Hibernation is still not "instant-on" by a long shot. My P4 laptop still takes almost 3/4 as much time to resume from hibernation as it does to boot.
Mine takes about the same amount of time to boot to the welcome screen as it does to come back from hibernation, but after hibernation i log in instantly, while it takes me about 45 seconds to fully load my desktop (dual-core 2.8ghz 2GB ram, windows xp sp2)
Actually, the _only_ people whom will notice the change are the low-level
programmers, no one else. And today only viruses are done in low-level,
nothing else. Sure I know what you are saying, we'll infect the new Window.EXE files!:-)
Microsoft already thought about that, and took steps to stop us, all Window.EXEs have a CRC checksum, any modification will be easily noticed! Also
secondly, how are we going to infect this new radical.EXE format? We cannot
append anything on the back! Huh? Yes, its true, you cannot append the.EXEs
file like viruses have been doing in the DOS format! And overwriting will not
allow the file to execute again, and trigger the CRC checksum.
The reason we cannot append ourselves to Window.EXEs are because at the end
of every.EXEs we have resources, which have to be located there! What are
resources? Its them funny BITMAPs, Dialogue Boxes, Buttons, and Icons,
Windows has become famous for! These resources are never loaded with the
execution of the file, but loaded when needed by windows!
"Are you sure you want those brakes? They're junk. Here's why. Here are brakes that are twice as good for half the price. You're welcome."
"twice as good"?
"good" is 100% subjective in this situation.
Brakes can likely save your life, if your brakes fail you may harm/kill yourself and/or others. If windows crashes, or you can't figure out how to run something you've just downloaded it's really not a big deal.
Why not? All they're trying to do is share something that they think is useful and good. It's entirely different from trying to convert someone religiously--it's not like we're saying "If you don't use this software instead, you're going to HELL!!!". It's just saying "Hey, in case you're interested, there is software that's free, useful, and developed cooperatively for the fun of it, instead of by companies." There's nothing wrong with it.
I know it can be awkward sometimes, and I'm not really comfortable just shoving it into people's faces, but there's nothing wrong with offering it.
If this guy is getting 25% of the people he deals with like he says then I have a hard time beliving that there isn't some heavy pressure here. These aren't the average/. users. These are people who are calling someone else to fix their computer because they can't.
4 years ago I installed Windows 2000 onto my mom's computer, I installed virus protection and ad-aware. She's not had any major problems. Every few months I use windowsupdate and check if everything's going well.
Don't forget slight differences in muzzle velocities from one bullet to the next. Not too big of a problem if your working within human+scope line of sight, but it becomes significant if you're trying to lob a couple ounce slug over obstacles toward your target. It would be best to use a small spread if you want to be sure of hitting your target or find another method if you can't have collateral damage.
So that explains why some Marine snipers can repeatedly hit a 12" target 1000 yards away? Do they somehow anticipate the velocity difference between the bullets?
how many miles are there in 1000 yards?
which is larger: the space between ones eyes, or a 12" disc
Good choice in staying anonymous, I wouldn't want anyone to know I said something that stupid either.
Certainly, one case of misspelling is not a really big thing. Everybody misspells once in awhile. That's not what this is all about, for me anyway. What it's all about is people who don't get things right that others do, and that is what bothers me. There is no way in hell I want to inherit code written by someone who doesn't care about details. I don't want eye surgery from someone who is sloppy. And I don't like to knowing that millions of TV-watching voters are too lazy to check the details, so they vote in smiling lying frauds who bankrupt us while not being able to keep us safe. It's what the misspelling represents, the cultural attitude, not the one piddly mispelling. [unmount soapbox; remount normal drive]. There.
Who cares? Anything, ANYTHING that torments and confounds microcomputer users (especially Windows users) is 100% welcome in my book. Anyone, ANYONE who writes these programs to me is an out and out hero. Mainframers are laughing at you, micro-lusers.
Micricomputer users? Who the fuck uses the phrase "microcomputer"????
And why would anyone use a mainframe for looking at web pages anyway?
I'm sure you always vote for the right person and therefore when you're old everything will be good.
This sort of news isn't time sensitive. why don't you just stop using /. if you don't find it sufficient?
I resold one for $500 with a game only 10 hours after I got it.
Microsoft already thought about that, and took steps to stop us, all Window
The reason we cannot append ourselves to Window
no, no, no, no. A judge saying that RIAA can't have the defendants hard drive does not mean that RIAA's crap is coming to a crashing halt.
"twice as good"? "good" is 100% subjective in this situation.

so in short: your analogy is shit.
If this guy is getting 25% of the people he deals with like he says then I have a hard time beliving that there isn't some heavy pressure here. These aren't the average
These are people who are calling someone else to fix their computer because they can't.
If you're not trying to convert isn't that enough?
A great way to just show someone what an Opensource OS is like is to burn them a LiveCD
I really don't like the idea of trying to convert people.
if there's one thing we all know though, it's that the internet isn't a dumptruck.
What sort of mainframes and in what way?
4 years ago I installed Windows 2000 onto my mom's computer, I installed virus protection and ad-aware. She's not had any major problems. Every few months I use windowsupdate and check if everything's going well.
What about my personal internets? Who's looking out for it?
The only thing that uses more memory than firefox for me is trillian. But maybe I'm using an old version.
Absolutely no sense? you looked at it and saw only letters? Are you sure?
you need a priority check
there's the issue of wind, along with the fact that when you're dealing with inches, between the eyes is a very narrow target
someone misspelled a word; big fucking deal.
