I do have a powerbook, for laptops, they are the same in price, and worth it. I use it for travel and trips. But I dont really see the other advantages over linux, and the cost of their desktops is almost double the cost of my high end x86 pc.
Being that I use linux, almost every program I need can be found for free. Yes, mac does have some nice software, but I'm willing to deal with issues that may come up to safe money with open source software. I also like building my pc's, so I dont concider that a downside. I do own a powerbook though, I bought it on ebay. It is one of the best purchases I've made in a while. I can justify it on a laptop, but not for a desktop machine. 3000 is just too much money for so little gain.
That doesn't make it more superior then linux, and the cost of PC hardware is cheaper then mac.
I really like mac's. I like their UI, and the feel of them. But I can build a much more powerful pc for my price range (usually 900-1200 USD) Mac's prices are just too high even if they supported games.
The situation is still the same though. You took my money, now give me what you promised.
But they never said it would last, so I guess its ok. I say expect something to only last as long as its covered by warranty. That way you wouldn't of payed 300.00 for a game system that only lasts a year. Then maybe the dying sales will force their hand to improve their product.
Yea, I feel so guilty sending that check to the cable company every month while I'm downloading those episodes of the daily show I missed. I'm such a horrible person:-p
I'm just glad I have mythTV. Sure I might have a problem if I have to switch to digital cable, but I dont have to worry about people deleting my videos before i'm done with them.
If they did that, and then had to change how extentions work for security reasons. Those users would blame firefox for their extentions not working.
By forcing validation of extentions they are making sure the extentions will work in this version. But if you are smart enough to know how to enable the work around, then you can take the risk.
I think this is a good method actually.

Its funny. I went home at lunch and started memtest86 off the knoppix cd. I'll find out when I get home.
I really have to thank you guys for the suggestions. I have a good feeling i'm gonna find the problem and get this resolved by the end of the night tonight.

Anything under a year old I would concider new. The chipset is almost if not over 2 years old. I've been using sata drives for a long time now.
I'd call new a system something like a LGA775 Pentium 4 or amd64 system.
In any case, this system is old enough to be in the lower half of pricing on most websites. I'd concider it a standard midrange pc if bought today. I'd call low end around a amdXP 2000 or intel equivlent. This is for desktop PC's of course. A small home file/mail/web server or router/firewall would not need to be so large at all.
A lot of people have replyed to me and the general consensus seems to think my dvd rom is to blame. I'll throw in a new one when I get home and post my results.

Thanks for the information. Knoppix does boot up and works like a charm (well except sound, but that should be simple to resolve). I will give this a try tonight and see if it works for me.

My machine at home can run redhat, mandrake, suse, and even gentoo, but I can't for the life of me get any debian based distro to work on my PC.
During the base install I will get random package errors. I thought it might be my CD, but i've burned 10 at this point and verified the CRC, so maybe its my sony DVD burner that i'm using to read the disk for the install.
Here's my specs if anyone has a clue
p4 3ghz intel i865perl motherboard audigy 2 ZS Samsung SATA 160 gig drive. Gainward nvidia FX5900XT Sony DVD burner
Nothing new or special. Tried doing a netinstall of sarge with the rc2 installer. Tried to ubantu (or however you spell it) and i'm going to try a knoppix chroot install tonight. I've tried other's but no luck on those as well.
With that, unfortunately, I can agree. Do you think an uninformed voter is better than a non-voter?
I wish I could answer that, I really am torn to decide. On one hand, I could say yes, but if no one voted, then the system would fail (might not be a bad thing, but I would suspect it to be a very bad thing). But with a lot of idiots voting, they too help break down the system, by bringing idiots to power who destroy our rights and take more of our money.
THE ENTIRE COUNTRY I LIVE IN IS A BUNCH OF RETARDED MONKEYS WHO HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON.
I know plenty of people how fit the description I gave you in my original post. I also know NO ONE who is voting for kerry (Mainly because I live in Indiana). I will be voting for a 3rd party (Cthulhu write in). I dont like bush, or kerry, or any of the other crazys. My point is people dont listen or look at what is happening, they make uniformed decisions based on what their church, school, teachers, news, mother tells them.
Why not a lot of people I know tell me they are voting for bush because he is a good christian. They said bush would take the side of the church and bring more religion into goverment and that was a good thing.
Funny thing is, they dont know anything else. They think presidents make laws, and have blinders on in regards to any other issue. There are too many people who can't look at things with an objective point of view. Its "Bush is a good christain, so he must be right", or "I can't turn my back on the commander in chief who is protecting this country", etc. People need to stop turing a blind eye. I dont care who you vote for, but I wish people can give me a better reason then "He's a christain". I'd like to see, "I agree with his stances on X and he signed law Y, and refused to give into presure from the WTO...etc"
I'm not too worried about it, I still run hardware thats almost 10 years old. I bet I'll have this computer at least long enough to hack out whatever DRM any company comes up with in the future, or switch to a open platform. When I rip songs from CD's I rip to FLAC on my network server though. I just find it easier to buy a song from itunes then to download tons of crap from kazaa or some other network thats ripped poorly, or incomplete.
That said, anyone know of a windows driver that emulates a CD burner and so that itunes will see it as a real cd burner and burn ISO's directly to the hard drive?
They popup ad's when you login to buy their expansions, mags, books, action figures, and then they switch the buy and cancel buttons around. If you arn't paying attention, and click accept its yours. No conformation button or anything. Then you have to spend time on the with sony trying to get them to cancel the order where they play ads in the hold music.
Reason 1457 why I stopped playing Massive online games.
I did that too, but then I had to stop listening to the radio and watching TV. Every place to eat or buy food in this town runs ads on tv or radio. How else will you know they are there? Are you activly calling people and asking them for new idea's you may not of thought existed but might actually like?
I simply use firefox's adblock to block ads I dont agree with. I know i'm never gonna click a MS ad, I dont need to know about how their TCO is less then linux, I dont care. So I simple block that ad. I wont block every ad on a site though unless they are horribly intrusive (which./'s ad's are not)
Its a last mile solution, so I dont see how it will make it avalible everywhere. Plus, why would a power company set this up in the country? Most houses out in my area have their own transformers they are so far from other people.
I've never really used /opt for anything myself. Would it be harmful to just link /opt to /usr or /usr/local?

I use DVD's to archive my music. I buy tunes from Itunes and strip the DRM then when I get 4 gig, I burn to DVD.
so far I've only got 3/4 a dvd.
