I don't recall stating there was no human interaction involved. In fact the program merely red flags the program, human interaction is required by mandate of the university. If any university does allow fully automated suspensions from an anti-cheating system then I would take it up with the Dean and board as that's a violation of student rights. And if you are suspended by one of these programs then appeal your case.
I don't know much about the BLAST and FASTA algorithms, but the Levenshtein distance just compares strings. Simply rename everything and tweak the structure of your code somewhat and it can give false results. I know here at university they run all source code through a program (forget the name) that analyzes control flow and other program characteristics and then compare it to those of other students, past students, and source code from the web.
I don't know how effective the program is as I don't cheat, but I do know a few students in the department that have nearly been suspended.
However, your last statement is spot on, the judge should throw them out of court;).
Are you just ignorant or naive? Locking down the precursors didn't kill the major producers it killed the little kitchen labs. The exact opposite of what you said happened. We handed the drug business to the cartels, mobs, and gangs, not the mom and pop cooks.
These large drug syndicates aren't exactly nice nor do they follow the law to the letter. They have more resources than a small time cook and they don't even have to deal with the pills which are adultered to hell to stop extraction of pseudoephedrine. So now the kitchen cooks have to actually know chemistry to extract the stuff or stop cooking. I've looked at current extraction techniques and they're getting extremely difficult for the uneducated, so much so that alternate methods are being researched in the clandestine chemistry ring. On the other hand, the cartels - whether they're in the US or not - produce it by the kilo, add some pretty nasty adulterants, and they do this all for the money.
So what does this accomplish? It makes it difficult for the people who have done NOTHING WRONG and promotes drug lords. This sounds like prohibition when the large gangs produced alcohol and adultered it. You were lucky if it was just watered down instead of methanol or some other nasty chemical. But good job, way to buy into the complete bullshit the government is spewing from their ass. Drug use has never been higher, quality of the product has never been lower, and to top it all off you're okay with this!
Denying access to history is the same as rewriting it. While we may remember what happens today and we might have some vague guess as to what went on internally, what about two generations from now? Assuming the USA is still standing and the spy agencies still have their way; what exactly do our grandchildren know happened historically? Nothing, just hearesay from their crazy grandparents. I think it's a bit worse than you make it out to be. Of course I could just be paranoid.
Console gaming is largely 3D gaming as well. So if PC 3D gaming is going out, then so is console gaming and frankly I don't see either of those happening.
And as far as the upgrade thing is concerned, you buy a new console every few years, why not some new hardware every few years? You don't have to have the latest and greatest always you know. Just IMO though.
Getting through college. Sorry but I'm not exactly in a position to help starving children in Ethiopia when I'm in debt from student loans. Maybe after when I can afford to live on my own?
I didn't mean to imply the technology was useless. It may very well have good applications. Putting synthetic DNA on a football is not a good application. I was actually ready to burn some karma on that comment as I'm very against sports where a guy gets paid millions to toss a ball or anything along those lines. Priorities are absolutely terrible in 1st world countries. I mean I know leisure activities are important but I don't think they're as important as we make them out to be. I would much rather go play a game of football than watch one.
I'd like to note that if a certain technology is needed it will be developed, manufactured need or not.
At least the we know where the United States' priorities are. War? Famine? Fuck that, let's support a sport so they can put synthetic DNA on a football.
Sorry, but sports are valued entirely too fucking much imo.
I'm going to be honest here. All I heard was, "Quake 3 is great, blah blah, I'm a fan boy, blah blah." Quake 3 was not revolutionary. It was anything but revolutionary. It's still the same gameplay dynamics. You run around, shoot people, jump every now and then, and try to get power-ups. Not that amazing. In fact it's just like every other FPS out there really. UT was also god damn fast in certain game types, hell, so is UT2k4. I'm not saying you have bad taste in games, but get a grip on reality. I have Quake3, and the expansion, and Quake 1, 2, expansions, UT, UT2k3, UT2k4, Half-life, Half-life 2, Halo, Halo 2, et al. If you can name it I probably have it. The only difference between them is the "feel" of the game, not the gameplay or the dynamics, but the "feel" of how your input is displayed as output (in a FPS context).
