  1. Re:About time. on Senate Hearing On Laptop Seizures At US Border · · Score: 1

I just read through that quite disturbing article, and thought that it is worth mentioning that this happened in 1997. I don't know if things have gotten better or worse, but I'm sure that someone will read your comment, and blame it on the current administration. That wouldn't be correct.

Do you happen to know if there has been an outcome for the case you mentioned? I see that it happened in '97, the testimony was given in '99, and I can't find any record of a verdict.

Perhaps he just took the same statistics class as the author of the article. Take a very focused area that you clearly look good in, and focus on those. What the GP may be saying is that he earns £500 a day, and that day happens to be every other Friday, AKA Payday. I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt.

I think that the high price may have something to do with the insane processor that's in there. 1200 Ghz? That's a factor of 500 more than processors in brand new laptops!

I suppose there's also the chance that it's actually a 1200 Mhz processor, and that the seller has no clue, and wouldn't know the proper value of the laptop. But what are the chances of that?

A friend of mine had the idea of an 5 level indicator in the taillights. They would be for: accelerating, cruising (constant speed), coasting (slowing without brakes), brakes applied, and stopped. Another idea that I had is just to have a digital readout of the speed in the taillights, but I doubt people would like that information broadcast out. It's an argument for another time, but I think that numerical speed limits should be abolished, with harsher crackdown on dangerous driving. It's far too idealistic to work, but it seems to be a good theory.

Good luck with your case buddy, you might even be technically right. One good reason that he shouldn't be able to sue Best Buy is that Circuit City is the company in question. In seriousness, it will be interesting to see what comes of this. This is quite a legal gray area.

  9. Re:hypercapitalism? on Techie Pay Approaches All-time High · · Score: 1

As far as income taxes go, that is correct. The reasoning behind saying that the poor pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes is that there are more taxes than just income. A major one is sales tax. Those with less income are more likely to spend a higher percentage of their paycheck, which increases the sales tax they pay. Money put in banks doesn't require the payment of sales tax, so the more you put in the bank, the less you spend in sales tax, as a percentage of income.

I remember reading an article back in the Genesis days about a vest that you could plug into the system that would translate sound into force feedback. It turned out some 4 year old had turned the volume up too loud and ended up getting killed and it was pulled form the market immediately afterwards. I can't remember the name and my googlefu appears to be too weak to find the story, but that was the first thing the article made me think of. I can't find anything on a death, but might you be talking about the Aura Interactor Vest? It appears to be exactly what you're talking about.

Might I ask which math books you purchased, so I can be sure not to purchase them? Most math books I've used say that $87-$50=$37, not $27.

You do bring up a good point, though. Taking advantage of those deals is generally a good thing. The only thing to warn against on this one is that getting another credit card may affect your credit rating, either positively or negatively. I think if you cancel it too soon, it will be negatively affected, but keeping it paid off for a year or two before canceling it has a positive effect. Just be aware of the implications of applying for a credit card.

Most of the other CDs I buy are from the artists at their concerts. I hear about music mainly through word-of-mouth, but occasionally listen to a local public radio station (The Current). That relation is mentioned in the fine article as the headline, so it's not the fault of the Slashdot editors. It does seem that it's more of an encryption method than anything after reading the content of the article.

On that note, I think that encryption of a transmission of matter in data form is extremely important. Can you imagine what an intercepted transmission of that nature would do? It would bring an entirely new meaning to identity theft. What about in a war situation, if the leader of the enemy was intercepted, and there was an extra copy of him, with memories intact, that was captured? It would change much more than you'd see on the face of it.

All in all, I think that it's not directly related to a transporter, but it could be used if one were invented. It really is not the best title.
