I agree. Not neccessarily that Windows is the best quality software available, but that you should buy what is best suited to get the job done. And in many times, Linux is NOT the answer. Looking at the probable average computer experience of a civil servant workforce, something like Linux is probably above their heads.
HOWEVER, if someone were to sit down and write a specific application (CivilServant 2000) for that community, and distribute it as an application under linux, that takes into account the userbase, then it might be useful. Especially one that turned a linux desktop into a CivilServant terminal, like those computerized cash registers you see.
Read Age of Spirtual Machines, by Kurzweil. After reading this book and looking at his facts and figures, I believe sincerly that we'll see simulated sentient software in the next 10-20 years.
Of course, we've all got to agree on what sentient is.... Which he also makes a good point about in the book.

Then you have another percentage who might read/. every day, post about how f'ed up the world is, get pissed off every time they think their rights are affected, but NEVER ACT ON IT.

I'm really confused about this whole "blacklash on slashdot" recently. People complaining that news items don't fit THEIR ideals for "news for nerds" or that Slashdot occasionally posts something that is wrong.
First off, we "Nerds" are a pretty diverse group. Therefore your idea of "news" may not be the same as my idea of "news." If you are that pissed off about it, then DON'T READ THE TOPIC, let alone reply to it. It always amazes me how out of the way people go to make themselves and others around them miserable.
Second, tell me if I'm wrong, but Slashdot is NOT an associated press. They produce news items based on submitted postings and interesting tidbits that they find. Of course, I'm being a hypocrite just by posting this, but I gotta vent my frustrations that have been building up for the past month. Sorry.
This is cool and all, but this is another area of technology that might suffer the "build it first, and consider the effects later."
I mean, this has been a central theme in many movies, like Terminator and the Matrix, where AI takes over and starts building it's own Legion of Doom.
Now everyone will say, but they aren't sophisticated robots. They don't tote heavy caliber guns around and aren't built to replace humans. But things like this sneak up on us. You think you're building some cute little Pokemon, and the next thing you know you're stuck in a concentration camp.
I would propose that researchers in the fields of AI take great pains to protect the world from their research, should any great "spark" happen to transform some mild mannered Weather predictor system into a global war beast. AIs should be developed in restrained environments that aren't connected to the outside world networks. AIs should conform strictly to the Three Laws of Robotics, as proposed by the late Dr. Asimov. Data should be fed in via proxy systems that don't allow the AI to get at it on its own. AIs should DEFINITELY not be hooked up to any major automated manufacturing equipment, no matter how benign, unless they are self contained behind strict security.
This could have some amazing uses, such as dropping off an AI on a deserted planet with a few gazillion nanobots to perform large scale terraforming, and so on, but make sure they don't terraform us if one of them happens to get smart and escape.

This'll piss a lot of SW fans off, but I was very disappointed with Ep1 and don't feel that Lucas is a good director at all. He's lost his art of story-telling and can't direct worth a piss. (not compared to Spielberg anyway)
Star Wars ep4,5,6 are legends because they were brand new ideas when they came out, and they have aged in our memories like fine wines. As we reported earlier today, Wombat Games, developers of the massively-multiplayer online game Dark Zion, have closed their doors. I received the following response from Rick Delashmit, one of the founders who formerly worked on UO and UO: 2nd Age, to my email dated July 31st:
Hi Tina,
Sorry about the delay getting back to you, but I wanted to wait until we had our official announcement up. Essentially what happened is that we'd exhausted the list of traditional publishers for the game, and everyone is either only interested in completed games, or is unwilling to take the risk of a game with so many unproven design elements (or in other words, they want clones of already successful games). We were getting tired of doing contract work to support the company through the development of the game, especially given that it would apparantly have to continue until the game was nearly completed based on what publishers were looking for, so we decided to close up shop. Most of us at least will be trying to stay in the online game industry and hopefully we can influence other games to move in the same directions we were headed, if not quite as quickly.

I don't think gaming is dead because the people aren't buying, I think gaming is dead because the publishers are killing it. Game publishers are notorious for "sticking" with safe concepts and ultimately flogging them to death. As a result they don't give many game shops a chance with genre-creating games, thus stagnating the market and making people tired of playing "just another Doom Clone on graphics crack."
Think about it. Would "The Sims" have been published if Will Wright hadn't already had a name for himself? (and the money and contacts to make it happen?) No. His ideas would have been discarded because they don't contain the words "Frag" or "300 giga-polygons a nanosecond".
This is a real threat to the gaming industry, and a hotly debated topic in the development circles. Hopefully with GarageGames and their ilk, we'll start seeing a lot more new concepts, some good, some bad, from the teeming masses of under appreciated indy studios.
