...who fears government having sole access to technology that its own citizens would be jailed for?
The autonamous technology is already out there. Look at the DARPA Grand Challenge. And, it's not just big corporations but universities and small organizations. If you are talking about the guns. Well, you may not trust the government with those big guns with the checks and balances. But, who would trust you and others with those guns but without those checks and balances?
So, you talk about future dictators having more tools of torture. Do you think they are not doing great with the tools they have now?
I'd rather return to the "No Standing Army" policy of individual state militias that can be called up to defend our borders in the event of a real declared war.
I kind of like this idea but it is not practical in this world. The US is a big target for many reasons. The top guy always is. Can a militia get up to arms quickly enough? Can they militia men have the training that regular army can have? No to both. It would put us in a loosing situation against our enemies. This is no longer practical.
I know we think we are intitled... but come on... this is what every industry is doing. I mean, damn, I don't use M$ stuff either... but, I also don't think I am entitled. I am blessed to make some loot and have a job. I get raises that are good enough for me to live comfortably.
I bet there will be a widespread virus attack by the end of next year. That's when symentic will have finished writing, testing, finding a solution for it.
Maybe it's time to go back to the zack morris cell phone. SUre it's a little bigger but I want to see someone write a virus for that thing.
The idea here is sales. This does not talk about usage, swithing, or anything else.
So, all of the free downloads and installs are not counted here. Windows had a lot of sales, unix lost some and Linux increased in sales. That's dollars and cents not usage.
With all of the free solaris downloads, linux downloads, and BSD downloads it's no suprise that unix purchases are going down. Why pay for it if you can get it free?
And, in a world where the top few decision makes get most of the money and it's a lot of money they will keep pushing it and trying to beat down the voice of the majority.
US export restrictions for cryptographic software were violated when PGP spread worldwide.
This bring up an interesting point on ITAR and the US. Some encryption technologies could violate ITAR if they are done in the US and then exported to other countries. If I remember right, that was part of the reason encryption on OpenBSD was done in Canada.
Oh, and there are a few people who also consider encryption a matter of freedom of speech.
Some would, but how many governements and what is protected under the law. That is different everywhere. Others, also, consider it a privilege.
Some of these laws, in paticualr with the US, are actually there to protect it from other countries. Many people in the country may not want to protect the countires competitive edge but others do and that is part of what our government has been taked with for a long time.
Accoring to the reported Yahoo! Hong Kong gave Chinese authorities info. Accorinding to Yahoo! Inc, Yahoo! Hong Kong does not have access to the info. It doesn't add up.
I just love how reports don't get their facts straight. They are more interested in their name on the headline than getting us the truth.
With increasing information to the general public comes people who spin it and use that information to justify many things. Then, there is representation of information and how people look at organizations as authority figures. An example here is the Big Bang. To be scientific, as the organization is, shouldn't the big bang be described in accurate scientific terms with using terms such as model or theory? How will misrepresentation of information lead people into paths of believing things that just aren't true. Just because information is out there, doesn't mean the reporting source is honest in the way it conveys that information.
The "Theory of the Big Bang" is at the least how it should be described. NASA is a scientific organization. They should not be trying sell ideas but do strict science.
Theories, Models, and Laws are all terms that mean something. It's not just a matter of verbage but a title given to the status of something in the scientific methods. The Big Bang is actually a model according to scientific methods. To call it a theory is a stretch. To have something as a model is not a bad thing it's just a different descriptor for it.
I have also read, but I can't remember where and it's to friggin early for me to take the time to look it up, that drugs and alchol (certain amounts like a lot) can affect the brains development as an organ keeping it in the state of a younger brain.
This could be, and I think the study even said so, one of the reasons drunks and drug addicts act so immature if they have been doing it for a long time or started when they were kids.
I wonder if the study took enviormental factors such as this into account in the study.
Parties have changed a lot over time with new ones springing up and old ones dieing. An example is the democratic party. If you look at the one from the past and the one today they are not the same party. What they share is the name.
Another interesting thing of note is Lincoln was a republican and that party was the one against slavery.
The electoral system is for presidents. What about senators and house reps? Or govenors? Or mayors? And the list can continue.
One of the newest members of congress and the youngest man in congress recently said that congress is like Junior High.
What would you do if you were picked by the people to have a high paying job with a bunch of authority? (talk about ego)
Then, on top of that, now that you are picked by a bunch of people for this you have all of these lobbying parties trying to buy you off by offering you all the stuff your heart desires. How would any of us react?
I am not a good enough man to say I could fight that off.
Then, because of the system, even the most well intended person doesn't get anywhere. But, they want to keep the power, popularity and especially all the perks. So, they, like a drug addict, will do what ever it takes to keep their fix.
I don't think I would be any better.
George Washington said a 2 party system would be bad. Could he have been right? Could it not be that one party is worse than the other but this is just a product of 2 parties? Could a 3rd powerful party help remedy this situation?
OS X is not X11 based but you can install X11. X11 is included on their install DVD and with that you can run all your X11 needed apps. I already have X11 and use it with some of my current apps.
This is a very good solution for some circumstances. With software like NetObjects or Contribute you can do a lot.
But there are still some places where a CMS is still more useful than those. Say, sites that are not static but community based. In those cases a CMS is still a very good solution.
Google already is a massive power when it comes to search. They are not quite there yet but on the way to having the market share of Microsoft when it comes to search.
With Google branching out into all of the other areas of a web portal and leveraging their popularity to steal people away from others at what point will Google become too dominant?
Personally, I would rather see 3 big names (at least). A single party system can dictate too much, a 2 party system has too much fighting between the two. We need more options and less dominance.
Now that macs use an intel chipset and the backend is BSD based, can't one just use wine to run their MS apps?
Just like in freebsd/linux/unix?
When I get my MacBook that is one of the first things I will be taking for a spin.
I noticed that at least the BSD and Apache sections are missing from the nifty Sections javascript window. Yet, they are there in the Preferences section. Oversight? On purpose? Customizable?
Firefly is obviously not a huge hit. The numbers show that. He has other projects going on that have taken a higher priority. He doesn't seem to be crushed by it. If all he had to do was sit on his ass at home, he might pursue it. But, he has other, better to him, things to do.
Just because he isn't working on it anyone doesn't mean he won't work for a lower budget or that scifi is beneath him. To call him out like that is Rude, Judgemental, and Low Brow.
Lost is mass marketed. Firefly/Serenity had a nitch following. Sadly, mass market wins out these days. It may have been a good show but it just didn't catch with the masses.
It is this decades babylon 5. It just didn't last as long.
