Sorry, but al-Zarqawi and his animals are not "defending their country against invasion." They are opportunistic, completely intolerant Islamic fundamentalists whose sole vision is to convert or kill all non-Muslims and create a unified Islamic world under strict sharia. Yesterday, this group killed 35 Iraqi kids with car bombs who were waiting for candy from American soldiers. Too bad there's no mod "-1, Misinformed".

It has nothing to do with anybody thinking he is some sort of an authority on anything.

You may want to educate yourself a little on the US Senate Committee system before making such blanket statements. While it is true that Byrd has been on the Committee since 1958, it is expected that a Committee Leader had better have some sort of expertise, experience, and interest related to the subject of their Committee! The real issue of why he wasn't forced to resign his leadership position (or even his Senate post) after his self-destructive racist comment remains beyond explanation. Shouldn't the NAACP quickly crucify any public official who used the word "nigger"? Oh yeah -- he's a Dem, so it's OK.

BTW, the Senate Committee on Appropriations is of minor importance anyway -- they're just the ones who dole out and keep track of our tax dollars.

Becides I bet 2/3 of the congress are racist. They just know when to keep their mouths shut.

Wow, what an intelligent statement! Did you come up with that on your own? I guess you don't have any facts to back it up, being that they're all keeping quiet. I also guess that it's OK for me to hate anyone I like as long as I don't put it on record . . .

Agreed. How about our good friend Democrat Robert Byrd, former KKK recruiter ("kleagle" if you want to get technical), who was allowed to get away with using the term "white nigger" a few years back? Just figured I'd point out that Trent Lott didn't even approach that level of direct racism and was burned at the stake, while lots of folks still take what that fossil Byrd says as gospel.

While I agree with you in that the punishment absolutely does not fit the crime, I believe it's a little narrow-minded to say that it's only "Right Wing Assholes" who are resposible for the entertainment industry's current stance on file trading, even if this one particular bill was sponsored by a Texas Democrat. Most of Hollywood and the various eMpTV voice pieces are overwhelming liberal (I'd say the term "Left Wing Assholes") applies. And BTW, does the name Fritz Hollings ring any bells?

Typical Slashdot holier-than-thou karma-whoring. The issue behind this article is NOT about whether or not you're supporting the RIAA and its artists -- it's that the punishments being meted out don't fit the "crimes" (which in this case don't even have to be proven), and that big media is fucking up normal citizens' lives for no reason other than to buy time for a failing business model.

Check out HAMWeather if you haven't already. It's been around for years and it's essentially a set of scripts which allow you to set up your own AccuWeather or weather.com -type site. It's also got a lot of other additional features like mapping and "weather sticker" creation (dynamically creating a small image with a location's name, current conditions and a little icon representing the current conditions). I've been using it for about two years and while it's not rocket science, I've found it to be a very useful, time-saving tool. The scripts are available in Perl, ASP, and PHP.

There are times when to use a strongly-typed, "true" OO language like Java or C++ and times to use a scripting language like PHP or Perl. Part of being a good programmer is being smart enough to use the right tool for the right job. If you want to torment yourself by over-engineering a small- or mid-sized website in EJB, go for it, but respect those who like being able to get stuff up quickly and easily, with a minimal learning curve. And YES, it is possible to build secure web apps in PHP, despite what you may have heard.

Brilliant! These folks know that the RIAA doesn't want to actually take anyone to trial, just scare the bejeezus out of Mommy and Daddy so they don't let their kids use Kazaa. The risks are much too high for the RIAA if they should lose, and IMHO it's too much for them to prove, particularly in a college dorm-type setting, that the person they sued was actually the one doing the infringement. What about the wide-open Wi-Fi defense, or the zillion other instances where you just can't prove who was using a specific IP at any given time?

  19. Re:Wonlt Work for All Concerts... Won't Fit on Instant Live Concert Recordings · · Score: 1

The compression you're talking about is caused by the analog compression used to squash (level) the dynamic range of material -- not digital compression which is part of the analog-to-digital encoding process. It's why FM radio stations sound so loud compared to, say AM.

  21. Re:Questionable quality of feeds from the board on Instant Live Concert Recordings · · Score: 3, Interesting

Debatable. The quality of the board feed will be completely dependent on whether or not they're actually making a specific submix for the live recording and how much time they're spending on making it sound good. If they just grab the signal out of the console's headphone jack it will probably sound like shit. However, it is entirely possible for an audience member to make exceptional quality recordings -- folks have been doing it for years with portable DAT machines and high-quality mics, and some of these bootlegs easily surpass the board's quality. Personally, I see this as a gimmick requiring very little effort to pump the fans for extra dollars after having already paid the TicketBastard "Convenience Charge." I'm not about to turn over even more money for their weak-sounding "live" crap.

128 meg can also store almost 2-1/2 hours of 128kbps/44kHz mp3. Odds are, especially coming off the board, most concert goers won't be able to hear the difference.

  23. Questionable quality of feeds from the board on Instant Live Concert Recordings · · Score: 4, Interesting

Don't expect something that sounds like like "At Fillmore East" or "Live at Leeds." Feeds taken from a mixing console were intended to be routed to a PA system playing at ear-splitting volumes, not a 2 track master EQ'd for home listening. Making great-sounding live recordings in and of itself is quite an art form.

  24. Re:Trains vs cars on Virginia MagLev Project Back on Track · · Score: 5, Interesting

It's debatable . . . I'm a business traveller and here in the US I have used the "trains" of several major cities to get from the airport to, say a downtown area or to other suburbs of the metro area. MARTA in Atlanta is great. A lot of business folks there live on the north side of the Perimeter but the airport is south of the city. Trying to get to the airport during rush hour is Russian roulette down I-85, but with MARTA you WILL make it in 45 minutes . . . just pay your 1.50 and read your book.

I've had similar experiences with the "L" in Chicago going from Midway airport to downtown. No rental car to pick up, park, fuel, or pay for, and like MARTA, there's a station downtown on every corner as well as one attached directly to the airport -- very cool.

IMHO, Baltimore's light rail sucks, unfortunately. It's more like electric streetcars on rails than a real train. For some reason, it's about twice as slow as any other metro rail system I've ever been on, and a bit more confusing to use if you've got to transfer to get to the way north suburbs.

The bottom line is that as a business traveler with a tight schedule, it's usually a lot easier to use the train to get close, and then walk or cab to your final destination. BTW, the key with all of these urban trains is don't take them by yourself after dark. Most go through sketchy neighborhoods and you will be panhandled and otherwise bothered at the very least.
