That reminds me of my first exp with a linux screensaver. I was moving from windows to linux and didn't know much, and the screensaver that emulates a system crash came on while I was on the phone with my girlfriend. Oh man did I flip out. Luckly the mouse moved and it was all ok again LOL.
My favorite part is when other employees interview and are so proud of their projects that are minor at best.
Whats wrong with being proud of what you've done. If it was a challenge for you and you overcame it you should damn well be proud. You should of seen how proud I was when I compiled my first kernel successfully. I almost through a kegger. Now its the simpliest thing in the word. I got even more excited when I did my first LFS project. These are minor things any real linux geek should be able to do. But for me, at the time, I was the greatest computer geek in the world (if only for the moment).
Maybe those people dont have the skills for the job, but you shouldn't get down on them for being proud of what they have done.
With every current version of Windows, I can go to a website called "Windowsupdate.com" and click a single button to update EVERYTHING in my system. And you know what? I don't have to go looking anywhere but microsoft.com for fixes for Windows.
Must be nice. I have to go to ati's website to get all the drivers I need for my AiW card. And I have to go to a seperate spot on microsofts website to get windows media encoder 9 (required by the aiw drivers). And I have to go to creatives website to solve bugs in the sound driver that windows update installs.
I guess its my choices in vendors. But with ubuntu, I installed, then everything just worked. With the exception of 3d. I had to install those myself.
Did you track down what was causing the crash. It could of been a poor driver, or bad hardware, or a number of other things. I have a winXP box with upwards of 45 days uptime (would be more but driver updates require reboots). I'd say winXP is really nothing more then a perty gui set on top of win2k and a few minor tweaks to make some more cash. I havn't noticed it to be better or worse then win2k.
I'm giving a decision if I want to view the ads or not. In fact, I rarely block all ads with adblock. I block the ads I dont want to see again on a case by case basis, with the exception of doubleclick. I block all their servers because it is mostly crap.
I tested this at a local store. When you place an item in the bag without scanning, the weight does not add up and it says to take the item out of the bag. But if you get mad at the thing and say, "I did scan it, god I hate these stupid machines!!" The clerk will just press a button on his end that allows it so you can finish scanning (Hes too underpaid to worry about if you did scan it or not). Then finish scanning the rest of the products. So yes, you could massivly steal from the store, just pay in cash.
And before someone gets all fussy, I only did it as proof of concept. I took the item back out and re-scanned it.
Last time I hired someone I was working for a small company. I was actually hiring my replacement as I was leaving. The interview was easy. I took them, talked to them for about 20 minutes to get a good feel of them, then sat them down and gave them a project to solve in perl or php (The two languages we used on our web applications).
The ones that had working code before they left were moved on. Out of that bunch, the one's who's code was readable were selected, and then I re-interviewed those 3 guys and hired the one who sounded the most confident.
It was a long process, but I learned more about their skills by reading thier code then I ever did by reading their resume.
You forgot the cost of the games themselves. And the cost of expansions (one about every 3-5 months). And if you dont buy the expansions, you might as well quit. Which is why I did:-)
We are actually in the 2nd year, and thats exactly how I see it. I dont mind playing less games in exchange for saving tens of thousands of dallors. Its amazing to me how much money I actually spend. When we sat down and figured it out I was a little upset. The kind of money I make vs the savings I had really was unsettling.
I think a lot of people spend too much and then have a hard time by not planning for the future. When we got our house, my future wife asked me what would happen if we got fired. I realized I couldn't afford to pay my car payment, eat, pay rent, and my other bills for more then a month after severance/unemployment runs out.
Thats scary. Thats almost doom 3 scary. Especially for someone who works in the tech industry.
I've estimated that I've spent almost 800 per account playing EQ (I had 2 accounts). I used to justify it by saying "Well, when i'm playing EQ, I dont buy other games, so its cheap entertianment". But after looking at my finacial history that is not true. I buy about 2 video games a month. At 40.00 (looks like this will go up, both doom 3 and HL2 were 55.00) a game, thats 960.00 a year on video games + 800 * 2 = 2560 a year (not including tax) on games. Thats a down payment on a car, or a new guitar. Hell, the intrest that would of saved me on my morgage alone.
