  1. IGN with sublety? on Games As The New Advertising Frontier · · Score: 1

Yeah, the McGriddles week sticks out in my mind. Then there's also IGN's ads between every other page of content. Are they gonna stick ads in on loading screens on us then? Do we get into marketing tactics to delay loading times so they can get more eyes on the product for longer sets of time?

    Wonderful...

  2. Hashed out thoughts on this... on DVD Decrypter Author Served With Take-Down Order · · Score: 1

I figured out a few things.

They redo a new copy scheme every few months to try and further deter backups of movies. The R2 version of Closer has a really difficult to crack copy protection on it for example.

When they do that, I see a necessary trend for studios to "double dip" on DVD releases. They delist the original relase from retail, and pimp out a new version months or years later with 2-3 extras, or doubled with the films inevitable Direct to Video sequel as a two pack.

I think this explains the trend better from a business perspective than it does for a "frustrated" consumer "forced" to rebuy movies for newer features. Take for example, XXX. When the released this movie as a "directors cut" back in April, I could have cared less about the extras. All it was, was a newly shot scene added in to explain Vin Diesel's death for the setup of the sequel. If you never cared for the sequel, what was the benefit at all of buying this?

The other point is that I see the need, for us at least, to start purchasing more USED DVD's from local shops that sell this. Blockbuster's gotten into this trend, so it might be worth it. This would stem out of wanting to get a movie with no protection on the disc.

  3. Broadcast television, we hardly knew ye... on MPAA CEO Dan Glickman on the Broadcast Flag · · Score: 2, Insightful

"Without proper protections, it will be increasingly difficult to show movies, television shows or even baseball games on free television"

Boo hoo. Take Fox then and shut it down. Big loss. If it means I miss out on next week's Stacked, American Idol, My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss, Super Nanny, or half the crap they've been peddling on network TV for the last 6 years, they can keep it. It's a sad stste our television entertainment industry is in when half our network lineup is bad reality shows and the rest is courtroom drama. There's nothing challenging or entertaining on broadcast television anymore.

"Some say that this regulation would take away TiVo, but in fact, the FCC has certified a TiVo implementation of the broadcast flag. The broadcast flag does not inhibit copying, nor does it prevent redistribution of programming over a personal home network; it only restricts unauthorized redistribution of programming over the Internet and other digital networks."

So why does Tivo get the only "Get Out of Jail Free" card? Why can't a viable model like eDonkey or BT be allowed? He's allowing for transfer in a personal home network. Why's that okay but not online? The content you record off air in CA is no different than the content in TX, AZ, NJ, or NY. Who cares if it came locally?

"The irony, of course, is that modern cable and satellite delivery systems already have imbedded technical means that maintain the value of digital programming by preventing its redistribution over digital networks. The broadcast flag extends that same protection in the estimated 15 percent of American households that do not subscribe to cable or satellite services but rely instead on over-the-air broadcast television."

No there isn't. Tell me where that flag is that prevents shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, American Chopper, Reno 911, or the Sopranos from getting around online on file trading networks? I've never seen it get enforced. I would think that if this is a problem, it would have been flipped on at the satellite's end LONG ago.

"Our companies want to continue to show their movies and television shows to viewers who don't or can't subscribe to cable or satellite systems. But without the broadcast flag, that option will look less and less appealing. In the end, it will be the consumers who suffer the most if the broadcast flag is not mandated for the digital era."

Really? Who makes money off of television... You or us? I think consumers can find newer and better ways of entertaining ourselves in a lack of "appealing" television options. Glickman's concerned that we'll all suffer with no TV. For christ's sake! Are we all that stupidly addicted to Survivor and American Idol?! I would hope not.
If he thinks local television will ONLY suffer when their crappy programming gets killed off, he needs to go talk to some of the smaller local network affiliates who had to shutter their news departments due to lackluster lead-in ratings performance from their national network feed.

