Is your cut hair a member of your mother's species? My appendix was taken out when I was 12. If it were tested today, it would be "human" but not "a human". You appear to be deliberately swapping the two to make a point, at least by the context of your leading question.
Also, TFA makes it clear that the person charged didn't donate, or perform any transaction of any kind. He just entered his details so he could, and decided not to, but was charged for about $400 of campaign merchandise.
This was simple theft, though since it was done by a politician/business, it's called an "error" and nothing will come of it, so long as the money is returned in a timely fashion.
If a bomb scare is called in, even if they "know" it's fake, they have to evacuate and wait until the building is cleared by the bomb squad (or local equivalent). If they "discover" a bomb that's not called in, they have discretion. So the principal calling in his own bomb didn't shut the school down, but if a kid called it in , the school would be shut down.
I've done it as well, but it seems that so many are talking up his technical prowess, and the postings on slashdot indicate he just took the case off a regular alarm clock and moved it to a pencil case (mostly). I've made a clock with a setup you describe. But when I did it, it was a school assignment, so nobody would have thought it odd. But for NASA and MIT to congratulate him on his achievement if it were just taking the case off a clock, it seems silly. But nearly everyone here is posting that's what he did. Though the news reports all indicate he "built" it. I mentioned it more because I was interested in where the truth sat between the two.
The part where the school claims they thought it was a bomb, so they left the bomb in his possession while they waited for the cops, and didn't evacuate the school? The side where the police claim it was a bomb, so they didn't call the bomb squad?
When one side is obviously full of lies, waiting for them to refine their lies to something that's not explicitly contradictory isn't "fair", it's stupid.
Either is a precursor step for one of the common bomb triggers. But if that were the standard, every student in the school with a phone (probably more than half) should be in jail with him.
Irving is a "small town" that's a large suburb in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation. It's bigger than Pasadena, and other large suburbs of large cities people have heard of.
Clearly he didn't 'invent' the clock - but I don't think anyone really thought he did.
There's a difference between taking apart a clock (As I've seen posted here) and making a clock from scratch (well, Radio Shack parts). The media reports indicate the latter, the comments here indicate the former. That's the distinction that seems to be the "technical" issue for what his personal capabilities actually are.
One of the reports I say indicated the cop who said that had never seen Ahmed before. So how did he know who it was going to be, if he never met him? Is the entire department briefed on "that Mooslim kid"?
Every time he was asked about it, he plainly explained it was a clock.
Also, the school indicated they knew it wasn't a bomb, but thought he built it to look like a bomb. They thought he was going to call in a bomb scare later.
The money has to come from somewhere. Currently a 1% tax on the top 1% would pay for a sizeable UBI. But this isn't class warfare. And if you tax the 1%, their income will disappear. There are currently trillions of dollars made by US companies that is "hidden" (legally) offshore to avoid taxes. Tax the 1% and the same will happen for private individuals, not just the bigger corporations.
For instance, consider taxi drivers, regional and long haul truckers - what happens when they get replaced by self-driving robots? It's certainly a hell of a lot more efficient, but do you think that's going to create new jobs?
Yes, that will create new jobs. As you increase wages with productivity, the fewer workers left trucking will be paid more. This will result in trickle up (which, unlike trickle down, has been proven to work in reality). The drivers will have more disposable income, and will spend more of it on, for discussion, say video games. So not directly, but a loss of jobs at the trucking firm, while they are improving productivity, will result in a net increase of jobs. Even if those jobs can't be seen as a 1:1 with the trucking jobs lost, and it's unlikely that a trucker would re-skill to be a video game programer/artist.
We do have a serious problem in that from about the 70s/80s onward, the gains in productivity have become increasingly decoupled from wages. All the benefits are going to the rich, especially the seriously rich.
That was the problem that broke the system. Someone said "any joe can do that job, so we'll pay it at an unskilled rate, even though that one job is worth $1,000,000 to the company". And with the lack of wage transparency and organized workers, the decoupling was slow and natural, until the point where it collapsed the US economy
"Maybe terms like "PASSING LANE" and "ACCELERATION LANE" aren't really so confusing after all..."
