Cultures do develope differently, I won't argue with that. But we are talking about a very specific game. Cultures don't evolve differently where gamers of different cultures magically gain the ability to snipe better in Counter-Strike, or work as a team better. This is just my opinion, but I don't think culture has anything to do with how you play video games. You learn how to play video games from scratch, not from culture.

Somehow I don't think that the location of a human being on the Earth inherently determines their specialty in Counter-Strike. Infact it's a ridiculous concept that suggests humans of a different nationality are fundmanetally different than that of another nationality.

The author needs to think about the generalizations he's making and realize that they're just that, generalizations.

Try Starsiege: Tribes. It's an old game but people still play it. It's actually a pretty easy game to pick up, but damn hard to master. You will lose the first couple games, but thats going to happen in any FPS you pick up. Tribes takes advantage of the third dimension (jet pack) so it teaches you to lead properly and it gives you a good feel for hitting someone with a projectile. Once you get good at Tribes you're almost garunteed to be good at another FPS.

  11. Satellite on Cable TV Versus Satellite TV? · · Score: 1

I can only speak from personal experience, but I have never had a problem with Satellite. I have had DirectTV for around 5 or so years now and the only time I have either lost the signal or recieved too many artifacts in the picture for coherent viewing are in major storms. The kind of storms where you turn off your TV to be safe. I've also had a problem when there was about 3ft of snow on the dish from a recent snow storm. Depending on where you put the dish, I've found out that shoes + broom = fix.

Wouldn't this be considered false advertising though? I mean if you say unlimited you can't just go back on it because it isn't economically feasible. If a company told me I had unlimited bandwidth and then sent me a letter that I exceeded my bandwidth limitation I would be pretty irate. I would be especially pissed because not only are they employing false advertising, but even their own AUP that they refer to makes no mention of a bandwidth limitation.

People hate intrusive pop-ups/unders, not ads. For instance, I don't mind /.'s ad at the top at all. But if I'm bombarded with pop-up after pop-up after pop-under after pop-under I get extremely pissy. Furthermore I will never buy a product from any company that supports and/or uses pop-ups/unders.

I don't even mind TV commercials, but if they started poping up during a TV show I'm sure I would throw the TV out the bloody window.

    Okay, here is the article.
ITB: Security starts with the developer. What do you think that developers can do to harden their apps and how is Microsoft helping with tools?
BG: You don't need perfect code to avoid security problems. There are things we're doing that are making code closer to perfect, in terms of tools and security audits and things like that. But there are two other techniques: one is called firewalling and the other is called keeping the software up to date. None of these problems (viruses and worms) happened to people who did either one of those things.

So why are we grading Microsoft on security when it is apparently the consumers responsibility. I'm not saying I disagree with taking responsibility as a consumer, but I don't think Microsoft is adequetly doing their job.

Give me fair warning that the game just went gold and I'll buy it, but don't jerk me around with numerous delays breaking numerous "concrete" release dates.

  21. How dumb on GTA Violence, the Media, and the Gamers · · Score: 0

I disagree with both The Ombudsman and Curmudgeon. I'm not going to sit idly by and ignor negative media articles on video games (no matter how incorrect they are). We as gamers might know that the article is wrong, but the rest of the public doesn't. They'll eat this stuff up and support restrictions, censorship, and bans on video games. Furthermore I'm not going to 'start talking realistically about degrees of harm, freedoms, and responsibility' of video games. Video game producers have the right to produce a game with any content the please and I have the right (as an adult) to buy that video game and enjoy it. If video games were such a bad thing then how is it that there aren't millions upon millions of shootings and homocides by gamers? There are only those very few that, in my opinion, already had some screws loose. Not to mention a lot of these video game related crimes are commited by minors. Let's not blame the parents or the store that sold them the game or anything, that would be *logical*. And for a humorous closing note, "Computer games don't affect kids- I mean, if PacMan had affected us then we'd all be running around in darkened rooms eating magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music."