I've made a pact with my soon to be wife. After the first of the year, I will only have a budget for gaming of 1 video game a month, with no option to save up (I.E. If I dont buy a game this month, I dont get 2 next month.) I'm actually hoping to get this down to 1 videogame every 2 months, but thats wishful thinking (although possible if I can get into more betas). I'll put this money back into more tangable things like my savings and my portfolio. Our at least buy toys with more long term investment (guitars and such). I have even looked at going outside for a change (gasp!).
Now if I could only stop playing video games so often, I could pick up more side work, maybe bring in more then 1-2 k extra a month.
See Piracy in the new media world means "not buying our product". It doesnt mean, stealing the product, or downloading it, or even watching it. Just not buying it.
So, if he would of released both at the same time, you wouldn't buy both, thus commiting a crime. Mr. Lucas is just protecting you from yourself.
Well, you never know for sure, intel could come in and clean up. But will it be stable by then, and will it be price compatable. I do constant research, and i'm constantly updating my design for my new pc. I keep a "dream" pc saved over at newegg, and I just update it as my research shows X new part is stable, fast, and a reasonable price compared to similar options.
That said, even with all my research, I've still made bad choices. When I built my i875p I went with a giga-byte board because everything I read said it was the best board on the market for i875p. Well 3 RMA's later I abandoned it and went with an intel board. My machine has been rock solid ever after (I later found on the giga-byte board was just really really picky on ram, it didnt' matter on the timings even though I played with those forver).
After that experiance, I have decided to use proven hardware over extreame hardware. If intel can get their new 64bit cpu's to market well before july (before feb or march) That will be enough time for the market to beta test their product and make most of the issues known.
Each one is a learning exp. I learn what to do and what not to do. For example, I didn't take the claims of p4's heat and speed issues seriously. When I built my girlfriends pc recently (amd xp 3200) with similar hardware (although video card is a 5900) It runs slightly faster in benchmarks in some area's, and runs a decent amount cooler. Video performance isn't as good with the 5900, but she's not a big gamer.
But like anything, you never know until you try it. You can read about all the hardware all you want, but until you build a box, you have no idea who well it is going to perform.
Concider this.
I need a computer to do my job. It is a buisness expense. I write it off on my taxes. I build a new computer every july. I always build it on 3-4 month old technology (last july, i875p board p4 3.2ghz and 9800 pro) This july will be an amd64. I have never upgraded a pci, in fact when I sell my old pc's off they usually got another 1-2 years of video gamming without upgrades in them. Plus my return on investment is great. I spend about 1100 on a good pc. I usually get about 800-900 for the pc when I sell it. That makes the cost of my pc about 200.00.
So, can I buy an play station 2, do my job on it (software development), browse the internet, play video games, use a keyboard and mouse, watch dvd's, burn dvd's and cdr's, Learn new operating systems with multiple partitions/hard drives, and keep myself on the edge of technology so my skills will be desireable for under 200.00? Oh yea, its got to be a tax write off too.
** Disclaimer, I own a ps2, psx, gameboy advanced, xbox, and gamecube. I bought the ps2 and xbox when I needed dvd players for my tv (hey why not), got the gamecube for christmas from my girlfriend, had the psx for years, and bought the gameboy for flights. I still play most of my games on the pc.
I am currently going to sue HP because I just realized the scanner I bought can be used to make perfect copys of my copywrited artwork. Plus, I'm also going to use sony because their dvd burners can make perfect copys of my copywrighted home movies. Who's with me? Millions of SCO lawyers are about to lose their job and are ready to work with us.

Dont just boycott, pirate the games! Remember every time you pirate a game you cost their company millions in lost cash.
Check out transgamings new game database. With the release of 4.2 a lot of new directX 9c games are supported.

I forced my car dealer to take that sticker off before I would sign off on the car after the inspection. They fought me, but nothing they could do.
You dont have to install firefox, go to their ftp server and grab a zip file. I have yet to install firefox.
Can you access about:config and change the version. Thats how you install old .9 extentions on firefox 1.0
expansions.

Alienware, actually alienware gives alienware a great alienware deal as long as alienware they said alienware a alienware lot.

I'd mod you up if I had mod points.
i have a p3 3.2 and 1 gig of ram. Runs without any noticable slowness.

its safe to assume everyone with a good pc has a internet connection, but its not safe to assume anyeone with a $200+ video card has a dvd player?
Nah, I dont bother checking my spelling. I let you guys do it for me ;-)
