  1. Re:sometimes low tech is best on NY Times Endorses Open-Source Election Software · · Score: 1

If Florida taught us anything is that people can screw up even the simplest of voting tasks. Even the optical readers had an undervote - just smaller than the punch card system. Interpretation of "intent" of the voter varied so widely that 100% accuracy was clearly not accomplished. We won't even discuss the voters disenfranchised because their absentee ballots were not properly post marked (like the voter has control over that). An electronic system with a printed record that the person actually verifies is potentially more accurate then paper and pencil.

I'm a neurologist with a past history of programming. There are no windows systems that I am aware of that perform direct patient care functions.

I am in the middle of the largest medical center which has departments in the top 10 US News and World Reports. The IT system that everyone uses is, however, completely windows based. The systems we use to access patient labs, reports, etc are Windows based. Windows users, but not mac or linux users, can access the data from home/office using VPN technology. I can see MRI, CT, and radiology online but I am unable to look for the scans by anything other that those that are patient related - looking for scans I ordered or having a patient list for me is too complicated for these systems. Lab systems are the sameway. Incredible, there are no functions like tell me what labs are new, tell me my patient labs, how about a screen with all of todays labs.

As you can see, we are way behind in using computer technology. They will wake up to the benefits of different type of systems about 10 years from now.

The smart thing they did was see that the GUI would take off. They then got Steve to sign off on them using it. They they made it hard to impossible for competitors to match them by not giving them all of the hooks needed in Windows. They used additional monopolistic tactics as well (as found in Federal court). Given the overall cost to the company, it is clear that crimem in this case, does pay. The only product which they managed to sell which was superior for its time was Microsoft Office which benefited from both the head start on the GUI and from inside operating system information.

The key is not if the code is open source where anyone can submit modifications, the key is that the source code be open so anyone can verify any potential issues with the software. A second written record that is the official vote is also key. This way you can routinely recount a number of boxes to look for programming errors and actually conduct a 100% recount if required.

The study actually looked at medical errors each year and did not determine if the medical errors were in any way significant. i.e. if a patient did not get a med at the time they were suppose to because they were getting a test, that was an error. This error was counted the same as a patient getting the wrong medication - a much more serious situation.

Mistakes do happen. Significant mistakes are fortunately quite rare.

Most lawsuits do not come to trial but cost thousands to defend.

Many lawsuits are valid, many are not.

A friend of mine had his insurance spend $35,000 before the judge threw out the case. The judge actually said the case was so bogus that he thought it was reasonable for my friend to sue the plantiff. The problem is these cases are hard to win and the plantiff has no money. Now if you could sue the lawyer for bringing a bogus case that could be a deterent.

It seems to me that the majority of posters are upset with the concept that their civil liberty is infringed by either having to 1) pay for a breathalyzer in their car or 2) have to use a breathalyzer in their care. How many deaths per year is your civil liberty worth? I do not see anyone complaining that their car has a bumper which they may not need if they do not have a car accident? How about the cost of seat belts? Personally if the drunks only killed themselvers, it would not be a public health problem. But being a doc who has worked in the public hospital ERs, I have seen too many families destroyed by the drunk drivers hitting those cars full of people who were not drinking but only in the wrong place at the wrong time. Personally, I would prefer an impairment test prior to starting your car so if your reaction time was deemed to slow to drive, you could not start your car whether it was from alcohol, prescription drugs, lack of sleep, etc.
