The spam wasn't happening because of a hole in messenger. That's exactly how the thing is supposed to work, it's just mostly useless outside of a network.
I agree with you about the swearing but I don't think this is a good what to do it.
I was frankly astonished to find out that MS didn't include a "Mute this player" function ala Counter Strike and the other Half Life games. I mean really, would it have been that hard?
I don't buy it, this is just too dangerous. Redhat may have done a very good job to date but it still could happen. Of course being a Windows admin as well I have a knee jerk fear of updates and patches so that could be spilling over to the Linux part of my brain.
This is scary though. What if you get a broken package from up2date? Or if that package bvreaks something else?

I don't really like this idea.
I didn't update the version of OpenSSH on a few of my boxes when the last advisory came out. I wasn't using a vulerable configuration (CHAP disabled) so I didn't really see it as an immediate danger.
Stuff like auto updates also has issues for the same reason. I can't think of an easy replacement for a resposible admin.
Well I too have seen it with every manufacturer including Maxtor.
Maxtor 1.2 GB to 2.0 GB models were horrible, I was a tech in a retail store at the time and we sold a bunch of NEC desktops with Maxtor drives. Got a lot of them back with dead drives.
I've seen bad drives or batches of drives from every manufacturer, there is no best brand IME.
Not likely, they want to more than double the damn tarrif next year too.
Now keep in mind that they do have to grant you certain rights in order to get this tarrif. You can legaly copy a cd for your personal use. "Personal" being the sticky part of course, you can't give it to anyone. You can borrow a CD from a friend and make your own copy without breaking a single law though.
Of course if they are interfering with my ability to do this, that should invalidate the tarrif. I'm sure it won't but hey I'm not surprised.
I actaully sat down and counted and came up with a rough estimate for the last year or so.
I figure my personal CDRs used for music as vs to CDRs purchased is about 8%. Add to that the number of CDRs I use at owrk and it might be 2% maybe less.
This is not a matter of Sony getting angry with other companies, Sony needs to get mad with itself.
Thnk about it; Playstations, notebooks, desktops, CDROM drives, Mini Disc PC-Link kits, DVD players (maybe). There is all sorts of Sony built stuff that won't play these CDs. It wasn't long ago that Sony Music released a copy protected CD, Celine Dion I think.
Now am I pissed about EMI's attitude? Yes, but hey I'm not an EMI customer (I think). Will I be pissed when I buy a Sony Music CD that I can't use in my Sony console, notebook, CDROM or copy to my Mini Disc? You better belive it.
So in short, no Sony isn't going to say anything to these guys about this because they do it themselves. Microsoft is also in negotiations with all the companies over the "DRM OS (tm)" so they aren't going to do it either.
Uhh, we're talking about extending an LDAP (MS AD) schema and maybe setting up Samba here. Not exactly friggin rocket science. I would suggest you read up some on LDAP and SMB, once you understand the basics of this stuff all will become clear to you. I would hardly call what is going on here a nightmare.
Keep in mind that nothing you are doing here would be at all new to someone who has used LDAP, or MS AD, in a Linux + Windows or Sun + Windows environment. Keep in mind that your shiny Mac is a Unix based machine and eperience and tools from other platforms will apply. Get off your ass and spend 5 minutes with google.
Is is possible you are just stupid? I read the site you linked to, most of these people are definately stupid. You have a MCSE right?
A friend of mine graduated from the Royal Millitary College last year. Last time I spoke to him on hte phone I asked what he was going to be doing now.
Co-books (hey sounds good to me) are almost always bad. The only ones I ever really enjoyed were the Niven & Pournelle stuff, they maanged to keep things together. I couldn't every really figure out who wrote what. Even the Niven, Pournelle and Barnes book (can't remember the name) was well done.
I read a short story about Duncan Idaho in Playboy by Jr. before house Atreides came out. That was enough for me, this stuff is pap. It's worse than Tom Clancy novels. **shudder**
Juding by the number of hardcover copies of both of Jr's books on the discount table at my local book mega store I would at least wait until paperback.
I'm all for banning cheaters but when it comes down to something like banning a cd key I get nervous. If for some reason you get a false positive how do you deal with it? It is end to end, a hairy bitch.
I got banned by punkbuster playing CS once, it didn't like the fact that I had the gamma turned up to make the screen a bit brighter. While I admit that this could be considered cheating on a dark map I was sitting in my den with the large window facing the sun. Without the gamma turned up I couldn't see.
I'd rather live here then in a country that basically forces people to have abortions.
Well nobody is going to say that this is a pleasant situation but I really don't think that watching everyone starve because population growth is totaly out of control is a better one.
It is what they are not saying about this that bothers me.
By establishing a ban on linking to the information they are basically telling people they think we are too stupid to read it. IMO, an intelligent person reading FARC's website and looking for info elsewhere would not come away with a good opinion of them.
By saying that people can't read this stuff they are saying that thier electorate is a bunch of fools. They are probably right, I can understand that, but it still pisses me off.
Anti-scientific is an interesting term to use. I saw the same thing but it actually attracted me to his ideas.
Seems to me like for every good scientist out ther there are 6 idiots / media whores. I think that a good scientist who is presented with a body of information that conflicts with thier own would suggest more reseasrch or prehaps that they should work together with the other to form a better theory.
That isn't what is going on here, Atkins is being dismissed as a fool out of hand. He comes off as being a little bitter about it, I don't blame him.
I used to work for an HP service center as well, this sounds strangley familiar and that was ~6 years ago.
Once upon a time I called with a BIOS problem in one of thier workstations, I don't recall what exactly. I got bounced around from tech to tech until one guy finally said to me, "I know somebody that can fix that, I'll transfer you to him." Phone rings, guy picks up....
I was not suggesting that as a solution. If the CD will work in another machine it will give you a pretty good place to start on the the problem though.
The spam wasn't happening because of a hole in messenger. That's exactly how the thing is supposed to work, it's just mostly useless outside of a network.
So lie about it. I have "discount" cards from all over the place.
None of the information I provided to any of these companies even resembles reality.
I agree with you about the swearing but I don't think this is a good what to do it.

Me too, had to sit my Mom down and explain spam and vectors for spam to her.
Only took 4 hours.

Sounds like you've been pretty lucky.
Now keep in mind that they do have to grant you certain rights in order to get this tarrif. You can legaly copy a cd for your personal use. We are screwed.
Moore's law has nothing to do with speed, it is about transistor density.

A friend of mine graduated from the Royal Millitary College last year. Last time I spoke to him on hte phone I asked what he was going to be doing now.
He said, "Sea Kings".
I said, "You're Brave."
he said, "Everybody says that."
Just thought that was kind of funny.

Great day to post this. Only three Windows 2000 Security bullitens posted today!

Do I deserve a banned cd-key for that?
Overclock the CPU and setup a raid 0 so you basically halve the mtbf on the logical volume?
What's the warranty, 12 minutes?

It's an autobody shop.
Stupid HP.
Tanks for the link man. I knew about this problem and actually used to be an HP VAR service guy.
I didn't know they were giving the replacement kits away though. Much apreciated.
