  1. Wow on Act Like A Real Star Trek Captain: Talk · · Score: 1

If anyone has not seen the documentary, "Trekkies". You must see it. It is amazing. The people, the culture of trekkies is astounding. I mean, I was laughing the whole way through the documentary, although I still respect Trekkies. But..learning the Klingon language? I guess it's no different than learning French or Spanish anymore, eh?

  2. Re:FreeBSD? on The Slashdot DDoS: What Happened? · · Score: 1

FreeBSD is ten times more secure than Linux...and the best part is the cute Daemon(probably why they chose it over Linux...the daemon..)!

  3. Subject on Pioneer Introduces 1st DVD Recorder (In Japan) · · Score: 2

For $30 a disc, there's no point for most consumers to buy, since most people would just want to copy their friend's collection of Kubrick films. It would just be cheaper to buy them, and you'd get the cool case.

If you are doing DV editing or other personal stuff and need storage(4.7 gigs) for your movies , this is good news. Although, this is not a PC ROM, so I guess you couldnt burn from your PC.

    Can anyone else enlighten us?

  4. No arguement on Microsoft vs. Slashdot Update · · Score: 1

There's not alot Microsoft can do to make you guys remove "comments" from other people. Comments are just a way of communication. If people were talking about Kerberos in a cafe, Microsoft wouldnt ask them to be quiet(or would they? hehe). The only difference is that these conversations are logged so people can still read them. If microsoft won, and slashdot removed the comments, that would be going against the freedom to speak and think. I do not understand how they can do this, since slashdot is not responsible for any of the readers' actions.

  5. MPEG4 on Cable Industry backs Mpeg-4 for Streaming Video · · Score: 3

I also came across the MPEG4, Web3D collaboration 'movement'. Check it out here

For all of you who are confused about MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group), check here .

  6. Somewhat.. on Company Claims To Have Workable Draft of Human Genome · · Score: 1

This is somewhat old news...I remember my Biology teacher talking to us about this. Evidently, the company also wants to patent the genome sequence (raises lots of arguments...I mean how can you patent genes?). Popular Science magazine had a wee article on this i think last month.

  7. NetPD, napster, metallica on NetPD, Metallica's Mysterious Tracker · · Score: 1

I do not understand what the good in Lars Ulrich delivering over 335,000 'usernames' to Napster's office for banning. If the users are banned, they'll re signup. It's not like they can IP ban alot of the users also, for most of them come from ISP's like AOL, or other dialup services where your IP is not static. Metallica should think about things first....and has anyone ever noticed how cheesy they look in all their pictures at Metallica.com?

  11. Re:this isn't so different than parts of IRC on Dr. Dre Might Sue Napster Users? · · Score: 1

Hey! It's all computers faults! Sue the computers!

  12. Progress on Dr. Dre Might Sue Napster Users? · · Score: 1

Sueing users directly will not solve any problem. A few users might be sued, but there will still be 100 more users ripping cd's and encoding them.

If technology progresses it is up to the Music Industry to answer. It is up to them to find a solution. However, it is a difficult situation. The film industry is fine. They rely on theaters for all their profit. Video copying is age old, and does not affect their industry..much.

Still, my point stands. If technology progresses, it is up to the music industry to answer, not sue; for progress never dies.

  13. The System for BeOS? on Enigma Machine Stolen · · Score: 1

All you BeOS junkies with nice systems: What's a great system to run BeOS on? what kind of processor/vid card/sound card/do you use? I've been wanting to set up a box in my room for quite a while now. Im just now getting around to it. I think....but if you could help me on where to buy from, that'd be much appreciated.

    Letter to WAVE:

Rediculous. It's the goddamn programs like this that fuck up America. Let's "rat" on kids for being depressed, or saying stupid emotional crap when they're down, or high. Has anyone ever thought that maybe the American school system sucks. Has anyone ever thought that maybe school should be re-thought. We're schooling kids on a system that was institutionalized in 1776 [well...way before then]. Bleh.

You're rewarding kids for telling on their friends, classmates they dont know. Have you thought about how many prank calls you might get? Probably, about %50 will be phony calls from kids who think this is rediculous. Well...I'm tired now, need to go to sleep. Then I can get up and go to school! Hooray! I'll be sure to watch out for any sad people, or for any geeks who surf the net and who think. I'll be sure to give you guys a call so you can....do what about it? People will call....So what.....the WAVE team will come rescue the school? WTF?
