What? Who reads the manual? Are you refering to a printed manual or one that naggs you endlessly. I guess that's why I am single. I didn't follow "the manual." I guess the fact that I'm posting to /. could be a factor also.

I want to donate to this worthy project. It took me a long time but I finally found this page. From the looks of it they have collected just over $2600. Archive.org says that they are a registered non-profit so they must be getting donations from other sources.

Why would Apple be any different? Apple is looking out for their own interests. They make little to no money with the ITMS. They make their money with the iPod. If people can play their ITMS music on other portable music players Apple will not sell as many iPods and make less money.

You might say this sentence is revenge. I don't think it is but I do believe he should have a longer sentence for one and only one reason, public safety.

Maybe 18 months will give him time to rethink what he has done and possibly prevent another accident.

(Coming back to reality) OSS does have problems. In my experiences the problems are not techical but are with the interface. I started using Linux in 1998 and over the past six years the UI has improved. Linux is a mature OS and can no longer be considered a hobby OS but with that being said the interface, (KDE, Gnome, ect.) is still not as clean as Windows.

  19. Big difference..... on When Does Usability Become a Liability? · · Score: 1, Interesting

One cannot compare a service/daemon to an operating system. The average user will never configure Apache or Microsoft's IIS.

I'm not defending Microsoft at all. Windows has many problems that need to be fixed. The best example is root access for users. The problem stems from Window's "root" (I made a funny) which is DOS, a single user OS. Linux on the other hand from the beginning was a multiuser OS. The problem I now see is that people are trying to make Linux too easy (ie. Lindows). This sounds good on the surface but I fear Linux is moving to the single user model on the desktop.

The best thing Microsoft can do now is to start with a new codebase.
