not to be nitpicky or anything but isn't the problem the lack of ambient light at the end of the day and the fact that the low angle of the sun is more likely to cause direct sunlight to cut through a turbine rotor disk causing what is commonly known as shadow-flicker?
I agree. I bought the full version to have more control over what it did but the full version just takes over your PC in a similar fashion to symantec or mcaffee. It seems like the only way to have a safe computer is to not use it and that's the way these "security" suites are going: "we'll make your PC unusable so you don't get into trouble"
There are very few people hacking, at least on the games I play like counter-strike and team fortress. It probably just seems that way to you because you're not very good.
I have lots of old nvidia cards too which work as well as they ever did. And I have friends with even older cards that still work as well as they ever did. I can get them to write in too or would you rather they just tell their stories to me and I relay them?
I was actually only saying that in order to not be modded off topic. I have no interest in the discussion between a bunch of heavily biased pro-science geeks (count me as one) discussing how out to lunch another bunch of doomsayers are. My real problem was with his signature as several people have already spotted.
If you feel persecuted by censorship laws banning child porn then I am ok with that. If you think that anti-child-porn laws stop you from letting your daughter run around naked or from you hugging her while she does that then I feel for you but you still need help.
Ok I'm done. Call me off topic. Call me a troll but I can't just stand by while some twat tries to re-brand child porn appreciation as freedom. You're free to fantasize all you want. When you need to do it using photos of real children you crossed the line. Its really not that hard to figure out. Lots of "political correctness" is ridiculous. Part of being an intelligent adult is being able to work out which is which.
Now you imagine that the principal is nothing of the sort and some silly girl is endangering his reputation and his whole way of life including the security of his children. Already, you suspect him of paedophilia and yet he has most likely done absolutely nothing wrong.
The fact that anyone is arguing here that a schoolgirl should be sued for playing a prank is almost too ridiculous to argue against if it wasn't so disturbing. In any other country but the US, using litigation to teach children that their actions have consequences would be seen for what it is: insanity.
In any other country, the parents of the girl would be in agreement with the teachers. Its only a temporary suspension and it needs to be done in order for the school to continue to operate with any semblance of order. To have parents and children in such combative relationship with the institutions which are attempting to educate and nurture your young people cannot be constructive and for parents to support their child in such irresponsible behaviour only teaches her that it is her right to do and say whatever she likes regardless of who it hurts. Great!
I don't believe even mister Obama can save a country so fucked up that the education system is not seen to be working in partnership with parents.
Sorry I didn't read the entire rant but I think I got the actual story which is that a student made unsubstantiated allegations against the principle of her school and he then suspended her from the school.
He could and arguably should have sued her for defamation. I think he took the saner approach of suspending and that its best all-round. With rights come responsibilities. With freedom of expression comes the responsibility to not willfully destroy the reputations (and livelihoods) of innocent people.
A suspension is not an expulsion. The student needs to be thankful the principle is so understanding. If he didn't do something then his job would quickly become untenable.
We all fly all over the planet several times a year for business and pleasure. Saying that Al Gore should not go on a lecture tour to try to educate Americans because it uses energy in a way which is completely routine for most of us is not only farcical but it belies the weakness of the skeptic position. Why not just stick your fingers in your ears and shout "la la la I can't hear you"?
As for people doubting the Manhattan claim (not that I've seen an inconvenient truth) just look at Manhattan on Google Earth and then compare it with the 70m sea level rise that is forecast if the main ice sheets on Antarctica and Greenland melt. The claim that most of Manhattan could be underwater due to sea level rises due to climate change is not so exaggerated.
What puzzles me is why Republicans take the global consensus of anthropogenic climate change to be a personal insult against them. Can someone explain this please? It makes no sense to me. One could blame any political hue for climate change. Its the human race as a whole which has caused it. Yes some people in the developing world have some catching up to do but fundamentally, climate change is what we do as a species.
I think a lot of us would like to know the name of this amazing phone. Personally, I've been looking for a phone like that (albeit not putting that much energy into it) for several years. If you have one already, why not share so we can stop reading about things like openmoko?
ok its a cheap (and arguably racist and for that I apologise) shot but all I could hear in my head was president Kim from Team America and I had to share....