The current drivers call the passing lanes (yes, lane*s*, as the outside lane is the only non-passing lane on a multi-lane highway) "fast lanes" and set their cruise control at [limit-4] to allow for speedometer inaccuracies. The older people may not follow the rules well, but they at least bothered to learn the rules at least once. The kids today call the "passing" lane the "fast" lane and declare them fast, and everyone else too slow or too fast.
If you can't point to a car that you are passing, you shouldn't be in a passing lane. If you are, you should lose your license. And no, getting out of the outside lane because there's an entrance only 3 miles ahead, and you don't want to have to worry about changing lanes if someone's getting on doesn't count as passing someone.
How would a gag order help anything? The innocent person would simply tell the suspect that he got a gag order he can't talk about, wink wink. Then, without violating the gag order, the suspect would know 90% of what he needs to know to invalidate any reason for the gag order.
Gag orders have no useful purpose, unless issued on *everyone* between an arrest and trial (called "name suppression" everywhere outside the US). This common practice ensures "innocent until proven guilty" survives. After all, who doesn't think OJ did it? His name is forever stained with a crime he was acquitted of. That's not how the system is supposed to work. Even if some would argue that it was just in that case, what about all the others, rape suspects come to mind, where just the accusation causes actual loss to the accused.
For education, simply being able to use any random kiosk or tablet on the network to pick-up where one left-off instead of being tied to a specific device is already a good reason.
Yeah, we had that in the '80s. The network was called "sneakernet" and any computer would pick up where you left off, you just had to save and take your floppy with you. A USB stick per student (All of $5 for a 4GB at overpriced stores) and you have all that you've asked for, without any network.
Computers do what they are programmed/allowed to do. When I started using computers, there was no Internet. None of the computers in school were connected to anything, other than one modem on the teacher's desk in high school, until I got to college, and they were all connected all the time. There's no reason they have to be connected 100% of the time.
. Its just not politically correct to say so because parent involvement lines up so closely with racial lines. Not exact, but close enough.
Then you notice that hours worked to provide food for the children lines up on racial lines as well. The parents aren't involved. They are out working their second job so their children can eat. If you can solve poverty, you solve 90% of the "race issue" in the US, other than the bigots who assert it's about the lazy race, and not economics.
The only times I've seen people happy with plotters in-house is oil exploration companies. I don't know what GIS they use, but it's apparently built for plotters.
Yes, the standard bloatware that nearly everyone pushes these days for everything is the problem. Most on Slashdot wouldn't have an issue. They throw out the install disk and download the latest drivers. That avoids the problem that the driver disk comes with an undesirable program.
Trump says the same thing about Mexicans. By someone's definition, *everyone*, including you, fits in some category that's criminal and murderous. Sort of makes the whole broad generalization thing useless, don't you think?
Like the Crusades, and don't forget the KKK was a Christian organization. How about the family planning clinic bombings? Christians hating Christians, and killing each other, like in Ireland?
Yes, tiny, yet more than everyone else combined. It is only "tiny" if you start the history of the planet in 2000, with an eye on Muslim hate.
If that combination wins, there is no safe distance.
You left out "hopeless poverty" in your list of causes. Seems that you list symptoms as causes. Try thinking for yourself next time.
Is your cut hair a member of your mother's species? My appendix was taken out when I was 12. If it were tested today, it would be "human" but not "a human". You appear to be deliberately swapping the two to make a point, at least by the context of your leading question.
At birth, or when viable, depending on the circumstances. Viable meaning capable of unassisted survival outside the womb.
Though you are not a full human until 18, when "human rights" are fully conferred, depending on location and nationality.
Trump/Palin 2016!
Could, not would.

Yet is proves that Ahmed doesn't follow directions, and was looking for a reaction. Why would he keep showing it to people once warned not to?
Irving is a "small town" that's a large suburb in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation. It's bigger than Pasadena, and other large suburbs of large cities people have heard of.
