The real problem is the next stage of advert evolution, which will be when content providers still use third parties to sell and supply adverts, but start to act as proxies for the adverts.
I have a simple solution - don't use their site:)
I dont think i know any site that i couldnt live without that use ads to get their revenue.
So if thats what it comes to - fine, i wont be using such a site at all.
Are you sure about that? I am a VERY casual gamer - I have a modded XBOX - so I can use it to play my mp3's and videos, AND so I dont have to find my original(and paid for) Madden Disc when I feel for a little gaming.
And I really dont think I am that unusual a user...
I am happy about paying for games(allthough I find them FAR to expensive, so I buy very few), but I think its a hassle to find the discs when I want to play a game.

And the human body would be totally different from anything a martian body has ever seen!
Odds are that the human body would be much more dangerous for the martian bacteria than for the human body.
Most bacteria/virii has problems transferring between different mammals - why should it be any easier for extraterrestial bacteria?
How on earth is an argument like that "insightful"?
"Getting milk from the store is more convenient than having your own cow" is the biggest lie ever!
Lots of farmers gets their milk from cows without a problem.
But for the topic:
When I write a binary format that is basicly just a filedump of som c-struct, how compatible is that with c#?
Sure - I CAN read it - but it takes effort.
If I wrote the same file in xml, it would be pretty effortless to read it in php, c#, java, VB, you name it.
And with the binary file i get the added bonus that extending the file WHILE maintaining backwards compability is a bitch.
Can this be overcome by a smart developer - sure, but it would take effort.
Extending the xml-file would be pretty simple.
There are other bad things about xml - why not focus on these, instead of pulling things out your behind?
Surface touchdown is at 12:34 GMT, and cassini stops receiving data at 14:44 GMT - so the probe could in theory send for 2 hours from the surface.
But - if your dad SURVIVED - why would he have needed a warning?!? :)
(Yes yes - sorry - bad joke - mod me down!)
On the other hand, Linux contains lots of code drivers for products, which arent counted in the windows source code?
/. ;o)
Still apples to oranges though - But isnt that a requirement on
They are not DIRECTLY elected - but its the heads of the governments in the different countries - Which each are backed by a majority.
:)
And the council has not approved anything yet - so no need to badmouth them yet!
Personally I dont think the lobbyists will succeed - Poland would never allow it.
Hang on!
Patens has not been approved! The parliament voted no, and now the patent lobby is TRYING to convince the EU to do it anyway!
IF they manage to do it THEN there is something wrong - but up until now, the democracy seems to actually work.
So if you want to badmouth EU - at least have some better arguments, instead of saying things that are not true.
Disclaimer - I am definately pro-EU, but I DO see valid aruments against it - just none that are worse than the benifits.

No - I would leav that to stupid americans... ;o)
:))
(Laugh - its a joke ffs!
I think you are missing his point!
HardOCP and Anandtechs performance figures is just as bad as ATI's as they took some of the most stressfull levels.
A proper benchmark should use all the game, or a couple of levels that represent the average of the game.
Consider for a sec what the first I in IIRC stands for :)
;)
What you said is basicly as silly as: What WTF!
Yes - as easy as porting a windows program to linux...
There is MUCH more to it than just the architecture.
Look how many platforms linux runs on - supporting different architectures is not THAT hard - but porting between two completely different api's are.
You mean this?
Somewhere the Public ATM is connected to the public internet!
;)
Not directly, but if the online transaction talks to the same backend as the ATM down the line, there is the possibility of getting in there.
Unless offcouse a human is sitting manually and copying the numbers from one system to the other!
ANd as long as there is a network connection, there is a possible security issue.
Why are you reading slashdot then?
:)
Slashdot would be unreadable if your browser did not accept fucked up html?
Not saying that I have a better solution - just pointing out that you're idea is not really a great idea!
Why is it "so probable" that this would happen?
Usually parachutes actually deploys!
I smell something rotten in denmark.
Sorry - didnt meen to fart!
I run a community site with around 500 users.
The most important thing is a ligtly used forum(200 threads now afair)
DB size is just below 27MB.
I think ALOT of sites looks like mine when it comes to database size...
Well - the article states that they have tested exactly this.
People do not use the "looks" of a word to recognize it - my example came from the article itself - people could be trained to read upper case text.
(This was one of the arguments against the word recognision theory)
And if you had read the rest of the article, you would know that this is just because 99% of all we read is lowercase.
People can easily be trained to read text in caps as fast as lowercase text - or mirrored text.
What I fail to understand is how randomizing the middle letters of a word doesnt affect reading much. I had hoped he would use that as an example.
Tihs is a emxpale of the efecft.
Hello there, Steve! ;)
Well - you just load the backup and you are up and running again!
Quite a bit faster than a full system restore!
Funny - this anonymous user asks to mod the parent up.
:)
And this anonymous user has the exact same spelling mistake in "internationalization" as its parent have!
Actually, I am a professional C#/ASP.NET guy.
But yes, I am ALSO a Java guy - the right tool for the right job you know!
And in the link supplied, much of his gripes was with the jar tool being slow compared to tar.
And with a Hello World program doing alot of extra stuff!
But those are things java really wasnt meant to do well!
THAT is why I find it silly to mod it insightful.