(btw I once met a girl called Riri and it was all I could do to not ask if that was what her parents riri intended to call her so I guess I am racist and I should just accept it and stop apologising)
Really? The best and brightest minds once went into secondary school teaching? This golden age must, presumably, predate the well-known adage "if you can't do, teach" then. Now don't get me wrong, I do believe that teaching should be considered a vocation and that it should be well-compensated both in money and esteem but to infer that: the reason that the computer age didn't start in the the 19th century; or that we don't yet have a cure for cancer; or that fusion is still 40 years away - is that the best and brightest minds were too busy teaching kids in some imaginary golden age of secondary school education - I'm just not buying it. Nice idea for a recruiting campaign though:)
so that you enter as a landed immigrant. I am just getting my landed immigrant status now after 5 years (because I'm lazy and disorganised).
Of course the main thing about changing countries is that whatever you do you feel like you're the first person who ever changed countries but if you are patient, its all fine:)
If I were you though I would emigrate to NZ instead.
I would support folding at home if they supported nvidia GPUs. I don't think they have revisited the possibility of supporting nvidia since the 8800 came out and CUDA. I could let them use my Q6600 but I would just find the whole thing very frustrating and a waste of potential so I will probably just continue to leave my PC idle overnight.
Insightful? Maybe your fat-laden carves require dragging. Mine actually actively contribute to my locomotion. This is in stark contrast to the springs in the "cheetah" prosthetics which merely store and return energy that the runner has already expended. Even with these amazing devices the amputee runner is still at a disadvantage (to an athlete that is, you should probably save your pennies and go get your legs cut off ASAP).
See here if you want more info http://technology.newscientist.com/channel/tech/mg19426055.200
His prosthetics are actually less efficient than human legs for running so they confer no advantage. If you want to know more try searching the New Scientist archive. They have a good article on this at http://technology.newscientist.com/channel/tech/mg19426055.200
although I think you need to subscribe to see it.
To quote from the article
"Most prosthetic leg specialists say such concerns are ill-founded, for now at least. The prosthetic legs, which are made by the Icelandic company Ossur, act like springs which store energy as the foot is pushed into the ground, and then return much of it to the runner, just as tendons do in a natural ankle. However, unlike natural legs, the Ossur prosthetics lack the muscles to generate their own power, and so provide much less energy overall than natural legs, the experts say."
I think there is a case for banning amputee runners from using power assisted prosthetics or prosthetics that were unnaturally long but I think that would be an obvious move that could be made even without the expert opinions of/.ers.
I also think that makes about 99% of posts here irrelevant but don't let that spoil your fun.
Thank you.
Nick
Oh if only it were that simple: that GWB is the evil genius and its not all his father's henchmen. I'm gonna try to live in your world though - its much sunnier than mine:)
You're making a great point. It was only when I started travelling to the US a lot that I realised that the incredibly friendly and accomodating people I met there (much more so than Canada where I live or the UK where I'm from) bore absolutely no relation to the monsters ruling the ultimate rogue state. In fact, rather than painting the people of the US with the same brush as its administration we should focus our attention on the fact that these good people (I have never been anywhere where people will go so far out of their way to help strangers) have had their democracy taken from them by a ruling class that cares nothing for them. I would only differ in the length of time that this has been going on. According to Chomsky (and he makes a compelling case), you've had the same administration for the past 100 years. It takes two guises and one is much better at PR.
Wow! Check out the torrent of righteous indignation! Believe me I've learnt my lesson and will keep my sarcasm to myself in future (not really, but part of me wishes I was capable of such a thing). I thought I was telegraphing the joke with the "internet thing". You didn't think for a second that that might be a joke? I mean does anyone you've ever met really talk like that in earnest?
The "piece of wisdom" was actually in jest. I expected my hyperbole to be spotted as such on here and yes open source is more than just a way of doing business (I should have been more specific).
I think the important thing to remember here is that the original article did nothing more than to flaunt the ignorance of the person writing it when it comes to the terms open source and free software.
Incidentally, I highly recommend "Open Source Licensing: Software Freedom and Intellectual Property" by Lawrence Rosen for anyone thinking of going into business with an open source model or trying to persuade their boss to.
Open Source isn't some hippy anti-capitalist religion. Its a way of doing business. If you alienate or disqualify companies who want to make a profit from being "true open source" then I and many like me will have to go back to releasing proprietary software only. What pap! When people like this get to air their views, this whole free speech and the internet thing have gone too far.

You've got me convinced but I'd be interested to know how you came to that conclusion and what qualifies you to make it.

Paying for child porn either directly or indirectly (through viewing adverts say): complicity in and commissioning of actual horrific crime
