Do you have NOTHING better to do than to waste/.'s bandwidth? Seriously, even if anyone in their right mind agreed with you, do you really think that anyone gives a shit about your opinions? Do you think anyone cares about you think?
We don't.
And for the record, I'm a lesbian. And I laughed last time I got a derogatory comment. It was funny!
Both of those are also options here... the specific program I described was in conjunction with a cellphone company that gave a free ticket to x theater chain every week. They'd have used the barcode thing, I think, but there are some users who don't have MMS ready cells, and a text-based code is pretty simple. Truth is, it takes just about as long to type in the ticket number as it does for me to say "Two for Narnia"... this way I do it on the phone before I get there and just show it when I arrive and the ticket prints out. It's just one of many options for ordering tickets.
In israel we get a printed ticket at the gate, as reciept. It's identical to any other ticket. It's then torn off like a regular as you go in, so you have your seating info.
Dang... we've been using that in israel for movies for years. Just a number in text message, though, no barcode. They type it in and check that the credit card you have with you matches the card that that ticket number is registered under and you're in.
the planetary society is actually a quite financially transparent organisation which is totally publically run. I agree - there should be more financial details of this upcoming project, but I suspect they put up a big round number because they don't yet KNOW how much it'll cost (if you don't know the actual condition of the tapes you can't know how much it'll cost to access the data on them, if that's even possible). They may have used that number as a rough estimate. in the past they've done stuff like this, later adding on full financial details (once they actually knew).
Well, we're there now. I was watching the raw feed from mission control when the first pics came in, so I've seen all those pics that haven't been, and lemme tell you, this is incredible stuff. The rover is looking for signs of transsexual life on mars, and will egress from the lander in days, not hours. The regular estimate is 9 days. Beautiful. It should live for overe 90 days, although it was designed to last 3 months. Most NASA probes that start their missions (ones with no definite end, like Voyager) last far beyond the expected lifespan. The pathfinder LANDER died on day 37, while the rover could still be alive, as the lander was its relay. It was all meant to last 30 days.
The rover is the size of a desk, unlike the tiny sojourner rover. Remember all those 'boulders' you saw in 1997? they were often the size of a golfball or a bit larger, and looked huge due to the camera being very near the ground. Not this time. This rover includes a 'mast', which carries a pair of stereoscopic cameras at a hight of just over four feet (!), which is GREAT for geologists. Remember, these rovers are geologists, not biologists. Sometime in the future, followup missions will carry out biological experiments where the scientists get indications there's a good chance of finding life.
A future (don't hold your breath) rover will be nuclear powered, and thus will be able to last ALOT longer (maybe even years) performing experiments at dozens or even hundreds of sites.
This rover can move at a rate of about 100 meters a day. The last rover, Sojourner, traveled about 100 meters in its entire lifetime.
Live NASA feed:
http://realserver1.jpl.nasa.gov:8080/ramgen/encode r/live.rm - higher quality transmission
http://www.nasa.gov/ram/35037main_portal.ram - busier mirror, so usually lower bandwidth
I've seen speeds up to 350kbit, though since the landing the best I can get is 220kbit off the first link and 85-128kbit off the second link.
Aerogel has existed since the 1930's. Unmanned spaceflight, however, give it its first REALLY useful application, and it has been used many times since then.
All those pics were for navigation, and were a bonus (might as well use the camera if it's there). The craft is set to release a capsule in ~2 years which will land in utah, containing actuall comet dust. beat that!
Anyway, hon, go to www.planetary.org/radio/ if this stuff interests you. listen in order, instead of 'cool titles first'. Enjoy, and post back about how much you love it to make me happy!
which we erased from tssupport... ;)
(whoever you are)
What do you mean, I lack friends? Just look at my MySpace friends list!
That was haaaardly obligatory as there were no "extra intelligent" things ;)

No. it was mentioned here (in a VERY trollish attacking comment), here, and here. Just letting you know ;)
*clap clap clap* Seriously... bravo!
OOH! OOH! Let's, like, send a rocket to the SUN!
DBT != ECT
You can make a barcode out of any number of digits.

I originally read that as "Monsters Back "Cookies Are Good For You" Campaign", as in the cookie monster. hah.
joke for my lesbian and TS friends, forgot to edit it out for /.
ah well, I'm outed. I'm gay. I'm here, I'm queer, get used to it.