To be honest I much prefer a game like STARSIEGE: Tribes. I found that game to be absolutely fantastic as far as gameplay is concerned. This was a game that really did have very good balancing. The mix of weapons, classes, vehicals, and even the jet pack played a huge role in making it a game of pure fun. It even promoted team play in an era when it was uncommon. But at the end of the day it's just another FPS - albiet with a bit of gameplay magic I love.
So either your post was meant to be funny and I completely missed it, or I clearly have a different copy of Quake 3 than you.
1. The GPL isn't really a liberal license, the BSD license is a liberal one.
2. -
3. Last I checked there was a lot of free software for Windows too. OSS doesn't just stop at linux you know.
4. What in the hell are you smoking? Microsoft has a virtual monopoly on the market. I've yet to see something that Windows doesn't support and although linux has improved leaps and bounds in this area over the years it's still not complete. This is one of the drawbacks of linux.
5. More secure? If linux is more secure than Windows then it's only marginal. The difference is the user base. If I were trying to exploit something I'd much rather do so on 90% of the user base than the other 10% (percentages made up). Not to mention ma and pa aren't exactly the most tech savvy of consumers and may not know the importance of a firewall and updating often. Something which most linux users do know.
6. Yes, NTFS supports journaling, way to do your homework. And even with journaling the filesystem will still check itself every once in a while. And while we're on the subject of "OMG does it have support for journaling?!"; journaling isn't the only way to do it.
Your post was riddled with linux fanboyism. I'm all for OSS but let's at least be fair in our debates and not make unfounded and uneducated claims. To do so will make us no better than Microsoft and their claims. To be fair Microsoft is a business trying to compete with something that is free, I expect FUD from them. Every company does it for the money; businesses are inherently greedy.
This is mostly guess work on my part so if you have any corrections please tell me.
As far as I know the average settlement cost is $3,000. After 14,800 lawsuits that's $44.4 million. I don't really know the law in this area but is that $44.4 million even taxed? Or did they just make $44.4m sans some minor legal fees? And if they did just make this huge sum of money, how much of it is going to the artist who was 'starving to death' because of 'piracy'? $44.4m over 2 years would be about $61,000 a day, or about $2,500 an hour, that's a crazy $0.70 per second.
And don't give me that crap about video games leading to murder. Don't shoot down one bullshit argument against porn and uphold another bullshit argument about video games.
I completely disagree. While the PPM format is simple it will still be horrible to reverse engineer in the year 2105. Think about it, they view it all in binary. The first thing you should see is the header (which is ASCII). The first field is Pn where n is a number, then any type of whitespace, then the width, then whitespace, then height, then whitespace, then the scale, then whitespace, then data. Don't forget that anywhere inbetween Pn and the scale can have a comment started by # and ended by a linefeed. Now if they even have the ASCII character set in 2105 it might be possible to reverse engineer the format. However, by 2105 we could have quantum computers or something way different. Trying to figure out when a header ends and the data begins would be a nightmare.
And I actually just got done writing a PPM reader for my C++ class. It took more than 30 minutes to write and I had the specs for the format.
Do you have an example to prove that life must be carbon based, and mostly water and oxygen breathing? Let's face it, our little planet is unique right now. It could swing either way. One example - us - is hardly sufficient to prove a model. There are physical properties about the elements and molecules that make life possible on this planet, but only our life. Truth be told we don't quite know how life ever came into existence. Until we find another form of life that didn't come from our little back-water planet all we have is speculation.
So if you can prove the reverse, please contact someone in the scientific community immediately.
I completely disagree. Why do we refer to both genders using the masculine (or feminine) pronouns? I don't see a logical reason to introduce inaccuracies into our statements. I personally try (and often fail) to be gender inspecific in my general statements. And that's what it really comes down to, inaccuracies. We're not talking about equality for women or anything like that, we're talking about coherent, accurate, and precise English. Maybe it started off as a way for men to be more dominant than women and maybe some women would like that reversed, but come on now, let's not be childish over this situation by refusing to use non-gender specific descriptions in general statements simply to best the 'opposition'.
Software generally has a return policy of a) no returns if it's opened or b) exchange for the exact same title (to protect against defective media). That won't change as long as publishers care about preventing piracy.
