Hibernation is still not "instant-on" by a long shot. My P4 laptop still takes almost 3/4 as much time to resume from hibernation as it does to boot.

Actually, the _only_ people whom will notice the change are the low-level programmers, no one else. And today only viruses are done in low-level, nothing else. Sure I know what you are saying, we'll infect the new Window .EXE files! :-)

Microsoft already thought about that, and took steps to stop us, all Window .EXEs have a CRC checksum, any modification will be easily noticed! Also secondly, how are we going to infect this new radical .EXE format? We cannot append anything on the back! Huh? Yes, its true, you cannot append the .EXEs file like viruses have been doing in the DOS format! And overwriting will not allow the file to execute again, and trigger the CRC checksum.

The reason we cannot append ourselves to Window .EXEs are because at the end of every .EXEs we have resources, which have to be located there! What are resources? Its them funny BITMAPs, Dialogue Boxes, Buttons, and Icons, Windows has become famous for! These resources are never loaded with the execution of the file, but loaded when needed by windows!

"twice as good"? "good" is 100% subjective in this situation.

Brakes can likely save your life, if your brakes fail you may harm/kill yourself and/or others. If windows crashes, or you can't figure out how to run something you've just downloaded it's really not a big deal.

so in short: your analogy is shit.

Why not? All they're trying to do is share something that they think is useful and good. It's entirely different from trying to convert someone religiously--it's not like we're saying "If you don't use this software instead, you're going to HELL!!!". It's just saying "Hey, in case you're interested, there is software that's free, useful, and developed cooperatively for the fun of it, instead of by companies." There's nothing wrong with it.

I know it can be awkward sometimes, and I'm not really comfortable just shoving it into people's faces, but there's nothing wrong with offering it.

If this guy is getting 25% of the people he deals with like he says then I have a hard time beliving that there isn't some heavy pressure here. These aren't the average /. users.

Don't forget slight differences in muzzle velocities from one bullet to the next. Not too big of a problem if your working within human+scope line of sight, but it becomes significant if you're trying to lob a couple ounce slug over obstacles toward your target. It would be best to use a small spread if you want to be sure of hitting your target or find another method if you can't have collateral damage. So that explains why some Marine snipers can repeatedly hit a 12" target 1000 yards away? Do they somehow anticipate the velocity difference between the bullets?
