Funny. You seriously just described perfectly what the CLR of.net and mono is all about.
Source is compiled down to a middle thing which can be executed fast but optimized from the jitter which knows everything about the machine it currently runs on and how the program is run. Jitting is not quite there yet but looking at the progress the C/C++ compiler made in the past decade you will have it soon.
Actually i switched from MythTV to media center edition. Mainly because of the amazing UI of MCE ( eye candy on a TV is what its all about ) and the really really bad picture quality of the NVIDIA x11 driver tv out. ( only one version could do overscan and this version was particularly unsharp )
I do miss a couple of features from Myth though, auto xviding of recorded shows rocked.
My recommendation is to install Zen-Card on the system.
Zen is a full featured e-commerce solution and is opensource and written in php. When you install it you can choose to have it populate a demo database which has quite a bit of stuff in it. (100s of products).
I don't think its the pinnacle of database engineering but if all you are looking for is mock data there you go.
You're missing the point. It is poor UI design. Really crappy UI design -- Windows (an other software) should never steal focus to ask you a question
I disagree. While it might be annoying its also valid. Sometimes a decission has to be made. Blinking in the background doesn't do that. Especially now where security on the desktop is a real concern. Do you never get any important documetns you have to look over handed to you in the office ? Do your coworker draw a number before speaking to you ? I think not.
Dialog boxes are there for a reason and they behave like they do for a reason.
Unfortuantly you are totally wrong about poor ui design.
When a unasked for popup comes up the first reaction of the average user is to get rid of it. There are statistics which proove that 75% of all users will hit enter to any dialog box without reading it in your average run the mill office.
Don't take this lightly. This is the very reason for most of the problems we have in the internet today. Norton antivirus used to default to "read anyways" when it detected a email virus.
This was realized by microsoft a while ago and now all dialog boxes default to the secure option instead of the least intrusive. Since windows only wants you to restart if it couldn't apply the patch to the machine during installation ( e.g. applications which were to be patched were running / files were in use ) it makes perfect sense to default to reboot. If there is a big exploit in IE it needs to be fixed as fast as possible. Who really tourns off their pc nowadays ? Even after receiving the patch you might run your unpatched ie for a week.
I think you are a bit confused. aspx means asp.net and thats purly serversided. You can't *rely heavily* on this, its a choice of system. And a damn good one right now if i might add this. People who used it will agree with me there. ( asp was crap )
You basically are saying there is no technical reason to use open source since it's always just trying to immitate the innovator.
Geese you need some help with your interpretation skills. Hes neither saying or implying that nor is the person hes quoting from saying or implying that.
Moreso he actually WROTE the first line of one of the projects mentoined (gnome) and the project in question (mono) so I think this counts as proof that he's not beliving that:)
As long as you either use GTK# ( download ), wxNet or console mode you won't even have to recompile it under mono on linux/MacOs/whatever. You will be able to just run it.
Indeed not even a pc connected to a TV can compare because the xbox has a HDTV compatible tv out and there are no affortable HDTV out pc gfx cards yet. ( none which aren't more expensive then the entire xbox anyways ).
Here another quote from the same site:
As things stands, the scope of functions offered by a modified XBox has little or no competition. Only a full-value mini PC can overshadow the Microsoft multi-talented capabilities, but the question of convenient remote control remains unanswered. Unfortunately, the XBox itself has to be taken to grips if you want to get the full range of functions from it. If you can stomach the loss of warranty cover, and have a few hours to configure it, $240 (260), including modifications, will buy you what is a nigh-perfect device for home use from a reseller.
And this particular article is a couple of months old now. In the meantime xbox media center was updated with amazing features and the xbox price dropped to 200$.
As a added boon the xbox runs the best games which are released nowadays ( sadly ).

You can skin it as long as you like it will still not be native and not look native.
You will not be able to get windows cleartype or X11 anti aliasing font smoothing in a swing app.
Sun needs to embrace SWT or make something better ( thats not hard ) but whatever they declare for standard has to honor the platforms native appearance, there is no other way.
P.S: yes i have seen beautiful swing apps, yet they look out of place.
There is a proposal for http based seeding. I think the author of the original shadow client fromed it and implemented it. So quite a few clients derivated from it should support it.
It basically has you install a php script in the same place as the full original file is. If there are no seeds available the tracker reveals this http seed to fast uploading clients. These seeds request the chunks which are not available in the torrent network using parameters to the php script and resume normal bittorrent operations.
I thought this proposal was amazing. Imagine a movie is released with 2-3 mirrors and those would be http bittorrent seeds instead of plain http servers, you would have the best of both worlds !

Well there is a compelete java vm which can run exclipse for mono. ( i know thats pretty hard to get the head around )
This is an awesome project. Its coded by one person and one person alone, yet it probably spots the single best userinterface of any application on the win32 platform. It also has some incredibly smart features like trackerless bittorrent downloads (it uses a gnutella message to look for other peers over gnutella network, decentralized bittorrent ! imagine that ! ).
I have been corresponding with the programmer a while ago, since i have written a GUI filesharing tool myself we exchanged post mortems. Very nice guy.
See I compleatly agree with you, but i also think that your argument is very Theoretical.
I just can't come up with a type of software which would trigger such a behaviour. Honestly there are two types of applications which still hit computers hard: Math problem solving tools and computer games.
Games are a whole topic in themselves. Well optimized code is a feature which can cause more sells, so optimized asm code will have a home here for a long time. Math is usually so complex that you need infrastructure for clustering anyways ( think seti ) here hand optimized asm code can save you years in calculating. All other software which has business with bytecode ( ie you wouldn't write with java,.net or python ) is better off being written in C for protablility then optimized ( obfuscated ? ) in asm.

Think about gentoo what you want, i think the parent is rather insightful than funny. This is preciecly the enviroment where gentoo comes in its own.
Sourceforge might mind ....
automatically ? can you provide a link ?

Easiest way to get the torrents is to google for them:
"Filetype:torrent Fahrenheit"
The storage engine for WinFS will come from the mssql team so thats hardly "slapped on top"
This is because the server was configured badly. Opera and Firefox do the right thing and assume binary. IE defaults to display.
To fix this the server owner has to set the correct mime mode for the document.
relys on aspx ?

# su - /boot /boot/vmlinux
# echo "bam!" > ~/bomb

Yea in this case your hdtv chip would be in the adapter, not on the gfx card.
This would be a way to get HDTV out though, you are right.

Interesting that an institute like this uses Zope / Plone for their web server.
