I completely disagree - the second amendment is meant to protect us from our own military being used against us, not to protect us from other governments (at least that was Jefferson's intent). Since, as you stated, the National Guard is part of the U.S. military, the second amendment is there to protect us from your commander in chief (or his subordinates) from using you (as a tool) to do things that s/he shouldn't.

So why would it be safer up there?

I agree with everything you said accept the sentance about the second amendment being for our protection from the police. Actually the second amendment is there to protect us from an unjust government (which the police force is part of, but they have nowhere near the firepower or authority of the full military). This is why it is so dangerous that this right is slowly being chipped away - unfortunatly I think it is going to be too late before people realize this.

Also, try doing a Google search on 'Bath Bombing' and you'll find many pages on this subject - not something I would expect if nobody knew about it.

Top grade green bud sells for anywhere between $300 and $350 an ounce in CA (you can sometimes find it for less but it's usually mass produced Mexican that just 'looks' green). The DVD blanks that the normal public can purchase have an area that has been pre-written with zeros. I believe this is the area where the DVD keys are stored. If you don't have the keys you can't decrypt the data on the CD when played. If you could get a blank that was not pre-written with zeros then, yes, you can make an exact duplicate of the disk - using DeCSS or very expensive direct disk-to-disk copy hardware.

I would suggest any of the RAD tools (Delphi, C++ Builder or VB [if you have to]). These tools will allow them to create basic programs with a minimum of code to start and they can then add more advanced stuff (real code) as they learn the tools. I haven't purchased Delphi 5 yet, but I do know that the C++ Builder 5 (Pro) even comes with extra 3rd party libraries and tools they can use to start playing with making their own games.

  19. Getting other media involved on House To Hold Hearing On Napster · · Score: 1

How come the only place that I see anything about these issues is online? We are never going to win this war unless we get others involved. Sure, we can contact our representitives (in the US) but why should they care when less than 33% of the population is online and probably less than 5% of those speak up. Unless Joe Public knows about these issues and what could happen as a result of passage of these laws we (and society as a whole) are going to lose.

So when you fire your email (or letter) to your representitive, send a copy to all your local newspaper editors. And anybody that might have contacts with other news groups (TV in particular), try and get them involved. Above all, do all in your power to attend any public hearings on these issues - if you get a large enough crowd together the media will follow (it's the nature of the beast).

I agree GNU C/C++ has been used to create alot of software but for the *nix application package I've been working on for the last 15 years it's only been the last couple years that GNU has been robust enough to even compile our apps. Even today we highly recommend that our customers purchase their HW providers compiler to save themselves alot of headaches and problems. And before you go off saying it's the way we've written our code, you should know that there has yet to be a *nix platform that our applications do not run on - including Linux (which seems to have a better implementation of gcc than most commercial *nix's).

As for your bit about the cameras - the 'professionals' use the Nikons and Hasselblads because the results are MANY times better than than what you get from a point-and-shoot camera and because the options give them greater flexibily to express what they are really after. I highly doubt that an application created, using the tools you mentioned, will produce results that much greater in quality than the ones created by Borland (or any other tool provider - in fact the opposite might be true), and I have yet to find anything that can't be done, using Borlands tools, that can be done using other tools.

One last note: Keep your EMACS - give me VI any day =)

  25. Re:Borland is back! on Prepare for Kylix: The Compiler and RTL · · Score: 1

I'm not sure how taht happened, but in a few months Borland lost all its momentum. And Microsoft got it right. And that was not only because of MS tactics, but MS got it right in several senses:

One of the biggest reasons Borland (and also the other compiler developers) got dusted by M$ is the fact that at that time M$ did not give anybody else direct access to the MFC and if they did it was usually at least 1 rev back from what M$ was currently using. That gave developers no choice but to use M$ products if they wanted all the latest and greatest features in Winblows. Borland was very instrumental in getting M$ to open up the MFC to other development tool providers.