And if you don't like your ipod, sell the thing on ebay and go buy a creative zen micro. They have lots of powder blue leather pouches for those out there. Lots of 'em. And? As an added bonus, you'll be able to buy all your music from all those stores and be happy with it.

Well, it's a matter of a better educated consumer when you go into a best buy looking for a game you'd normally preorder at Gamestop. I have preordered my fair share of games in the past there, but it was for these same games.

Unfortunately, they don't answer the phone, "This is GS, where you can preorder your copy of Lunar 4." Instead, it's preorders for Madden, GTA, GTurismo, a console bundle, or a game informer subscription. That ain't my market for games.

I'll play the GTAs for a bit, but it's not very common for the GS' around me to suggest anything that's not a top 10 ranked preorder or a used title.

Am I not supporting the industry by walking up to a well stocked BB and buying it there the same day as 200 16 year olds line up at a gamestop?

You're feeding me a line that you think Gamestop is the smaller company here. Gamestop's been folded over and over again over SO many other game stores.

You're talking: Babbages & Software Etc. merge, they foldover funcoland, get parented by Barnes and Noble, and then sweep up EB. What part about that suggests that GS is a small-ish mom&pop store only scraping by on preorders?

I've got a reason not to pre-order or even frequent a smaller GS store. Haggling for more, future preorders. Again, I live in Houston, I don't have a problem locating games and consoles on launch days at all. I bought 8 Nintendo DS consoles on launch day without a single preorder from 5 stores. None at EB or GS. They were all "sold out"

I don't see why being a gamer makes you susceptible to supporting "boutique" pricing. They're always $5-$10 higher than ANY other retailer. The only real incentive to shop here is for the hope of them stocking some random RPG they didn't keep in stock at BB.

  10. ... to better compete? on GameStop buys EB · · Score: 1

I turn to the PSP launch as a case in point of how they suck at competing with BB and WalMart.

Both of my local GS ring me the same old line of "Preorders only, not enough for everyone..."

But I go to Best Buy that morning, and they have 500 consoles for a line of 20 people.

Are you telling me that a retailer that has a 3:1 location advantage over another retailer can't stock a better ratio of consoles?

They can grasp at straws of "not being as big" as the other guy, but they're in this industry, not outside of it. They need to learn to get customers, you need to stock the merchandise.

I'm suprised that their pre-order scare tactic sales technique has lasted as long as it does.

I haven't pre-ordered ANY game since Super Monkey Ball 2, and I've NEVER had a problem finding that game in stock, ANYWHERE local.

Well, there's a problem with all of that.

    There's no 1080p. 1080i's the limit.

The HDV spec is written out already. This is part of the spec. If we took the limitations of a format and didn't work with them because of it, we'd all still be snubbing video in the first place over film. The 1080 output of this camera looks good on a TV. Certainly far better than 720X480 offered by DV resolution. Although HDV isn't as wonderful looking as full on HD, it's still good enough that if you just up the color saturation, it's going to smoke ALL DV quality footage and look fantastic on a DVD.

Although I would probably shoot 720p if given the choice myself, 1080i on HDV looks more than adequate for most productions, and his film won't suffer because of it.

  15. Re:What about Liquid Edition Pro? on Comparisons of Non-Linear Video Editing Packages? · · Score: 1

LE is a good editing tool, but it's totally driven by how fast a computer you have. If you don't have the biggest baddest of everything, it'll take just as long as an unassisted (ie. a dedicated PCI board) NLE. LE on anything less than a 2.8 with less than a GB of ram and a standard Geforce card is not all that good of an editing experience.

It can also be very awkward for a casual editor to get deep enough into it. It's good on the surface for editing, but for file management, DVD's, and some of the more advanced features, it can be VERY confusing unless you've had some hands on time with AVIDs and you know how they work. It's very much like working on an AVID in that regard. If I had to choose between AVID or LE, I'd pick LE because it's MUCH more accessible than AVID is.

But if choosing between LE and something like a Matrox supported Premiere Pro, I'd go with Matrox. Interface issues aside for some people, the pure speed at which you get things done faster MORE than makes up for that.
