I knew it, and I'm waiting a few extra days before I buy the game, simply because I don't want that hassle.
Or better yet. did the right thing and bought the game in advance over steam
Buying over steam had many advantages:
You instantly got to play CS:S
You saved a buck or two in some cases
You money went to valve instead of Vivendi
You had HL2 preloaded on your harddrive (no cds)
You could start playing 10 minutes after the game was released
For me Steam was a huge success. Its just stupid to distribute digital data over physical mediums like CDS when there is a boardband internet connection available.
After purchasing steam stays incredibly useful. You will never have to search for your f$%^& cds and put them in your drive. If you want to play hl2 online in two years all you need to do is double click the game. You deleted the game ? NO PROBLEM. Steam downloads it for you. You are not up to date ? NO PROBLEM. steam updates you. You don't have the map / mod / whatever ? NO PROBLEM.
People need to get used to the idea of steam. yes it might have caused some problems but that was to be expected.
1) The president is elected by popular vote. Discarding valid votes for any reason is undemocratic and currently all votes past the one which is enough for 50% in a state are discarded. This is undemocratic.
2) Banks should be required to outfit ATMs with voting tools. Let people vote at their ATMs, everyone know where theirs is. Voting could be done up to a month prior and the actual election day should be a deadline instead of the only possibility.
I'm pretty sure a std::deque would be in order. Deque is a linked list of arrays with the same interface of a vector.
vector would be a bad choice because on resize it has to copy over the content of the entire old array into the new one, linked list is a bad choice because for each stored number you need another pointer to the next. Deque combines the both so that on resize it just creates a new array and links it to the old.
The way people compare EQ2 with WOW is flattering to EQ all by itself.
I can understand that many people don't realize blizzard for what it is. Blizzard is a game developers DREAM.
Everyone in the industry dreams of working for blizzard, they employ the best artists the best game designers and some of the best programmers. Next to id, valve, bungee and bioware they have the unique position of taking any amount of time they like for their games. Every single of their games so far already payed for its development in pre orders, publishers will not mess with this track record.
Blizzard South decided to make an MMO game and from day one It was clear that this game will be remarkable. What they delivered is not only a excellent game but it is also embarrasses the other contenders in this genre with its. There is no way that this game wouldn't have been on the shelf half a year ago if it would have come from any other developer, instead they kept it in beta till it fulfilled the "blizzard vision" of the perfect MMO.

I implement a simple irc bot in whatever language i test. Usually takes few hours and you can write it as top down script or as oop monster, up to you.
The good thing is that you can use this irc bot to test just about every aspect of the language later on. Its not a project which is just done and discarded. Possible enhancements are user recognition or even something fancy like cvs commit reporting.
For example when i decided to play with sqlite took the ruby version of the bot and added a funny quotes database.

Our brain is trained to do Z sorting by shadows. The sun has been around since we humans where outfitted with these modern brains of ours. If you ask someone who has only one eye of how they work out deph they will tell you it only works well during day light.
Shadows are the single best clue for which window is on top. Additionally they look great. Because there is no doubt which window is in the foreground we can do away with the stupid title bars which where supposed to do this by a color clue.
This means more net space for the window content among many other advantages.
but ie4 was lightyears ahead of netscape4 (fact, don't discuss) and this was the exact time when they passed netscape. I don't see them catch up to itunes in a while.
Whistler (canada, BC) is the ski resort of choice for microsoft. No surprise here its probably the best in the world. Their code names are almost always based on the Whistler region. XP was Whistler, Blackcomb (neightbour village) was their backoffice server and at the foot of the main whistler slope is the Longhorn bar.
Regardless, If the drive fails and you get your money back they didn't do any business. In fact with inflation they even lost money.
A warranty is basically a bet without you having to put in any ante. You can read it as "We bet your drive will work for the next 5 years or you get your money back!". They know their product best, so if they are that confident in it that is a good sign. If other manufacturers only bet on a year of lifetime you know whats up.
To me this would be a really strong point for a seagate HD. Not that I needed any more, all my recent drives have been Seagate barracuda drives because they are just plain the best drives around ( price, noise, speed ). I have seldomly seen such a superior product, especially if they slap a 5 year warranty on it.
10 GBps doesn't strike me as all that much. For example its still puny compared to the speed the data is beeing passed around on the main board.
At the current rate I would predict that our 100mbit switches/routers will be the bottle necks of our internet connections within the next 2-3 years. So an upgrade to 1 gbps switching gear / nics is forseeable but compared to the jump from isdn to broadband, IPv4 to IPv6 or 32 bit address space to 64 bit address space its rather a step forward then a new era.
Its definatly an awesome release. I'm thrilled by the native SOAP support. Hard to imagine what the OS crowd will do with a blockbuster feature like this generally available. SQLite will improve the xcopy deployment compatibilities of simpler apps and SimpleXML is the best xml API i have seen so far in any language. On the OOP front we get exceptions which will finally unmangle the error systems of most complex php web apps which usually accounted for a big chunk of the code.

Thats right, go canada
Canada is way bigger,
If Canada and USA would be in elementary school Canada would be the bully.
Maybe a security system which isn't the equivalent of a locked door in a corn field would be in order.
Slashdot posts with title containing "w/Pics" scare the bejesus out of me.
No, Huge difference, The player runs in a sandbox. That means everyone can be 100% certain that it won't install spyware of any sorts in the system.

No, There are no linux drivers for it. You can get it to run using ndiswrapper and the windows drivers though ( i'm posting, connected using one