Preventing privacy huh? Here's a little aside; my room mate bought a DVD player a few nights ago so we could watch my vast collection of DVD's on something other than my computer in my room. So we watched Spun and it worked fine, awesome we thought. The next night we tried to watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. But wait, what in the hell is wrong with the picture? Its' brightness continually modulates from dark to bright in intervals. This was their way of 'preventing' piracy. I had the DVD player hooked up through my VCR since my TV only has an RF jack. Fucking wonderful huh? I had to go buy an RF modulator so I could play a good 70% of my DVD's.
I care about piracy, I really do. But come on people this is getting ridiculous. I want to be able to return a game if I don't like it, I want to be able to play DVDs without buying an RF modulator for an older TV to bypass the VCR, I don't want to be assraped by corporations. It's really not that much to ask for.
Alright, let's assume for a moment that the Xbox 360 launch is a total flop. People just can't seem to justify the price tag for the one or two games they want to play at launch. Sony then delays the PS3 for a year so they can bolster their game library. Seems reasonable, except for the fact that the Xbox 360 will ALSO be bolstering it's game library continuously from the day of it's launch. Is the analyst just assuming no more games will be released after the launch titles? That's simply ludicrous. Hell, if Sony delays the PS3 for a year to improve it's game library then Microsoft will have a chance to lower it's console's price during the PS3's launch a year later. Then you have an interesting scenario where the Xbox 360 is cheaper and has more games that people know are good while the PS3 is more expensive with a ton of games that nobody has played yet.
Second, I don't think the new PS2 price cut is going to take away the Xbox 360's thunder. That's just on opinion of course and I have no idea how it will pan out. But considering the PS3 launch is (supposedly) fairly soon after the 360's launch I would rather save my money and buy that than an aging PS2.
Third, I've seen a lot of mention about the whole HD-DVD thing in this thread. Now console players are usually not as tech savvy as say a PC gamer. They don't have to be. Out of idle curiosity I asked my friend who is a major console gamer what he thought of Microsoft decision to not include an HD-DVD drive with the 360. He just sort of looked at me blankly, he had no fucking clue what it was. So will this hurt Microsoft in the slightest? Possibly if the media screams about them not having HD-DVD, but more than likely, no. I personally feel that an HD-DVD isn't even needed for the next-gen consoles, but hey, everyone can have an opinion eh?
Now assuming Microsoft doesn't completely fuck up the launch (i.e. - letting a major bug that renders the console useless slip by them, such as exploding power supplies) then I can't even see the console flopping. But even if it does Sony would be making a huge mistake by delaying the PS3 another year.
Besides, the Xbox has Halo and a few other decent games. The main one is Halo though. Halo 3 will sell the Xbox 360, there's no question about it. This is a moot speculation by an analyst who obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.
Just Republicans? Hardly. The Democrats aren't any better. I'm not even sure why we have political parties anymore, they're all focused on getting more power and more money anyway.
How dare EA publish this filth. Seeing a blurred out 1 inch virtual person naked could have devastating effects on a teenager. They might join a nudist colony which is very socially unacceptable (aside from the fact that we're born naked). Hell, maybe they will pick up that horrible habbit of showering while nude, or having sexual intercourse in the buff; they might even stop going to the bathroom fully clothed. Heaven forbid they do these completely unnatural things.
This guy is a media whore and I actively support the strengthening of the human gene pool by 'mysteriously' getting rid of him.
Yeah, but it's okay to show extreme violence at those same hours on those same channels, but the human body and the natural process of sexual intercourse, heaven fucking forbid.
I don't recall stating there was no human interaction involved. In fact the program merely red flags the program, human interaction is required by mandate of the university. If any university does allow fully automated suspensions from an anti-cheating system then I would take it up with the Dean and board as that's a violation of student rights. Actually it's easier to start out with 4 or 5 and work outwards from there. For instance, place 4 somewhere, then 5, then 3, then 6, etc...

Feel free to correct anything I've presented.
Is that kind of like anal leakage after you've been eating jalapeneos? If so I have a second occurrence to report...

Yes.. It's human nature to be discontent.. and that separates some of us from the apes.
I always thought it was the fact that some of us don't fling poo at eachother that seperated us from the apes... I guess I was mistaken.
;)
