Motorola is an awful company to do business with unless you are a volume user. They haven't a clue that its important to seed smaller designs with good pricing to win mindshare and have innovative designs flurish.
TI understand this and look who won the DSP battle. (other reasons granted)
Moto will charge you twice the price for half the performance vs x86 and still wonder why they are not able to make inroads.
By the way Coldfire next gen. 68k has done ok but they are fumbling / killing this as we speak, ARM / Xscale will be the winner.
I think you have point, but one counter argument is that a lot of/. readers is positioned inside IT organizations at often at key positions as far as IT is concerned.
Let's take the uptake of Linux / samba servers installed surreptiously inside organizations a few years back. Don't you think this has had a huge impact on the ability to get to next step in reducing MS depencency?
Now take Xbox hacking. Why couldn't this be the testing ground for the DRM issues that we will face in 12-18 month?
One last comment. Why do you think MS is advertising on/.? Developers , developers developers....
They do not need to know what CD's only that you buy CD's and at what frequency. Now what else do you buy? You got stuff from NewEgg, most likely computer equipment and you had a couple of items delivered from TheGap.
Now I am launching a new Designer Multimedia oriented PDA. Would I want you on my direct mail list? You bet.
Do I want the person that monthly gets a package from a pharmaceuticals shop and has twice had something delivered from Wheelchairs-R-Us? Probably not.
Hopefully this will not give USPS any ideas! They could get an almost perfect profile on you if they wanted. What about FedEx? They would know who bought what kind of stuff on the Internet and would be able to put together a superbly targeted direct mailing list for almost any business. The problem with FedEx is that the "stuff" is readily available in machine readable form.
Thanks for your reply. I think it's because they keep digging / building in the area and stuff get's exposed.
I was just irritated over this "bandwidth is expensive" argument. Bandwidth is cheap and need to half in price every 18 month or so, but it isn't. The Last Mile is being held hostage.
"A cult is a religion with no political power." -- Tom Wolfe.
The difference between cult and respectable religions are just the size of membership. Example: Eating the body of Christ, handed to you by a priest! Imagine the reaction if someone came up with this POS today. Doesn't get more "Cult'ish" than that.
Just because your are not paranoid doesn't mean your are not being followed!
So what about the frequent outages we get, the real shortfall in bandwidth from "advertised" number, is this stealing as well?
Here is Dallas Attbi.com craps out every time it's windy or raining. The fools have no way of figuring out the cable leg is dead other than schedule a service call then wait for a barage of service calls to alert the local people that something is wrong.
They are stealing my time. Get another supplier? Tough they have a monopoly given them when they testified at the FCC hearing that thy would not increase rates if the requirements for having a second provider got eliminated.
Guess what happened within a year. Did these guys go to jail for perjury, Think not.
I'd be very careful about using the word "caste" if I were you; there's a lot of misinformation about what "caste" means.
Take your pick, each one makes you sick.
1 A race, a stock, a breed. obs. in gen. sense.
2 A Hindu hereditary class of socially equal persons, united in religion and usu. following similar occupations, distinguished from other castes in the hierarchy by its relative degree of purity or pollution. Any more or less exclusive social class.
3 The position conferred by membership of a caste.
4 The system of division of society into castes.
5 The form of a social insect having a particular function.
I agree with you but it surprises me that you (nor anybody else afaik) has mentioned the superior online strategy adopted by PS2 and GC.
They leave it to the individual game makers to provide the infrastructure and rules how to play. This is much better
If you get banned due to modding from Xbox Live you are hosed as far as internet gaming is concerned. Not so with the other consoles.
You can play US games on your Eur PS2 with minimal penalty risk as an example. Second you can decide to give your business to the game maker that mostly align themselves with your "View of the world" .
Did they acutally lose the case or just their request for injunctive relief?
The Latest info I can find is from last month where Lindows asked the Judge to dismiss the case filed by MS. There can not have been any ruling yet as the press would have written about it regardless of outcome.
They already did and lost so far, what more as a result the name Windows as a trademark for MS' OS might not be protected.
Lindows might be doing us all a favor.
There is a story over at theInquirer today about a major win for Cyrix / Via from Walmart.
They are having some server problems so I have included portions from the article here
Via wins big Wal-Mart Linux PC order
C3-Cyrix-Centaur selling 300,000 PCM?
By Mike Magee: Tuesday 19 November 2002, 09:58
TAIWANESE SEMI firm Via has secured an order from massive shop Wal-Mart for two of its C3-Cyrix-Centaur X86 based processors.
The Economic News reports that Via and Wal-Mart will create two budget machines running flavours of the Linux OS.
There's also a plan for the chip company to make low cost sub $300 machines running Windows Eyecandy.
The article claims that Medion is also set to clinch a deal with Via, while Legend and the Founder Group also use some of the C3 processors.
Don't forget Steve Wallach he was one of the protagonists in Tracy Kidder's Pulitzer winning book The Soul of a new Machine about the 32bit Data General next generation machine Nova that was going to leapfrog Digital's Vax. An excellent read by the way.
He still drives a Porche with Convex as number plate.
This is not such a dumb question. The LinuxBIOS project was started by and for the Los Alamos National Lab. One of the nifty things this allows them to do is change Kernel without taking the machines down. You can then switch to a kernel compiled for different purposes.
If they paid for the current software I ask them to have the people that got the money fix the problem.
This is a good lead in for putting Mozilla / OpenOffice etc on the windows box.
Did you know PS2 adapter sold out 450,000 units at launch? MS only made 150k units as they needed the good press of "SOLD OUT".
They claim to have sold 2.5Mu in US and each unit has a build in ethernet adapter so why only make 150k?
Second: MS / Sony et al is breaking international trade law by imposing Area restrictions. I hope Lik Sanfg make that a cornerstone of their defense.
TI understand this and look who won the DSP battle. (other reasons granted)

I think your insight merits a separate story on /.. Ask Slashdot might be a possibility if you have some personal anecdote to tie it into.

Read the Troll manual again Your are supposed to make it much shorter.
Me wonders if your use of slanted Italic has some deeper ulterior motive.

No, especially since they all paid for their version of "Devils Own"

There is a slight snag, it cost $49 to sign up. ;0)
Selling software and DVD's that can only work in special regions of the world is against Free Trade.
If you notice this has never been pushed by RIAA etc into the courts as they are more than likely to lose.
Xbox is being launched in Singapore as we speak and one of the strategies MS is following to counter Sony PS2 is allowing US game versions to be sold.
They already did and lost so far, what more as a result the name Windows as a trademark for MS' OS might not be protected. Lindows might be doing us all a favor.
and once that beta test machine is sold they are planning to build five real production units.;-)
You sound as this is a bad thing, (Sorry if I misread your intent) isn't this exactly how a market economy is supposed to work.
Free choice is a good thing and if they have to limit their offering at a later stage at least the "losers" had their chance.
