Having dealt with journal publishing, here is how I handle things. Modify the figure. Then all you have to do is reference it by saying "modified from Jack and Jill (1969). Of course your modification should add something to the argument.
Whatever happened to the student taking some responsibility for learning the material? The student should read the chapters as assigned. People keep bitching about how bad our education system is and how we should teach a certain way. Perhaps the students have just gotten more lazy (with reinforcement of the parents). So we don't want the students to put forth an effort to learn? I should tailor my lectures to minimize the outside work that Johnny Fratdude has to do? They make some good points in the article on Cognitive Load Theory, but we are putting less and less of the learning responsibility on the students and that, IMHO, is the problem.
I see no one has really brought up the idea of handing out beatings to these slimy purveyors. Can't you imagine: Spammer sitting in his recliner one spring evening. There is a knock on the door. He opens the door and there is a crowd of Slashdotters with baseball bats (disguised as Gandalf, stormtroopers or Neo). The spammer gets wooden shampoos and is "encouraged" to change his ways or he will receive another visit. Yes, I know the squeamish among you will wail "That is against the law....you could go to jail". To that I reply "Shut your mouth, basement boi". The problem is there is not severe enough punishment for these goons. Violence may be a bit excessive, but so far everything else hasn't worked. Who is with me?
I just finished a project with the U.S.G.S. It was on a potentially environmentally sensitive topic relating to mineral resources in areas with threatened and endangered species. At no time during the internal review process were we encouraged to change anything or alter our findings. Thankfully this report came out before this "directive" was handed down. I wish the U.S.G.S. the best of luck trying to implement this. I'm sure the guys at Menlo Park aren't very happy with this.
We carry hammers and drink alot. All kidding aside it may seem like a stupid debate, but the term pluton is an integral part of geology and yes all the term is presented in Geology 101. As the article states there is overlap between geology and planetology so there is plenty of opportunity for potential confusion. My prediction is the astronomers will lose on this one. Why? Just because it was our word first!!!:P
He is a hell of a lot more entertaining than the drivel you basement-dwelling leachers spam slashdot with everyday. I think you are just jealous. True he doesn't say too much, but neither do you. And like it or not he has a bit more credibility. Your credibility = talking with your WOW gang-bang buddies. Now mod me Flamebait and go back to your Cheetos and inflatable doll.
I'm not knocking Google. I've been using it as a search engine since the beginning. However their financial stats scare the hell out of me. A stock price of over $400 per share. A market cap of $122 BILLION (Microsoft is $281 billion; Apple $58 billion)and a P/E of more than 80. An investor should be veryyy cautious about playing with this one.
I am of the opinion that the phishers just aren't trying that hard anymore, especially when I receive four copies of the same message telling me my account is closed at a bank where I have never had an account. Or where I receive messages about my Paypal account at an e-mail address I never use Paypal with. I just don't click on links in e-mails. Period. But seriously, though, it seems now that phishers are just spamming instead of improving sophistication. It's kind of sad really. Smells a bit like desparation on their part. And no I did not RTFA. I did read the abstract.
As a Ph.D. who has been actively searching for the elusive academic job, I can say Ph.D. candidates are well aware of the job market. As a previous poster pointed out, you shouldn't be in a Ph.D. for the money. We do science because we love it. Funding wouldn't be such an issue if tenure and promotion committees wouldn't put so much weight on grants for tenure consideration. I can fund most of my work out of my own pocket and frequently do (field geologist). Why? Because I enjoy what I do.
Before the Slashdot community turns on Google with the same sputtering hatred they now reserve for Microsoft? It's great that Google seems to be implementing a strategy that maximizes the effectiveness of their workers. What sort of stunt will they pull that sends its rabid supports into the arms of the red-headed stepchild Yahoo?
No wonder they are giving it away. Autodesk does CAD very very well. It's foray into GIS with its AutoCAD Map was a half-assed attempt that resulted in a piece of crappy software that wasn't worthy of the 1's and 0's that were used to create it. Stick with what you know.
If it keeps their mouth's shut in my classes I am all for it. I don't care what you do, just shut the hell up and don't distract my teaching or the other students
The CEO can kiss my ass and the dumb ass secretary he is banging can kiss my ass too. If the clients don't like it they can take turns kissing my ass after the CEO and his whore are finished. Jesus, you zombies don't realize that essentially a coporate entity is dictating what you wear!! That is exactly the problem with corporatism. Instead of focusing on the business and getting things done more effectively, HR dildos are generating memos about violations of business casual policy. I would sooner scrub fucking toilets than go back into a coporate environment that has a stupid ass dress code. It's an attempt to strip away individualism. How much is yours worth? How much money does it take to pimp yourself out so you can feed your stupid ass kids, keep them in Tommy Hilfiger clothes, and make sure they have a steady stream of PS 2 games to numb their minds? No wonder corporations are such shit holes these days. All about style and no substance. Ok I'll shut up now so you all can tell me what a loser I am.
He was referring to the Russians, but it applies to the U.S. now. We are space pussies. We could have already established moon bases and probably already had a trip to Mars if we hadn't gone crazy with this whole shuttle/crappy assed tin-can of a space station. Where is the big freaking space station that I go vacation at? Or the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino at Tranquility Base? Space pussies.
Like many slashdotters I would like to know when is the appropriate time to turn on them, complain about their shoddy products, monopolistic practices, etc. etc. a la Microsoft and anyone else that does something that violates our dearly held , mom's-basement dwelling sense of right and wrong. When will be the tipping point? When will I come to slashdot and see articles reviling their name and casting them in Dante's 7th Level with Gates, Ballmer, SCO and the other techno-sodomites?
This is the kind of shit that happens when people hide behind e-mail instead of working out issues face to face. The tone of someones e-mail is too easily misinterpreted. And no I didn't RTFA!
You people have been snowed by the system. Ooooooo a contract...i'm so scared. A noncompete clause!?!? Oh, I guess that means I'm a coporation's bitch. Give me a freaking break. Guess what Billy-bob-boy. I work for whoever the fuck I please. I don't have to have permission from you, Ballmer, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Jesus, Buddha, Allah or any other entity to work for Google. Everyone is so quick to tremble at the slightest rumble from one of these corporations.
