Yeah, Do The Evolution is an awesome video... I'd post a link to it, but my little DSL connection would fry:) Get it off Kazaa, it's worth the 30MB or whatever
I don't really see why you'd need to modify it for each host. Might as well just have one secure password if you're going to do this. So either having one password is inherently secure, or it's not, no need for a whole password scheme to make things complicated.
Here in Atlanta our mass transit system MARTA is mostly used by the poor community (at $1.75/ride it's prolly a little better than a car). The problem is, except for some people heading downtown during the morning and back out in the evening, that's all that rides it. Nobody rides MARTA just to get around town, everybody drives.
Atlanta traffic just plain sucks, I'd ride MARTA if I wasn't scared for my life every time I go on there. But it's true, I'd rather wait in traffic for 45 minutes, pay insurance, gas, road tolls, maintanence, etc... than ride MARTA. IMHO, this is a falure of the system. And, IMHO, this is where it needs to work. Right now, it's not the poor community that we need to get to ride mass transit, it's the people who can afford a car and actually have a choice in the matter.
(of course, I could go on for hours about how we need more rail lines and stuff, but you can look at the map and see that for yourself:))
I'm willing to bet that compared to the cost of the computers/internet connection (think of all the bandwidth they need)/staff/whatever, that land is prolly one of their lesser expenses.
Read the article before posting. This is -not- censorship. And why switch to Linux because of it? (now I'm sure I can come up with some other reasons to switch, but this is not one of them) It's not built in to IE or Nutscrape, it's just an add-on parents can get so that when litle Suzie is looking up information on Breast Cancer for a school report she doesn't accidentally get a pr0n site that reproduces windows like cancer.
Basically, this is not manditory - nobody is going to force you to use their filter (except perhaps your Mom) and it doesn't make anybody take any content off the Internet. As for the blocking all content that hasn't been rated - it's the only way to
a) make people rate their sites (assuming they want the largest audience possible)
b) protect themselves against unknown sites, after all, if it's not rated, who knows if it's Betty's Cooking Secrets or Live-XXX!!!
They were made because they liked science. I'm willing to bet they could have been told Science was for idiots and only losers studied it and they'd still do it because they loved it.
We'll never mass-produce scientific geniuses, no matter how good the education. All we can hope to do is help those that would otherwise never learn a thing about it. In this resepect, we are failing miserably.
I've had 190 so far. (of course you might have to change the path of the logs...). I love PERL as much as the next guy, but sometimes the UNIX shell is easier:)
Speaking as a home-schooled Christian with unfiltered DSL access in his bed room, I think that you're generalizing a bit. You should never underestimate the power of a vocal minority (1d10ts from Bob Jones and any Televangilest you'll ever see) to sound like the majority. I don't think many people care if 7-11 sells porn, I think a few vocal people do. I -certainly- don't want the Internet banned/filtered in schools/libraries.
I think it's quite an unfair generalization to say right-wing conservitives are like the Taliban (I don't really see what home schooling has to do with it, other then it seems that a large home schooling segment happens to be Christian... but a large segment happens to speak English too, let's remember:)).
I mean isn't the government suppose to represent the people?
Absolutly _not_! The purpose of government is to protect people, reguardless of their views. If the purpose was to just "do the will of the people" it's pretty much justified in doing _anything_, including things like the Holocaust, just because "it's the will of the people". Anyway, don't complain to me when the majority of people think that free speech is bad on the Internet and that's taken away, after all, as you said, "it's the will of the people".
So, merely the fact that a lot of people use Napster doesn't make it right or wrong.
Evidently I need to get an eating disorder. Since it seem the mortality rate for normal people is 100%, I stand a much better chance of living while being anorexic!
Actually, Scientific American had an atricle about this a while ago. Figuring you'd always need a slight bit of energy to live, and making that some number of BTUs per some span of time, they figuring out that from right now, you could live about 30 trillion years, a long time, but not forever.
Kinda depressing, I always wanted to be a good 31 trillion yeas old myself:)
well, we _know_ the Universe had a beginning. And there's no way to know anything outside of the universe (okay, there are a few ways, but not that we can do without something meta-physical doing something). Time before/after the big bang? time was _created_ at the big bang, it can't be before. (okay, it _can_, but again, that's not provable). Grades, Social Life, Sleep... pick two.
Genesis says "God spoke and the Universe was created" or something like that, while the first part is not provable, nor falsifiable; the latter part is proven true. God/Zeus/whomever could have used a big bang, and if he also likes science probably did, or else went through a lot of trouble faking evidence:)
I think it's great and I like the idea of an ISP a christian family could use without worrying what their kids might find on the net! What at pity that the Church here doesn't provide anything like this.
Actually, there are a few (assuming that "here" means the US):
What about Jabber IM and GAIM? Those are AIM clients too, you know. Anyway, what I'm wondering is, why the heck does AOL need to be forced to allow this. If, say, M$ took the code from GAIM and put it in MS Messenger, it'd be an AIM client, right? So why do we need the gov. forcing AOL to open up when it's kinda been done already?

So, um, since you admit it can never be proven, you accept on faith that there is no god? :)
(hey, I'm not saying there is, just that it's stupid to say there isn't)
So... let me get this:
:)
1. you are an athiest.
2. an athiest is somebody who doesn't believe God exists
3. you admit that the non-existance of God cannot be proven.
Sorry to nitpick, but you're just as illogical as the people you're arguing against
(PS, "agnostic" is the proper term for somebody who believes we cannot know about God (that is, if [s]he exists or not, which God [s]he is, etc...))
I'm willing to bet that compared to the cost of the computers/internet connection (think of all the bandwidth they need)/staff/whatever, that land is prolly one of their lesser expenses.
Well, I did copy it, but not for backup purposes :)

Anyway, IMNSHO, this is a good idea.

Prior art? like, say, a human being? :)
It'll be done by a computer program - hence the standard console interface.
Sounds like it's time for a genetic algorithm plus a bit of matrix game theory.
Just do a:
/etc/httpd/logs/access* | grep default.ida | wc -l
:)
cat
