    Are you sure your external screen is HDCP compliant?

    Have you bothered calling Hp about this? The geforce 9600 is HDCP compatible. According to this its a bug, not an HDCP issue. Who knows maybe they have a fix for this already.

    Thats not true. It wont sync automatically on battery power, but it syncs fine if you do a manual sync. You dont want it syncing every few hours only to pick it up a couple of days later and have the battery dead.

    To be fair, the amazing Italian place near me cant compete with McDonalds. Popularity doesnt necessarily translate into quality. Consider how one of the most popular apps for the iphone/ipod is the fart simulator and, well, things arent so cut and dried. Those who side soley with popularity really arent convincing.

    When I was 10 or 11 years old and my parents got me a 1200 baud modem for my Apple//e I managed to dial up a BBS and was asked for the first time to make a username and password. I dont remember the username, but I do remember seeing *'s come out as I typed, got confused, so I just made my password ******. Ta da! Problem solved.

    I just bought my brother a little lenovo and was shocked at the amount and general crapiness of the lenovo apps it came with. One of them was crashing at bootup. Its amazing how bad the situation is with OEM crapware nowadays.

    I spent 30 minutes doing uninstalls. Err no thanks Lenovo, I dont need your unstable wireless manager when the MS one is just fine.

    Once I cleared it all it ran like a top. I wish MS would step in and stop them from ruining otherwise decent laptops.

    Actually, thats untrue. Our solution at work is to weigh multiple blacklists. Im not sure what SORBS is weighed but its part of the overall spam score. Less blacklists means we are at the mercy of one or two big blacklists instead of averaging out the craziness by a weighted forumula. SORBS' faults dont matter when theyre only a small part of the equation. More samples means better signal to noise.

    Not surprised. The 1990s drew in tons of unqualified unprofessional people into IT. Anyone who could install ICQ and reboot an Win98 machine got some kind of job by clueless hiring managers. These people didnt develop professionally, they didnt finish school, they couldnt write a basic admin script, didnt know any OS9 or OSX let alone any linux, and they didnt know much outside of the most basic level 1 support tasks.

    Ive met these people and they really dont belong in the industry. Im not saying your friends are these people but there might be some overlap here. The culling in the last few years has sent a lot of people who dont belong in IT back to school or in different industries where they belong. Its more competitive now and when I mention, say, ssh I dont get a clueless look from the guy Im talking to. Having to work with unqualified bullshitters isnt desirable at all.

    No way, lets have the firmware do this. The problem with your approach is that the OS wont understand the drive as well as the manufacturer does, so it will always be a sub-optimal solution. Dont tie the hands of the manufacturer to put intelligence in his drives. For instance, the best way to wipe a disk is via an ATA command, and not through multi-passes of wipes. The manufacturer knows where the heads are and how the drive writes. The SSD situation is somewhat similar.

    This is why I think there was no fraud during this election. The Iranians are anti-secular people who never had an enlightenment, of course theyre going to continue to vote in the conservative candidate. Not to mention the president's role is almost purely ceremonial in Iran. The clerical councils and supreme leader have the real power. Its something akin to a dictatorship, but until the economy when sour on them, they didnt seem to mind. I hate the idea of the "common good of the average person." The average person in Iran hates your western values. Dont be naive.

    Im really sick of this "didja know the ak47 is the best weapon evar" attitude. The M16 certainly kills. A hole in your head, liver, lungs, etc can be made with either weapon. I dont care how "drug crazed" you are, that is going to take you down and most likely kill you.

    Sure, the AK is a larger round, but its also a lot more inaccurate and its a heavy weapon. If we gave AKs to our Marines we'd be hearing from the "didja know the ak47 is the most inaccurate weapon" crowd and its attendant conspiracy theories.

    The M16 is good enough for modern combat, drug fueled enemies or not. The M16's muzzle velocity plus its round size/weight is more than enough to cause hydrostatic shock. The round will tumble through the body just as well as the AK round.

    US healthcare is a capitalist system. The idea that people can be treated properly is very much secondary to its main goal: maximizing profits. I think people are finally understanding what capitalism means in healthcare, thus the recent interest in socializing healthcare.

    Currently its 100% legal to drag someone several years through the the system to milk their insurance. The doctors can simply argue that they wanted to be careful. The people arent quacks, theyre economically successful and understand how to play the game better than the rest. You dont pay off two mortgages and three cars by doing a good job. You do it by maximizing profits. A quick diagnosis for Crohn's is only a couple billable hours. 8 years of tests? Yeah, thats practically a summer cottage.

    The Natal tech is actually very neat. It projects an infrared grid and can measure distance by how the distorted the grid gets. Sorry if it gets in the way of your knee-jerk MS bashing.

    Actually, ratings do matter. All that matters is ratings, but you cant keep pre-empting the show with football and who knows what else. Pre-tivo people needed a set time to tune in. They didnt get it often enough with futurama and Fox pretty much pissed away its potential.

Hopefully, we can teach people, especially young people, that mental illness shouldnt be shameful and if they suspect they have it then they should get treated - not hide it away and have it lead to suicide like this guy.

    This is what's going to make or break this platform.

    I hate the idea that everything depends on purchasing apps. What about just making a damned good browser and letting me use it? Im sure 90% of the popular apps out there can be coded up as web apps, but instead Apple has created a market for buyable apps instead of promoting cross-platform free web apps. I just saw an iphone commercial about "there's an app to find apartments." Err, my beater Treo with WinMo5 does that. I just visit the apartment sites with my browser. No need to spend 10 dollars on another app.

    Why a PBX? If youre that serious then run your own wire. For existing wire you can buy a little VOIP box that will run through you existing wiring and ring your analog phones. I got one of these for 5 dollars when I first gave up on a land line. Ive since gotten rid of it and do cell-only, but it works.

    The problem is that you dont know where the bottleneck is. Im sure in cable networks the bottlneck in many scenarios is local and in other times its the backhaul. Assuming there's 100mbps of unused bandwidth between the cable node you are on and the node your pal is on may not be correct.

    Not to mention, the docsis protocl may not be able to understand who to lift the cap for and who not too. Considering there's no business reason to provide that service, perhaps you and your neighbor should spring for a wifi link.

    I think the sad part of this scenario is that there should be a business reason to provide this type of service. I imagine a municipal run ISP would be able to handle this pretty well and it would help the community. It would be nice to have a 50 or 60mbps link to everyone on my local node. Oh well, perhaps someday the municipal government will wise up.
