back and need it quick. So they have no qualms at all helping out the consumer, often for free/low fee as it makes them look better and therefore gives them more of the bigger paying corporate accounts.
That is a good point, but for farks sake lets try it and see what happens!
We KNOW IE is a load of monkey's bollocks (trying to get away from the donkey line of thought:))
Let's see what firefox can do under real world conditions, it can't be any worse that what we have now (globally speaking that is)
Sorry but the WOPR had different scenarios it could act out, one of which was definitely chemical warfare and there were many others. it is just that broderick had to go for the big money and play global thermo-nuclear war.
In a few years time the iPod will simply be remembered as one of the first HD based music playback devices - not the cheapest, largest or whatever.
Your Trolling, right? Anyhoo I'll rise to the bait. The ipod is now as synonymous with HD audio player as the Sony Walkman was with Mobile Cassette player. It has had a huge impact on today's audio market, as can be seen from all these {pale} imitations. People even right articles about it's impact on society, weird as that seems.
eerrmmm, you can get DVD isos for BOTH PC and XBOX you know. or so I am told at any rate, I mean p2p what? emule? what is that? some kind of teledildonic beast toy? I don't know what you are talking about officer I was in Kansas at the time!
Skeletonliar is bang on the money with this. I work with PCs all day and when I come home to my Imac I sometimes forget that it should be apple + C (or whatever) and hit ctrl + C, I get a beep and think 'damn stupid Windows, I am on a good computer now, press apple instead - doofus') I then hit apple +C and away I go. All this takes about half a second so it is no biggy.
The benefit of a mac is that for pretty much all things it works better than windows (for me anyway), I do the regular things most people want to do, listen to mp3s, surf the web, edit digital stills and video and for my money the mac does it well and easily, I don't have to frig about with arcane device drivers, weird install routines and damn viruses, it is 'easy' to use. OK, it is somewhat lacking on the games front but then that is what a console is for, again these things 'just work' and after piss^H^H^H^Hmessing about with PCs all day, I don't WANT the hassle that comes with them at home.
The idea of sending a person to prison is to give him an education, show him where he was wrong and make him an usefull contribution to society. Your view is plainly inhuman and wrong.
Shame that this so rarely happens and that the BEST education felons get are the tools/knowledge to do more crime!
What is wrong with shutting down at night is the ENORMOUS amount of time Windows takes to boot up!!!!
Leave the PC on but set power saving to something sensible, that way you can save money on electricity and be up and running in the morning without the obligatory 5 min wait!
Plus, Steve Jobs is a prick...
no, no, no... it's pronounced Bill Gates

£69 for the half Gig and £99 for the gig, pretty reasonable really! (all prices include VAT)
but how many bushels/hogshead is that??
except Duron sounds like it should be a form of condom!
Turion - A thick fleshy young shoot or sucker
oooh errr missus, titter yea not, NO, go on, really.
I know sex sells but isn't this a bit OTT?
I am at this very minute using outlook 2000 on an exch 2003 server, as are about 1000 other people, so yes it is possible, easy even.

How can you make that determination when neither has been accomplished?
What do you call OS X then?
Actually, there is FAR too much debate on this subject, it is FUNNY, who gives a crap if it is legal or not!!!
