  1. Help yourself... on IT and Divorce? · · Score: 1

I've been in IT for 20 something years now, and have one divorce to my credit. After that divorce, however, I found out that it was pretty much all my fault. A friend suggested I get some advice from www.DocLove.com and www.askmen.com/dating/doclove. I actually paid $99 for his book (when you can easily buy it used on eBay for half that price, or less) and it made a huge difference in my life.

Before reading his book, I was pretty much a man with no standards, no self respect, no self control, and was, in a word, boring. I thought the mark of a good relationship was avoiding fights, when in fact the mark is being able to effectively deal with the underlying problems that cause fights.

Now nearly 8 years later I am engaged to the most wonderful, honest, loyal, flexible, and plain *fun* woman I have ever met. I've even started giving advice to friends, who keep trying to convince me to start a business around giving guys advice.

My view is quite simply most men have the relationship skills of a 12 year old. They treat their wives/women like their mothers, and expect her to take care of them. Fact of the matter is that you have to be somewhat of a leader, a decision maker, and you have to provide your wife and family with quality time. "Quality" being the keyword there, not so much "time" as so many men would like to think. I am always amazed to hear of guys who spend 8 hours working, then 4-6 hours playing computer games or surfing the 'net when they get home, and then they wonder why their woman left them.

Likely, in my opinion, if your woman cheats or leaves, it was because of something you lacked. The *trick* is to LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES, something so few men do. :(

I do give out advice on a forum nowadays, but I'll be hard pressed to get slashdotted!

  2. Is it just me ... on Is Your Laptop At Risk While Traveling? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Or did it strike anyone else odd that the article seemed to just be a big advertisement on why you need to go buy a new laptop case? I saw very little information about the actual policies, or doing anything about them, other than "Go buy a new case."

Irony: The article below it on the Slashdot homepage refers to fake news reports.

    Coincidence?

    The catch?

They don't make them any more. Go to eBay and buy a used one.

  5. My setup on Home Network Data Storage Device · · Score: 1

My setup which works well is simply a Windows 2003 server with 2 x 250GB secondary drives, 2 x 30 GB drives for the OS, using Windows to manage them as mirrored sets.

Then, on my XP desktop, I map the "My Documents" folder to a shared drive on the server.

Then, I set the "My documents" folder to have "Offline Access".

Now if the desktop dies, the server has the files. If a drive dies, I can swap it out. If the server dies, the desktop has the files. And they are all synchronized automatically when my PC is idle.

I've lost a few HDD's over the years, but have never had to rebuild anything. Just shut down, pull the dead drive and replace it, reboot, and let the server rebuild itself. And even while the server was down, I can still work on files on my desktop.

  6. I buy GPL software all the time... on Making Money Using Open Source Software? · · Score: 1

I use vBulletin forum software for many of my sites. No, it's not free, but close to it at $160. Many developers make hacks for it and it's great software. I also install Mambo CMS for web site clients. It's free, but I bundle it with training and a years worth of support and make a profit. I would easily pay for it as well, even though it is open source. I have also purchased a variety of open-source applications for various web projects. Quite frankly, I don't mind paying so long as I get the source code because I then know I can modify it to be exactly how I want it - if desired.

I agree. Technology can be well used, but I personally have a hard time with it. I use Outlook 2003 and it catches a lot of spam, but it also mis-flags quite a bit.

Personally, I think challenge-response systems are the way to go, with exceptions made for certain servers (such as eBay, PayPal, etc.) that impersonate their users. (They should, of course, not do that.)

  15. Re:Thank our government for this! on Losing Control of Your TV · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is ALREADY happening, don't you see? If any of you have a DVD player, then you know what I am talking about.

Pop in a DVD, press play, and you are FORCED to watch the Piracy Warning, and the Company Name banners. Some previews are even hard to get past. This takes up to a few minutes for some DVD's.

    You cannot fast forward.
    You cannot rewind.
    You cannot stop.

This kind of technology being suggested just serves to stop people from having any control over their TV's. Pretty soon I can easily see TV's that will not allow you to change the channel during commercials, mute the volume during commercials, or turn off without watching the last few commercials. It's already gotten to the point where some channels have decided to pad a 2 hour show to 3 hours by adding an additional hour of commercials.

And so far, no one is complaining. So sad.

This will not stop piracy, in my opinion, it will only make it worse. The forbidden fruit, so to speak.

When I buy DVD, it should begin playing the movie the instant I put it in the machine. I paid for it, it's mine. Commercials are fine on TV stations, because that is how they make their money, but not on my PAID FOR retail DVD.

Hollywood, MPAA, and RIAA are all a bunch of greedy bastards, IMO! :)
